Brian James Kinzie, 10/6/72 - 1/18/14.
But today is a day to focus on the dash, and not the dates. Because Kinzie put a *hell* of a lot of life into that dash.
And I like to think that he’s up there smiling knowing there’s a Kinzie prowling the sidelines in a headset again.
You think your son playing football is dangerous? I’ll tell you what’s really dangerous: Your teenage son not being involved with an organization that works constantly to reinforce decision making, character, keeping grades up, and sacrifice for the good of the team.
My sport is different. This isn’t golf. There are rec leagues in basketball, pools all over the United States, people run their whole lives... 94% of my guys get 4 seasons, and then they’ll never put on a helmet and shoulder pads again. For as long as they live.
I want a season.
Football coach random fact: every high school football coach knows exactly which bathroom in the building provides the most solitude on Friday morning.
I coach. I don’t hunt, I don’t golf, I don’t fish, I don’t ski… Football is who I am. It’s been a crazy journey for the last 21 years, and the shortcomings have taught me more than the successes. I’m just ready to get started on season 19.

I’m at anniversary dinner with my wife, still texting football stuff with my assistant coaches.
I apologize, and she just said “we got married during football season, I know what I signed up for” and kept eating.
I married the right one. 😉
Dudes really think they’re head coach material after one year as an assistant, but they haven’t figured out how to make a practice plan or a scouting report. Here’s a whistle, Susan, I’ll be at Buffalo Wild Wings. 0:00 on HUDL this week? Have fun.
Now that it’s School Board official, I am beyond excited to announce that I am the head varsity football coach at Brandywine Jr/Sr HS in Niles, MI! I’m ready to get to work and start my new chapter as a Bobcat

Congrats to Camp Point Central (IL) on their state title! 50 passing attempts all season, 3,940 rushing yards, and this is what a home game looks like.
How can you not be romantic about small school football?!
Want to know why I think football is the greatest game? This picture (can’t remember where I stole it from) says it all: Guys sacrificing it all for the love of their brother... And their names will never be called on the PA system Friday Night unless they mess up.
What if I told you that tonight a team took the opening 2nd half kickoff, and then ran the triple option for 12+ minutes and the other team didn’t take possession until the 2nd minute of the 4th quarter?
If you love America, you love Warsaw football and Bart Curtis.
Today was humbling. We were on the practice field preparing for a football game while, across the street, our community marched in memory of a 7-year old little girl.
I’m just a FB coach. I wish I knew the answers, but I don’t. All I can do is love the hell out of these boys.
Didn’t have access to my field... But there’s a candle lit at Jackson Field in South Bend as long as the wind will allow. Condolences from the

Why football is the best sport, a short story: The VAST majority of football programs don’t cut anybody. You show up and put your work in? You have a home in our locker room. You have a brother in your team mate. You might not be varsity, but you’ll never be turned away.*
This year was Ronnie’s first (and only) year of football. He plays scout team every day. Some days guard, some days wide receiver. He has never complained about playing time, and has maybe 10 snaps all year. Today he got his first swing at the rock. He is a great teammate.
This afternoon two teams from 3 counties apart played a scrimmage. It was hard-fought. We hit each other. We tested each other. And when it was done we waved “good game” from opposite sides of the field.
Thank you to all of the adults that believed we could still play.
18 seasons of coaching & 12.5 years of teaching in the State of Indiana. It’s been great, but now it’s time to go North “beyond the wall” to Michigan with the other wildlings.
Love that I’m sitting here, in my kitchen, watching the IHSAA State Finals. Amazing that we made it here in spite of all of the hardships.
I love the IHSAA, the IFCA, all of the ADs and coaches and health department people... Just everyone that made this possible.
Want to be a head coach? Here’s the best advice I can give: Make yourself the best assistant coach you can possibly be. Volunteer. Go to JV games. Go to middle school games. Learn how to run the scoreboard, learn how to do the laundry, learn how to tag HUDL… coaching = service
So the IHSAA and IFCA have spoken. With all of these colleges having positive tests, PLEASE don’t be the staff that cuts corners and causes us to lose football for 2020. Follow the guidelines, and when in doubt err on the side of being overly cautious!
June 22, 2010. The worst phone call of my entire life. The worst possible experience any parent could ever live through.
So beyond grateful to God and the amazing professionals who fought against the odds and I’m thankful that my son is still here.
January 18, 2014... I’ll never forget that 2am phone call, and I’ll never forget my mother’s reaction to finding out you were gone.
Please know, no matter how bad things seem, there are ALWAYS people that care, people who will listen.

