I’m very happy to be elected the secretary of Leeds Young Labour, and I’m looking forward to working with the committee and members to deliver Labour victories this year.
Thanks to all that came to our inaugural meeting! 🌹
Thank you to all those that came to our inaugural AGM last night. 🌹
We look forward to organising campaign days and social events in the future, and ensuring that Leeds returns Labour councillors and MPs this year.
Below is a thread of what we got up to 🧵⬇️
Note also with this:
- Mandatory national service would cost £2.5 billion.
- Introducing universal free school meals would cost between £1.8 - £2.5 billion and tackle child poverty.
I know which I’d rather spend £2.5 billion on!
🚨 NEW: The Conservatives have unveiled plans to bring back mandatory national service if re-elected
Sunak says the plans, which would see 18-year-olds choose between service in the forces and community volunteering, will inspire “pride in our country”
Not only is Rosie Duffield’s response wrong, but she has then liked tweets praising her reaction.
No MP should behave in this way. If
@UKLabour
has zero tolerance towards bigotry, then the party must remove the whip.
I joined the Labour Party 7 years ago today.
Labour was last elected to government when I was 3 years old - I’m now 22!
I’ve grown up watching Tory governments deprive working class communities/families like mine.
Hopefully this year we finally elect a Labour gov.
Amazing! Re-elected with over 50% of the vote. A massive congratulations
@TracyBrabin
! 🎉
West, North, and South Yorkshire mayors are all Labour! 🌹
(I’m slightly biased, but Yorkshire’s the best).
@KarlTurnerMP
@TomTugendhat
@UKLabour
If they’re talking about taking the country backwards, we’ve got the highest tax burden since the 1950s and the highest rate of inflation since the 1980s!
@OwenJones84
@hollywills
@Schofe
I found it bizarre that some people are more enraged by this than they are about the rising levels of poverty in the U.K. If they only they cared that much about issues that really matter, then maybe change would be possible.
Very happy to be elected as the Youth Officer for Leeds South CLP at our inaugural meeting.
I’m looking forward to working alongside young members within the CLP and across Leeds ahead of the next election. 🌹
Thank you to all members of the Labour Students committee who signed this.
We’re called the Labour Party for a reason, and our party leadership ought to remember who they’re here to represent and fight for.
Solidarity with the UCU ✊
A brilliant time attending the campaign launch of a great comrade who fights for working class communities whether in Parliament or on picket lines
@RichardBurgon
It’s unfair to label the slates as simply “pro-leadership” and “left”. It encourages factionalism.
There’s people on both slates that have praised and criticised the leadership, and people on both slates that consider themselves left-wing.
Every candidate wants a Labour gov!
The classism and sexism directed towards Angela Rayner shows how so many conservatives are fearful of Northern working-class women, especially those that are prominent in public life.
Tracy has already delivered so much for West Yorkshire in just a few years. There’s much more to come by re-electing her in May.
It’s also great to have working-class women who grew up in council housing elected to office - representation matters! 🌹
Shame. Anger. Disgust.
Even as Labour MPs line up to voice their opposition for this despicable and cruel attack on trans children the party endorses transphobic policy.
We deserve so much better from Labour than bigoted leadership and absent allies unwilling to speak up.
The UCU, Unite and Unison are all set to strike at the university of Leeds. As a student I support their decision completely and hope that others will too. Staff working conditions are student learning conditions.
I’m not endorsing any slates for the upcoming YL and LS elections as I’ll be voting for candidates based on merit.
I encourage others to fairly consider every candidate too.
I’m undecided on most positions, but here’s some standout candidates that have my support:
On the Corbyn point:
Do you agree with Keir when he said this while running for the leadership?:
“Corbyn was right to make us the party to fight austerity. We build on that, we don’t trash it going forward”.
Just for clarity, if you are an apologist for Putin or China or Hamas or antisemitism, or you think Corbyn was anything other than a disaster for Labour and a moral disgrace, I DO NOT WANT your vote in the NEC elections. Please go through all 19 candidates and put me 19th. Thanks
Very proud that the Labour Party in Leeds is standing up for worker’s rights and supporting the scrapping of anti-trade union legislation!
@Leeds_Labour
A great article by
@jon_trickett
. Socialists have a lot to give to the Labour Party, and we shouldn’t be discouraged from advocating for radical policies. Such policies could completely transform our country, and finally give power to the working class.
We need to be more than simply competent managers of the existing broken system. We must build a new settlement built on social justice.
My article for
@LabourList
👇
Wes Streeting is not fit to be Labour’s Shadow Health Secretary.
I would expect this rhetoric (and BMA criticisms) to come from a Tory MP, but certainly not a Labour MP.
Britain’s medical chiefs must accept that money is tight, says
@wesstreeting
, and they can learn lessons from Singapore high-tech hospitals
✍️
@ShaunLintern
I think it’s unfair for LabourList to keep using the term “pro-leadership”.
