.@betterhelp exploited the fact that it’s so hard to find a therapist so folks would use their platform. All to harvest and sell extremely personal health data. And they had big help from partnerships with tons of podcasters/creators who helped them gain consumer trust.
BetterHelp promised to keep user info private — then it revealed it to Facebook, Snapchat, and Pinterest. The data included emails, IP addresses, and personal answers to health questions. The company is now paying $7.8 million to settle charges brought by the FTC.

This is another reason to give regular updates during a crisis. Silence creates a vacuum where leaks or (even worse) misinformation drives the narrative. Even if there’s no change or even if it’s gotten worse, silence looks like a coverup especially in a city known for coverups.

This is devastating. I am not exaggerating when I say that @sabrinaamorenoo’s reporting on inequities in VA’s COVID response *directly* led to policy changes and increased vaccine accessibility for marginalized communities. Her work and her words saved countless lives.
As of next Wednesday, RTD no longer has a full-time COVID reporter and no one covering health in Virginia in the middle of a pandemic. I’ll now be covering Chesterfield County government and schools. Tips are welcome.
