There's a concept called "reactive ethnicity" or "reactive identity".
The gist is that threatened groups are aware of their vulnerable status and potential disappearance, so they become more proactive in recognizing/promoting their identity.

This is Levittown, PA which was founded as one of the original planned suburban communities and had a "whites only" policy.
Today there still aren't many blacks there (~4%) and the crime rate is very low. Influx of Hispanic immigrants has brought the white population down tho.
