If you live in Micklefield, Kippax, Ledston Luck, Ledsham, Allerton Bywater, Ledston, Methley & Mickletown we're your local councillors and here's how to get in touch with us.
Given Leeds - Manchester electrification has been ‘announced’ in 2011, 2015, 2018 and 2021 but not expected until the early 2030s I know how frustrating banal railway announcements can be …
Since the Conservatives and Lib Dem’s imposed austerity on Leeds Council over £2.4 billion has been taken from funding for local services.
We were asked to bid for levelling up cash for projects across Leeds and got £0.
£0 That’s how much the Conservatives value Leeds.
Good argument for local > national journalism here. National media uncritically repeat briefing that northern rail will lose franchise. Northern journos who have stuck with the detail actually know what’s going on so spot the real story of further government inaction.
As a gay man growing up in the early 1990s the names of obscure Tory MPs that made political points out of prejudice against us are still stuck with me. I'd hoped that in 30 years things would have got better for the LGBT+ community from politics but today is a shameful new low.
For the last time my bus home to Kippax from Lower Briggate will be £3.50 thanks to the labour team
@TracyBrabin
it will be £2 from Sunday! Making a difference during the Conservative Party’s cost of living crisis.
Canary Wharf has had huge public transport investment. Docklands Light Railway & Jubilee Line Tube for local journeys and Crossrail for longer ones. For Leeds the Conservative Government haven’t moved in 18 months on tram study or high speed trains to Leeds from Manc & Ldn …
It’s the day many families in Leeds lose £20 a week as the Conservative government cuts Universal Credit. 24% of children in Leeds live in poverty and around 40% of people who get UC are working but still in poverty. To do this is a heartless decision by the Conservatives.
In May
@TracyBrabin
was elected 1st Mayor of West Yorkshire with a mandate to bring buses back under public control, introduce simpler fares, contactless ticketing & greener buses. Sad to see Conservatives at today’s Combined Authority meeting not voting to take this forward.
Leeds 1 - 0 Truss
FT
Liz Truss made her core message that our city, public services and schools weren’t good enough. Turns out it’s not us but her and the Conservatives that are not up to standard.
We need a general election now.
Conservatives illustrate a story about Leeds with a picture of Manchester and the sea. I guess if your sat in London trying to figure the North out we’re close to both on a map …
Thanks to everyone who voted for me on Thursday and by post and I’ve been re-elected with over 50% of the votes.
Look forward to working with everyone in our ward in the years ahead with the top team
@cllr_harland
and Mirelle Midgley.
On my way to Leeds Arena to see my votes being counted and another 30 Leeds council wards. Expecting a result in mine just before
#LUFC
game kicks off.
Thanks to local Labour Party members who picked me as candidate for the next election in Kippax & Methley ward and to keep working with
@cllr_harland
&
@mikemiIIar
! My election is def May 2nd ‘24 and we’ll campaign with
@TracyBrabin
running for West Yorks mayor the same day 1/2
We thought we’d seen off
#fracking
in our area but the Sunday Telegraph reports it’s back on the Conservative governments agenda. People don’t want the problems it causes in their community.
@cllr_harland
@MirelleKMLabour
& I will again fight any attempts to frack under our ward.
Despite having £2 billion of government funding axed by the Conservatives I’m pleased that
@Leeds_Labour
kept every children’s centre open in Leeds.
Now the Conservatives want children’s centres reopening - what a disaster the last 10 years of Tory austerity has been.
BREAKING:
@TracyBrabin
decides to franchise buses in West Yorkhshire and end decades of deregulation and decline.
@leeds_labour
councillors voted to ask for this in our council meeting in November and with one of our bus companies the country's worst we need this change!
After 10 years of conservative austerity cuts has taken £2 billion out of Leeds Council’s services there’s a few empty council buildings we could sell them ....
Proud at the announcement
@LeedsCC_News
will continue to provide Free School Meals for eligible children through the full 6 week summer break.
@Leeds_Labour
will not allow young people to take the brunt of covid and austerity.
First 2
@Leeds_Labour
councillors elected tonight and congratulations to Cllrs Zara Hussain and Lisa Martin in Roundhay ward. 31 wards are counting the votes tomorrow!
NEW : independent figures from
@BBCLeeds
show the shockingly huge amount of money that’s been taken away from Leeds City Council’s funding by the Conservative Government over recent years.
The decisions made in London will hit local services hard.
I went to a Leeds council comprehensive about the same time and don’t remember ‘political correctness’ but I do remember buildings falling apart because the Conservative governments of the 80s/ 90s chose tax cuts for the rich and not public services… seems nothing has changed.
BREAKING: following
@leeds_labour
commitment to have glass recycling through everyone’s green bin Cllr Mohammed Rafique has just announced that this new free service will start on August 1st this year.
Look forward to working to get
@TracyBrabin
elected as our Mayor in May to start the same route in West Yorkshire. Shows what Labour people can do when elected!
Lots of anger at Leeds Council Labour Group tonight after media reports that academy chains in the area are deliberately ‘off-rolling’ lower achieving children to inflate their results. Here’s what they are doing:
I too regularly go litterpicking wearing a suit in order to try and find the £billions of transport funding Leeds & Yorkshire needs to catch up with Surrey and London … does feel like levelling up is getting watered down to can you get volunteers to carry out public services.
