Today marks 80 years since the liberation of Auschwitz. In Parliament last week, I paid tribute to David Makofski, a man from Leeds who helped hundreds of Jews escape from the Nazis. Today, we mourn the millions of lives lost, and reaffirm our commitment to fight antisemitism.

5 years ago today, we woke up to a huge Tory majority under Boris Johnson. Today, we wake up with a Labour Government. We’ve secured a pay rise for those on the lowest incomes. We’re creating 10,000s of extra NHS appointments each week. We’re fixing our broken asylum system.

Faced with a choice of investment or decline, we’re choosing investment. Rooted in a conviction that our purpose is to make ordinary people better off. That we’ve come so far in 5 years is a testament to the change seen in the Labour Party. Together, we’re changing Britain.

The Tories watched net migration soar to almost 1 million, breaking their own promise to ‘get a grip,’ on the system. Now, Labour are returning order by speeding up decisions, allowing those with legitimate claims to enter work, and deporting those who have no right to be here.

Labour will take back our streets from criminals. Crime and ASB don't just impact inner cities, but our rural towns and villages too. This is what we’re doing to tackle the problem👇

Today’s news that the estimated net migration statistics for 2023 have increased to 906,000 confirms what we already knew - Boris Johnson, aided by prominent Conservatives like Kemi Badenoch, turned Britain into a national experiment on insecure borders.

We’ll achieve this not through gimmicks or false promises, but by properly resourcing the Home Office so that cases are processed quickly. In doing so, we’ll provide safety for refugees fleeing conflict and swiftly return those who have no right to be here.

Like my constituents in Selby and Kippax, I support the government in its efforts to control migration, tackle the small boats crisis and make our system fairer for genuine claimants and UK taxpayers. The hard work has already started👇
