Iowans Choose Public Schools
#WeChoosePublicSchools
I am so proud of the
@iowahousedems
family. Tonight we stood tall for all Iowa kids. And tomorrow? We’ll do the same. We will never turn our backs on Iowa kids.
Still processing the lifting of COVID safety measures for no good reason. But the idea that “if you don’t feel safe stay home” is particularly offensive. Not staying home isn’t a choice for many Iowa workers, caregivers, and school kids/staff.
Everyone deserves the right to decide when to start a family. Today's ruling is a step backwards for Iowa. Like a large majority of Iowans, I believe in reproductive freedom. I will continue to fight like hell to ensure every family has access to safe, legal abortion.
It’s time for Iowa to have a governor who puts the needs of all Iowans first. We need a fresh start. We need a new Governor.
Let’s do this,
@DeidreDeJear
.
Thank you
@KonfrstForHouse
.
“For those of you who are watching, despite what you’ll see in a few moments, you are seen, you are loved, you are valued and you belong just as you are.”
Can confirm. School vouchers starve public schools - the schools that serve every kid, in every part of the state - to boost private schools that pick and choose students in fewer than 1/2 of Iowa’s counties.
Iowans see through this scheme. And they’ll remember next November.
My daughter’s first caucus was tagging along with me when we first caucused for
@BarackObama
in 2008. This year she’ll vote for the first time for someone on this list: her mom. Thank you, Mr. President.
Today I’m proud to endorse such a wide and impressive array of Democratic candidates – leaders as diverse, patriotic, and big-hearted as the America they’re running to represent:
I heard from a small business owner this morning. With restrictions lifted, she lost customers today because she continues to follow science & enforce common sense guidelines. Leadership matters. So does a lack of leadership. Some small business plan this is.
Iowa is one of two states with negative income growth.
Kids in mental health crisis have to go to other states to get care.
We have the second-highest cancer rate in the nation.
But, do go on about spending time and money to fight rules designed to protect kids.
New from
@n_hytrek
: At the urging of Gov. Kim Reynolds, Iowa has joined a suit against the US Department of Education because of new federal rules to protect LGBTQ+ students from discrimination.
You are paying for rich families’ kids to go to private school while your neighborhood school has fewer resources.
In 144 districts, property taxes will go up to pay the difference.
The voucher scheme is a win for special interests while the rest of us foot the bill.
Nearly $180 million in tax dollars has been set aside for vouchers during the 2024-2025 school year. That’s $50 million more than was initially projected.
Iowans want us to focus on the real issues facing our teachers and students today. Taking more money away from public schools hurts Iowa's kids. Iowa Democrats will always put our kids in public schools first. It’s people over politics.
#ialegis
Iowans are exhausted with politics today & Kim Reynolds’ new tv ad is exactly why. Instead of being honest with Iowans about her wildly unpopular plans to ban all abortion & use vouchers to strip away money from public schools, 1/2
“She does what the national Republicans want her to do, whether or not it's in the best interest of Iowans. …that's who she's answering to, and that's who she leads for.”

All Iowa kids deserve a chance at a great education. That means supporting public schools, not siphoning money away from all kids for the benefit of a few. Vouchers are bad for Iowa kids.
Iowans are exhausted and fed up with politicians interfering in deeply personal decisions.
Governor Reynolds and GOP lawmakers will not stop until there is a complete abortion ban in Iowa. It’s just politics for them and they’ve forgotten about how this will impact Iowans.
Congratulations to
@KonfrstForHouse
, elected to be the new Iowa House Democratic Leader tonight. Rep. Jennifer Konfrst is the first woman to lead the
@iowahousedems
and leads the only majority-female caucus at the State Capitol.

Iowans are tired of politics as usual. Frankly, so am I. Iowans want us to get things done. I am proud to announce our People Over Politics agenda, focused on the issues Iowans care about most. Each of these has strong majority support among Iowans. Let’s get to work!
I’m proud to have voted against the AEA attacks today - something my constituents overwhelmingly asked me to do. Because I work for them. Not the Governor.
All
@iowahousedems
also voted no, listening to Iowans.
They can rush it through if they want. Iowans will remember.
Iowans: We need better mental health services, child care, lower costs, and great schools.
Governor: How about this instead?