Candidates shouldn’t be defined by the leadership. It encourages factionalism, and leads to voting based on slates, not merit.
Also note, every candidate in the YL and LS elections wants a Labour gov!
🚨NEW: The Government has stepped in to prevent Sadiq Khan torpedoing plans for the MSG Sphere in east London.
Michael Gove is considering whether to call in the Mayor's decision to block the development
@TheCentreLefty
I disagree. His policies were often in line with mainstream social democracy in Europe (especially the 2017 manifesto). Although we lost elections, Labour still received more votes than we did in 2001, 2005, 2010 and 2015. I think one issue is that we didn’t have enough 1/2
It’s fine to disagree with Owen’s politics, but it’s wrong to celebrate a member of the party leaving.
It’s a shame that some don’t feel Labour is the party for them anymore.
We should be a broad church party. We should be listening to, not belittling, most ex-members.
I just quit Labour after 24 years.
We deserve better than the race to the bottom between Labour and the Tories.
Labour want you to think there's no alternative. But there is.
Join it:
When you have to get up at 4:30 to get an overpriced flight to Manchester for a family party because Mick Lynch has called a strike for jobs which could just be replaced by computers & we’d never have to worry about this again.
In 1900 the Labour Party was founded to “promote legislation in the direct interests of labour”.
The current Labour leadership ought to remember why our party was created and who we should be seeking to represent.
It’s been great to campaign alongside amazing Labour activists and candidates. Congratulations to all of our re-elected and newly elected Labour councillors!
As far as I’m aware, no student union has a position against the strikes. Rather, they support them (including my own university).
Most students are behind the strikes. We want a fair deal for staff.
No worker should be forced to cross picket lines.
University students are being let down by relentless strikes
We want to end this disruption and the resulting impact on their education
So today, I’m announcing that we will consult to introduce minimum service levels in universities so students get the teaching they deserve
Solidarity to
@uculeeds
for their current industrial action, and to
@leedsucu
and
@UoLUnison
with their upcoming strikes. ✊🏻
All are fighting for a fairer education system that works for both staff and students.
Solidarity to
@leedsucu
@UoLUnison
@LeedsUniUnite
and with all universities and colleges on strike. Students support you, and we want you to have victory. ✊🏻
The morale is high on the picket lines. It’s great to have the support of
@RichardBurgon
and so many members of the public. Solidarity to all workers on strike. ✊🏻 A win for unions is a win for students.
Another day, another picket line ✊️
We, as students, proudly support UCU, Unison and Unite strike action. Their demands are reasonable and it’s time for a fair deal.
We will be back again ON MONDAY (28th) on the Parkinson Steps at 11.30am to support Unison and Unite.
It was great to attend the campaign launch of my friend
@alexsobel
.
I’ve spent the last couple of years campaigning with Alex and know how dedicated he is to his constituents. He’s also a committed environmentalist.
He deserves to be returned to Parliament in July. 🌹
Local elections 2024. ✅
Congratulations to all Labour councillors elected, and commiserations to all the brilliant Labour candidates that ran really positive campaigns. 🌹
I’m glad that Labour Students have deleted the post. A few points though:
1) It should never have been posted.
2) A second tweet justifying it should never have been posted.
3) When a majority of the democratically elected committee disapprove of a post, it should be deleted.
People are suffering in a devastating conflict.
It’s not appropriate to be making memes out of the recent ceasefire motions/debates in Parliament.
As a Labour Students member I’m embarrassed that the post hasn’t been removed yet.
Thank you to everyone NLSC member that signed this. (Although it’s very disappointing that some didn’t).
This is also one of many reasons that I’ll be voting for Alex as YL Chair. They are not afraid of holding the party to account.
Given the horrific abuse some of our young members have faced, I and other members of the National Labour Students Committee want to share a message of solidarity with our trans members and allies.
Solidarity to all of you who have stood up for equality and human rights 🏳️⚧️✊
@LaurenD2212
As disappointed as I am with the party’s official position, it is reassuring to know that many members are calling this out.
In my CLP we unanimously voted for a motion that defined transphobia. It seems most members are on the same page.
Tuesday, I’ll go to Michigan to join the picket line and stand in solidarity with the men and women of UAW as they fight for a fair share of the value they helped create.
It’s time for a win-win agreement that keeps American auto manufacturing thriving with well-paid UAW jobs.
The amount of abuse and insulting comments Ollie has received from Labour members (many of whom are grown adults), is completely wrong.
Rather than shouting him down and insulting him, engaged respectfully in debate.
It’s not that serious, it’s just a hypothetical reshuffle.
Regarding transphobia in the Labour Party:
1) Solidarity to the transgender community. The Labour Party must be a place that welcomes, respects, and represents transgender people.
2) Solidarity to all those receiving abuse for speaking out against transphobia.