First meeting of Leeds Council since the elections in May and we now have more
@Leeds_Labour
councillors in the chamber. Pleased to welcome our 11 newly elected Labour councillors and we’ll all do our best for Leeds.
Congratulations to
@mikemiIIar
just elected in Kippax and Methley ward today to work alongside
@cllr_harland
and I.
Thanks to everyone who voted Labour and helped our campaign 🌹
@MethleyLabour
£100 million would make huge a difference to Leeds Council’s local front line services as our medium term financial plan shows a budget funding gap of £60m for financial year 2024/25.
A £100 million study that after less than 3 months has been rendered ‘no longer relevant’ 🙄
Confirmation here from Rail Minister
@HuwMerriman
that HS2 trains definitely won't come to Leeds (after the Government ordered a £100m study into whether it might be possible)
He says the study is 'no longer relevant'
"We are extremely disappointed that Ukraine will be unable to host in 2023, but it would be an honour to host on behalf of them, West Yorkshire is home to a large number of Ukrainians. If successful with our bid, we will get the local Ukrainian community involved with our plan.”
From April we will be paying the National Living Wage foundation Living Wage rate of £8.75 an hour as our minimum pay rate for all Leeds City Council staff.
@cllrjudithblake
@LeedsLabour2018
Called into see the vaccine walk-in centre at
@LeedsMarkets
with
@CllrSalmaArif
and good to see people were queuing out the door! Pleased we could say thanks to the staff and volunteers working today.
Really sad news. For those of us who worked with Bernard we will remember him as force of nature and he has left a legacy for Leeds especially in culture and services for disabled people. People still talk about his memorable year as Lord Mayor many years on.
Bradford should be integral to investment in the north’s railways and any claims of ‘levelling up’ and tackling climate change are pretty hollow if one of the biggest and youngest cities in the north continues to be left out of inter city rail services.
@SHinchcliffe
@TracyBrabin
Like Liz Truss I went to Leeds Council schools in the Thatcher and Major years and the truth is it was Conservative Government underfunding of schools for 18 years that really let kids down.
@Jonathan_Pryor
@leeds_labour
@LGA_Labour
Leeds tram was in the Conservatives last election manifesto. Leeds, Hull & Sheffield electrification spread across 2011 autumn statement, 2015 spring budget & 2015 ‘Northern Sparks’ northern rail electrification task force final report.
This all looks good on paper but think I'm right in saying these are all things that have been sought for years in addition to HS2 rather than instead of it.
And Government's Network North webpage is silent on key question of 'when' any of this is actually going to happen
Moving vigil on lower briggate as Leeds sends love and solidarity to Colorado Springs. Proud to say a few words and thanks to everyone who organised and showed up
Quick refresh for northerners getting giddy at Conservatives talking about our trains. In 2011 Osbourne promised trans-Pennine electrification & a new bit of tube in that London. In 2019 the tube is being dug and we’ve got nowt but another ‘announcement’ ...
#northsouthdivide
Important elections are happening on Thursday 4 May. To vote in person you will need to take photo ID with you to the polling station.
To make voting easier you can apply for a Postal Vote today. Anyone can apply for a postal vote, no special reasons or requirements are needed.
Local Conservative Party councillors and MPs in Leeds and Yorkshire must be held to account in elections if local public services are cut to fund tax cuts for a few very rich people.
Fantastic
@Leeds_Labour
campaign launch for council and mayor election on May 2nd 2024
! Good to see so many brilliant candidates, councillors, MPs, volunteers &
@TracyBrabin
!
perfect garden accessory …. my house in Kippax and all our council ward has been put into the Selby constituency for the July 4th election and everyone should vote for
@Mather_Keir
BREAKING: Sunak is going to take a day off the trail tomorrow in a highly unusual move so early in the campaign. He will spend it at home in talks with his senior aides. But the Tories insist this is NOT a campaign relaunch.
Thank you to colleagues from the
@Leeds_Labour
who joined Mohammed Iqbal and I at
#LeedsDock
today to speak to residents.
The big issue was of course parcel thefts, but we also picked up quite a bit of personal casework from residents.
Really sorry to hear that Jayne Hill passed away, I’ve known and worked with Jayne almost as long as anyone in the Labour Party and I know she touch the lives of so many activists over her years of work. Thoughts with her family and everyone who knew her.
I’ve been busy this last few days delivering my election leaflets ahead of postal votes arriving next week. Here’s the leaflet from when I first got elected in 2003 vs 2021
‘Over 1 million vaccines to the people of Leeds.’ Penny McSorley, director of nursing for the vaccination programme, celebrates the efforts of
#TeamLeeds
.
good day in selby with loads of great labour activists and good luck for the right result
@Mather_Keir
@SelbyAinstyLab
thanks to all the
@Leeds_Labour
people who have helped out today and during the campaign
brilliant news!
@TracyBrabin
with 5 labour councils West Yorkshire are delivering change to the county and this result is a massive endorsement for our work on transport, jobs & housing. 🌹
Quick ‘northern powerhouse’ / ‘levelling up’ bulletin. In 2011 the Conservative Government announced a number of transport schemes inc. one in London and Trans Pennine electrification up here. Guess which one hasn’t happened and which one will start running this month?
Marcelo Bielsa made us Leeds fans and the whole city love the football club as he brought us back to the Premier League. Sad that the virus meant we couldn’t celebrate promotion fully. Left a legacy of so many memories from the last 3 years that will last forever