Kim Reynolds has introduced a bill that would define the words “sex,” “man” and “woman” in state law, requiring changes to the way the government collects public health data, issues birth certificates and drivers’ licenses and more
Parent

on vouchers: my special needs son and other children like him will have no “choice” to attend a private school – because privates will choose not to accept him and his specialized needs
#wechoosepublicschools
Throughout the weekend, I felt sad, scared, devastated, & frustrated about the IA Supreme Court decision. All of the things to feel when we lose a fundamental right and bodily autonomy for women in Iowa. But today? Today I am mad & ready to fight like hell to do better for Iowa.
Public school kids deserve the same state investment given to private schools. That’s why I voted to invest $300 million in half a million public school kids next year, the same amount the Governor gave to 36,000 kids in private schools.
#ialegis
I’m still struggling with this. How - HOW - is it possible that millions of dollars went to a company that isn’t (can’t?) keep track of results? It’s infuriating and unacceptable.
Iowa can’t specifically track the number of positive, negative, or inconclusive tests performed by TestIowa, according to data received through a public records request.
I’m looking forward to working with
@RitaHartIA
and the
@iowademocrats
as we grow this party. Proud to be part of a party that puts people over politics.
Important point. It wasn’t enough to start the cruelty in July. They want kids to get kicked off of teams TODAY. In a state where this isn’t an issue. The cruelty is the point.
This bill is "effective immediately," compared to most bills which go into effect on July 1. The consequence is that rather than being allowed to finish the spring season, these athletes will immediately be torn away from their teammates. The cruelty is the point.
“Not one child will receive fewer special Ed services because of this legislation,” we were told when we raised concerns.
How is that possible with almost 500 fewer AEA staff, many of whom provide those services?
The consequences of this terrible law are just starting.
The number of Iowa AEA employees who have retired or resigned since the start of the year has risen to nearly 500.
Every AEA has seen at least 10% of its staff leave, and two have lost 20% or more.
Congratulations to
@DeidreDeJear
—the first Black woman in Iowa history to be a major party nominee for governor!
Deidre has spent her life serving her community, and she’s running to be their champion in Des Moines.
Iowans are proud of our public schools and tired of politics. They don’t care about a new
#ialegis
committee to consider bad ideas like vouchers, banning books, or jailing teachers. We stand with Iowans to support public schools & stop vouchers.
#PeopleOverPolitics
New from
@Rushthewriter
: Iowa House Republicans announced today the creation of a new Education Reform Committee, designed to deal "with bills containing significant reforms to our educational system."
The same teachers who were accused by a Republican leader of having a “sinister agenda” yesterday? The same teachers who are exhausted, but still there for kids every day? The same teachers who can’t be trusted to teach without politicians interfering?
As a means of saying TY —and to help retain our educators—I’m announcing tonight that we’ll use federal ESSR funds to award a $1,000 retention bonus to teachers who stayed on the job through the pandemic and who will continue teaching next year. Your work is essential!
I’m seeing lots of tweets about districts “defying” orders, but what I see is districts following the science and putting students, teachers, and staff first. That’s their job. They know their districts best.
Well- it’s official! I am running for re-election to the Iowa House in 2024! I am proud to lead the IA House Dems and am working around the clock to build our Democratic coalition, but I am going to need your help. Can I count on your support today??
The fact that women are only free when they can decide their own reproductive futures is core to who I am as a person & a leader. As our rights are being threatened,
@Josh_Mandelbaum
stood firm to find a way to protect women in Des Moines. That’s leadership. Vote Josh for Mayor.
When I say I'm the only candidate in this race who stood up for reproductive freedom – don't just take my word for it.
Thanks for issuing this important statement
@ppadvocatesia
. Proud to stand with you in this fight.
…she is using lies & race to divide us for her own political gain. It’s a disgrace.
Iowans deserve more from Reynolds and their elected officials. It’s time to put people over politics. 2/2
During debate, we were criticized for saying this issue was political. Someone ought to tell the Governor then, because she has politicized this since the beginning and did again last night. AEAs aren't failing students. Just ask Iowans.
Fix Iowa's child care crisis? Nope.
Fix Iowa's housing shortage? Nah.
Listen to Iowans? Not a chance.
Take away civil rights from Iowans? Republicans are ON IT.
While Democrats are fighting to tackle real issues, Republicans play politics. Again.