Brilliant news for West Yorkshire!
After decades of chaotic private control, buses will be back in public control.
Another mayoral pledge from 2021 achieved! 🌹
📣WHAT A MOMENT!
Bringing buses back into public control in West Yorkshire.
Historic decision that will impact on our region for decades to come, enabling us to deliver a better connected West Yorkshire that works for all. 🚌💪🏻🚌💪🏻🚌💪🏻🚌💪🏻🚌
Leeds Labour Society condemns any and all forms of Holocaust revisionism and transphobia.
These ahistorical and offensive views have no place in the Labour Party.
We stand in solidarity with the trans community 🏳️⚧️
It’s great that Leeds is (finally) getting a tram. Just like London, West Yorkshire deserve a mass transit system.
Labour mayors are leading the way in delivering much needed transport reform, especially in the North.
It’s yet another reason to vote Tracy for Mayor of WY.
Today, we’ve set out plans to submit to government, for a tram running from Leeds to Bradford!
This would be just the first phase of a mass transit system to connect the whole region - helping our communities thrive and our economy flourish.
Learn more:
Solidarity, as always, with the trans community. 🏳️⚧️
Our party must do so much more to protect and be a welcoming space for trans people, and especially young trans people.
We are deeply concerned that the Shadow Health Secretary appears intent on uncritically accepting the Cass Review as policy.
Aspects of the review endanger medical autonomy, disregard crucial evidence and do not acknowledge the real and serious needs of Trans young people (1/2)
Brilliant news. Sadiq Khan has won on a progressive platform of free school meals, building more council houses, ending rough sleeping, and more. 🌹
Very glad that the people of London rejected the Tories backwards politics.
🚨 | NEW: Rishi Sunak has accepted ALL public sector pay rise recommendations following pressure from his own Cabinet