Unwritten rule of FB: When a linemen scores, you can keep the flag in your pocket - we’ll go ahead and walk off the 15 ourselves. 😅
Love you,
@Official_Tyson9
!
Young men are 4-5 times more likely to commit suicide than their female counterparts. Men make up 90% of the prison population, and males make up 60% of high school dropouts.
Coaches, go hug your young men. Tell them you love them. Let them know that they matter.
Please refer to my tweet from a few days ago. Young people today deal with things OUR generation didn’t. If you’re a coach/educator and you aren’t all-in for the kids, please retire and make way for someone who is. Nobody cares about your record if you aren’t making a difference
So frickin' pumped... One of my former players just called me last night to let me know that he went to Western Michigan's walk-on tryouts, and he made the squad. He's currently being fitted for equipment. Congrats, Jake - You gambled on yourself and worked your tail off!
No weightroom? No problem. Getting creative is the name of the game in the “new normal.”
Cinder blocks come in weights from 30 to 60 (that I saw!), can be labeled for each player, and can get sprayed down after practices. And they’re literally $1 a piece!
Last week, we had a new staff member’s son join our JV team, officially bringing our total roster to 40. 40 might not seem like a big deal to a lot of you, but to a little school like Brandywine it means that 11% of our entire school now plays football.

Today, one of my coworkers joked “I bet you’re glad you don’t have to play in this weather!”
Are you kidding? I’d die to be out there right now. Those of you lucky enough to have the chance, cherish it. Win or lose, you’re doing something incredibly special tonight.
It’s an honor that Coach Edison, Mr. Henderson, Mr. Gavin, and the Riley community trust me with their program for the 2020 season.
I promise to love these young men and always do what’s in their best interest, and I’m excited for you to see what we have in store.

No feeling more helpless than picking your kid up from school in tears because other kids were teasing him in school that day. Like his scars are his fault.
To all of my coaching friends whose seasons ended last night… One of the most relatable and gut-wrenching scenes in film: Friday Night Lights, Coach Gaines taking off the Seniors’ name plates from his depth chart. God bless all of you for the work you do, not everyone can do it.
@JimIrsay
Head football coach of a tremendous group of young men at Riley HS in South Bend who are working their tails off to try to get ready for the season, and I would love to be able to use the $400 to help buy every one of them some equipment!
6 years ago today, we laid my brother to rest on his favorite of days: A snow day. 3 busses parked in the funeral home parking lot, a full spillover room inside, and we held up traffic for 10 minutes. What other job allows you to impact that many lives?
So my wife and her sister went to go see the Taylor Swift movie/concert, and she made me a

friendship bracelet and I’m more in love with her now than I’ve ever been.

My wife is addicted to watching Love Is Blind on Netflix, but I can’t help but think that most of those people are probably just there for the zip line.

January 18th is a day that I always dread on the calendar. 8 years ago today I lost my best friend, and not a single day has gone by that I haven’t thought about him. Miss you, BK.

@wretherford
That’s what’s so frustrating. We take temps daily. Sanitize as they walk in, and again when they leave. Masks being worn. Zero equipment in use, all body weight workouts and conditioning.
... And then you go to the store, and you see tons of people doing their own thing.
@MadScientistFF
Used the decorative towel. You know, the one that’s hung prominently on the towel rack in the bathroom but your not allowed to use *as* a towel?
Assistant coach, after last night’s scrimmage: “You know, Coach, I’m kind of thinking we should still be spraying these pads down with sanitizer every day even after coronavirus is over.”
A fair point.
Any college coaches looking for a c/o ‘25 MLB/FB who has a 4.0, runs a 20mph 10-yard fly, wear a cowboy collar, and rides bulls in his free time? My DMs are open.
If you recognized the amount of trauma and upheaval that our young people have been through in their lifetimes, you’d wear the title of “player’s coach” like a badge of honor.
Finally, there’s a stone worthy of the man that Brian James Kinzie was.
And tomorrow I take to the sidelines for my first game as DC, and I can’t help but think the timing isn’t a coincidence.
I can’t wait to be out there with the only brothers I have left.