#PeopleOverPolitics
“If Democrats can retake the Iowa House, the people responsible for this debacle will be called to sit in front of microphones and cameras to answer these and many, many more questions.” Let’s bring accountability back to the statehouse.
Like clockwork.
Clockwork to present policy that damages our state's reputation, distracts from the real issues Iowans are facing, has no real purpose, and is peak politics.
It's why Iowans are so sick of politics.
To be clear, this is not a piece of legislation that will actually help anyone. This is what the Governor does any time her policy priorities are faltering: she attacks trans people to rally her base. Since her AEA bill is a disaster, she's bringing out the greatest hits.
Thankful for this day ten years ago, when I was given the gift of renewed sight from a donor cornea transplant. I’ll never be able to fully express my gratitude for this gift, but will spend my life pushing for organ and tissue donation to try.

After more than 2 years, two vaccines and a booster, COVID finally broke through and got to me. I’m resting at home for the 5 day quarantine period while monitoring happenings in the House regularly. Not great timing, but not everything happens according to plan.

Iowa House Democrats are committed to putting people over politics, to listen to voters who feel unheard, and to lead with Iowa values. I’m so honored to lead this team.
@iowahousedems
As I've said to the business community several times over the last few years, worker shortages don't happen in a vacuum. We need to make Iowa a welcoming state & the Governor/legislative republicans have passed bill after bill that drive people away & keep new workers out.
1st half of

To the 58% of Iowans who oppose HJR5, ensuring Iowa women don’t have the right to make their own health care decisions,
@iowahousedems
are united with you. Women, you are seen, valued, and trusted.
I am angry. I am scared. And I’m ready to fight back.
Everyone deserves the right to make their own health care decisions, especially when it comes to reproductive health care. These decisions do not belong in the hands of politicians.
The
@iowahousedems
family is full of fierce and passionate fighters for kids, teachers, and public schools. And our Education Committee members are the best. Long after the gavel fell today, they’re still at the statehouse standing together for all Iowa kids.
As has happened several times this session,
@iowahousedems
identified problems with legislation on the floor and Republicans ignored the concerns and passed the bill anyway. Sounds like politics are more important to them than policy that affects people.
I proudly cast my first vote - in my very baggy ‘90s clothes - in June 1992. I’ve proudly voted regularly since then, whether by absentee or in-person, depending on life’s circumstances. Today I’ll proudly stand up to fight against efforts that make it harder for Iowans to vote.
I’ve been a women’s basketball fan for a long time, and happily buy the WBNA league pass. Women’s basketball is tough, scrappy, exciting - and now with 100% more Caitlin Clark! It’s going to be a great summer.
I was leaving the Capitol this afternoon and was stopped in my tracks by the beautiful choir in the rotunda and the sight of this tree. I’m so honored to serve in this remarkable place.
Thanks to
@WDMDemocrats
for hosting a voter registration drive today at Jaycee Park in West Des Moines. I was glad to join my colleague & friend
@SarahforIowa
and the great volunteers. They’re there until 7 - go get registered!
Oof. It’s been a rough few weeks at the statehouse, with more on the way. If you’re frustrated, sad, or angry about what’s happening at the Capitol, I invite you to channel that toward rebuilding and winning this fall. Thanks for considering a contribution
It absolutely isn’t dead. Keep up the pressure and keep telling your stories!
Meanwhile, every day the legislature doesn’t cut local AEA services to centralize power in Des Moines - because an out of state consultant suggested it - is a good day for Iowa kids.
“Grassley said he wants a “reset” in the conversation around the bill but thinks House Republicans can preserve a number of the provisions in Reynolds’ proposal.”
Sooo… they’re waiting to see what the Senate sends over. The bill isn’t dead
The first deadline of the Legislative Session has ended, and Iowans are more frustrated with politics than ever. I’m disappointed that bills that play politics have taken to time from bills designed to help people.