Junior doctors: 6%
Police: 6%
Prison officers: 6%
Armed forces: 5-6%

It’s been great to work alongside young Labour activists across Leeds to help relaunch Leeds Young Labour.
If you’re a young member in Leeds come along to our relaunch on February 7th. Please also give our profile a follow!

🚨We're excited to announce that Leeds Young Labour will be relaunched on the 7th of February!
Are you a Labour member in Leeds aged 14-26? Come and join us at our relaunch where we'll be electing a new Executive Committee for the year.

People are suffering in a devastating conflict.
It’s not appropriate to be making memes out of the recent ceasefire motions/debates in Parliament.
As a Labour Students member I’m embarrassed that the post hasn’t been removed yet.
Best of luck to all the Labour candidates in Leeds, especially
@KatieJWhite
and
@MarkJSewards
who I hope will be walking into Parliament as MPs for the first time in July. 🌹

Solidarity to
@ucu
@leedsucu
with their upcoming industrial action. Deciding to strike is never easy, but unions have been left with no choice. Student and staff solidarity is going to be essential.
The UCU results are in:
Votes in favour of strike action over pension cuts: 84.9% (60.2% turnout)
Votes in favour of strike action over a real-term pay cut: 81.1% (57.8% turnout).
This means the UCU *will* be on strike nationally, including at the University of Leeds.
✊️
Cities and regions outside of London deserve to have a top quality transport system, but for years we’ve been left behind.
West Yorkshire is finally getting a mass transit system. Another reason to vote Labour in this years mayoral elections.
West Yorkshire is gearing up for a new Mass Transit system, linking communities with quick, reliable services. 🚍🚇
Integrated with cycling, walking, bus, and rail, this bold investment promises transformation for generations. 🌟💚

If you’re a Uni of Leeds student, I would encourage you to vote for pro-strike candidates at the LeadLUU elections.
LUU policy supports the strike for the next three years, but it’s important that we retain an executive that supports the strikes and our unions.
*Vote for pro-strike candidates in the LeadLUU elections*
LSSS created a pledge which candidates could sign. The pledge is:
“If elected, I pledge to recognise and support university staff on strike (from the UCU, Unison, and Unite trade unions) and action short of a strike”.
Completely agree. I also think that if you consider to be a socialist, you should be advocating for free and accessible education for all. Tuition fees put a price tag on education, which every socialist should object to.
I couldn’t make it to the campaign launch for
@TracyBrabin
today, but I’m looking forward to campaigning for her this year.
Tracy has a track record of delivering for West Yorkshire and has delivered on her pledges. Labour in power can deliver. 🌹
Adam says we should judge Labour’s handling of the NHS by looking at our last time in office. Let’s do that.
Declining waiting times and rising wages for nurses.

There was a great showing of solidarity in Leeds today, in defence of the right to strike, and supporting trade unions on strike today.✊🏻It was great to hear from union representatives, the Labour MP
@jon_trickett
and the leader of Leeds City Council
@JamesLewisLab
.
I’ve had family members go through work capability assessments and quite simply they are dehumanising, degrading, and often reject medical evidence.
Making assessments stricter would make it even harder for so many to live dignified and healthy lives.
It was great to be out this weekend with Labour activists delivering Richard Burgon’s constituency report.
A Labour government is needed more than ever.
Out campaigning in Halton this evening in the glorious sunshine. Lots of support for Labour. Thanks to everyone who came along for our first campaign session, including
@helenhayden01
@TheCentreLefty
I disagree on the second point. Sunak continuously references Corbyn and mischaracterises Labour policy under him. For example, Labour remained committed to NATO and trident under his leadership, but Sunak said Labour under Corbyn wasn’t committed to that. 1/2
@TheCentreLefty
When blatant lies like that are being said by the PM, it should be called out. It’s not just Corbyn that should be calling it out, the Labour Party should too, as we shouldn’t be allowing our positions to be misrepresented. I’m glad Corbyn has raised this point. 2/2
Congratulations to all those elected to the YL and LS committees, and commiserations to everybody who also ran excellent campaigns.
Let’s hope that as young members we can continue to work cross-factionally to make sure that YL and LS represent the best interests of all. 🌹

We look forward to continuing to support our campus unions, and building a higher education system that works for all. ✊
Happy New Year to all my friends and family!!
Very proud to start the new year, supporting the junior doctors and standing on their picket line this morning at the LGI in Leeds city centre. ✊

Solidarity! As a student I completely stand by this industrial action and would encourage others not to allow staff and students to be divided against each other on this.
The irony is that the Tories constantly moan that free speech is being attacked, and yet when a Tory mildly criticises the party in a polite way they’re forcibly removed from the room.
I’m proud that Leeds stands up to fascists.
The city has a long history of doing so.
In 1936 when Oswald Mosley and his fascist supporters attempted to march through Leeds, over 30,000 Leeds residents protested and prevented them doing so.
Big well done to all antiracists & antifascists in Leeds today - outnumbering the 50 to 60 fascists more than 5-1.
Great to have trade unions, students, campaigners from
@Dis_PPL_Protest
and
@RichardBurgon

@SUTRLeeds
and others on the streets to say
#RefugeesWelcome

@OliProbertHill
1) You’re creating divisions between the working class and immigrants, by assuming immigrants are separate to the working class and working class interests.
2) You can help immigrants, homeless people, and veterans all at the same time.
