Coffee with the Candidates, a thread:
NOW: Former president Donald Trump arrives here for a tailgate at Alpha Gamma Rho - an agriculture fraternity at Iowa State University - ahead of the Cy-Hawk rivalry game. He’ll watch the game from Jack Trice Stadium.
@KCCINews
Rep. Austin Baeth: “By FY2027 this will fund 42,000 students. Currently, there's 33,000 students in private school. So 79% of people [who will get vouchers] are already going to private school. What this really is is a government handout to people who don't need it.”
Rep. Sean Bagniewski:
“My wife went through 150 emails I received yesterday [from Iowans against the bill] & looked up to see where they were from & their party registration. 50% of people who emailed me yesterday were independents & Republicans. This is not a partisan issue.”
Rep. Brown-Powers to House GOP: “You changed the entire legislation process by creating a new committee of 5 to pass 1 bill & you change the rules today to avoid appropriations & nowhere in the budget have we ever had an unlimited general fund appropriation. This is reckless.”
Hours after speaking in Cedar Rapids, FL Gov. Ron DeSantis made an unscheduled stop in Des Moines - shaking hands with Iowans at a BBQ restaurant. Trump was set to hold a rally in Des Moines tonight but canceled this afternoon due to weather.
@KCCINews
A medical mistake left a retired marine paralyzed, but the error happened in MD - a state that caps pain & suffering awards at $750k.

97 year old Bob Van Hord, the oldest WW2 veteran in Carroll County, committed to caucus for DeSantis at a campaign stop in Carroll today.
Trump signs hats and snaps selfies while walking into Whiskey River bar. He’s speaking to crowds here in Ankeny today for a “Commit to Caucus” event.
@KCCINews
State Auditor
@RobSandIA
says he’s “alarmed” by governor’s bill lawmakers are set to vote on today.
“With no transparency obligations, no required public audits, no public records, & no public meetings, uncovering waste, fraud, & abuse of your tax dollars will be much harder.”
Rep. Steckman (D-Mason City):
“Why the rush? In all my years I’ve never seen a bill move this fast. Oh wait - Tomorrow begins Edchoice week. I can see the celebration now for 6% of kids that’ll get help w/this bill. But what ab the half a million kids that will be left behind?”
NOW:
@VP
@KamalaHarris
speaking in Des Moines about reproductive rights
“One does not need to abandon their faith or deeply held beliefs to agree the government should not be telling her or any individual what to do with their body.”

SCOOP: Ron DeSantis is launching a new Faith & Family coalition on Saturday in Des Moines. It includes more than 24 Iowa pastors.

Our conversation with

. We sit down with 3 undecided GOP caucusgoers from Dallas County to talk about his campaign in Iowa and how he’d handle immigration, education, abortion and foreign policy if he were elected president.
Abby Finkenauer takes the stage, telling the crowd she just got off the phone with Franken congratulating him.
“To Mike - what a heck of a campaign.
You gave it everything you had. Thank you for your service to our country, and that we will get to call you our next US Senator.”
Pence gets standing ovation talking Jan. 6th & Trump:
“Trump’s reckless words endangered my family & everyone at the capitol…Trump also demanded I choose between him & our constitution. Now voters will be faced with the same choice. I chose the constitution & I always will”
NOW: Nikki Haley - former UN Ambassador & candidate for 2024 GOP nomination - speaking to a crowd in Nevada.
“The one thing we have to fix above all is this national self loathing. America is not a racist country, it’s a blessed country. We need to go back to loving America.”
Nikki Haley on being the 2nd GOP candidate to announce a presidential run:
“I'm here today because I decided to run for president. I'm a decisive person. I didn't need to wait & see who else was in. I'm not scared of anybody or anything. It was: we've got a country to save.”
According to IA House Democrats - 96% of the people who submitted comments online on IA’s new abortion ban proposal wrote in opposition - 1,025 people. 4% left comments in support - 37 people.

Pence adds: “No one is above the law. I'm confident President Trump can take care of himself.”
The Governor’s school choice bill would give every family that switches from public to private school $7,598. That taxpayer money usually goes to the student’s public school district - it would instead go into student’s own Education Savings Account (ESA). More details below:
A banner reading “Where’s Melania?” flies over crowds tailgating at Jack Trice Stadium. Donald Trump will be in Ames later to watch the Cy-Hawk game.
The former First Lady has stayed off the campaign trail. DeSantis, who’s also in Ames, has made his wife central to his campaign
Reynold’s ‘school choice’ bill was signed into law just 15 days after it was introduced.
@KCCINews
Part of how it moved so fast: the House bill bypassed the normal budget process. Watch below for why House GOP made that unprecedented move & why House Democrats call it unfair.
University of Iowa President issues statement: they will now cover ALL of the $4.175M settlement agreement reached earlier this week. Taxpayers will no longer be on the hook for $2M to settle the racial discrimination lawsuit from Nov. 2020
@NikkiHaley
on setting herself apart in the 2024 GOP field:
“It’s more than just the caucus. We have to elect someone that can win a general election. That requires a new generational leader...

Rep. Adam Zabner (D) suggests changing state motto to “we serve at the pleasure of the governor” & putting that on “Welcome to Iowa” signs.

The bill specifically says that the Department of Education can’t require private schools to “modify its standards for admission or educational program” and cannot “impose an undue burden” on private schools that receive state money through Education Savings Accounts.

@RobSandIA
: "It would be entirely legal if [private schools receiving state $$] took that money & put it into a European vacation for their principal. The total lack of oversight, total lack of transparency to me as state auditor is pretty appalling."

Rep. Sami Scheetz (D-Cedar Rapids):
“I don't understand why some parents get the right to make decisions about their children's medical care, while others don't…While this legislation will surely cost lives, it costs absolutely absolutely nothing to just leave people alone.”
1st Republican to speak against the bill Rep. Lohse:
“Parents have been the

priority within my caucus. [Parents] should be free to make that decision for their kid.
It’s not my job as a legislator…[or] as a human to judge them in the rightness or wrongness of that decision.”
Rep. Monica Kurth: “I did a rough count and found that about 1 out of every 40 emails I've received are in favor of this bill. That's 2.5% in favor & 97.5% oppposed.
Iowans are concerned about their kids and the quality of the public school education in our state.”
