Thinking about
@uOttawa
's Lebanese students who came across this obscene post yesterday.
Are these the kind of statements you had in mind when you appointed a special advisor on antisemitism
@recteurUOpres
?
Today’s targeting of Hezbollah operatives was brilliant. It struck a major blow against a terror group that has fired thousands of rockets against civilians all while the useless UN mission in Lebanon stands by. There is a price to pay
#Hezbollah
#FAFO
.
@erinotoole
So under an Erin O'Toole government, Canadians would need a criminal record check to determine whether they qualify for access to a vaccine at this stage in the roll out?
Bomb Gaza into rubble and kill scores of kids. Tragic, but perfect acceptable.
Interrupting business as usual at malls ahead of Christmas. Horrific, how could protestors possibly do this to children?
Who has no moral compass again? Some have lost the plot.
1/4 In the coming days, people who've been dehumanized & have dehumanized others are going to be rounded-up by the cops in
#ottcity
. There are children who may be separated from their parents right in front of their eyes or from afar by jail walls. Human beings may die.
1/2
#ottcity
is it property tax time already? Question to my councillor
@RiverWardRiley
& mayor
@JimWatsonOttawa
. Is there a way for me to redirect my household's tax contribution earmarked for the Ottawa police to initiatives that actually enhance community well-being & safety?
1/ Since
@uOttawa
's admin didn't widely consult or even bother notifying students, staff and profs about the decision to divest from & boycott
@FierteCapPride
in
#OttCity
, at some point
@recteurUOpres
& co. will need to answer some basic questions like...
2/4 This isn't a time for popcorn, champagne popping & celebration. This isn't a time for
#CarceralEnjoyments
. This is a time where we're bearing witness to harm in response to harm and we need to summon our better angels to resist our worst instincts.
Exactly two months until "
#HowToAbolishPrisons
" is published by
@haymarketbooks
April 9th.
While nervous about what readers will think these blurbs from great abolitionist thinkers & organizers (see back cover) put my mind somewhat at ease -
#AltText
in 🧵. Big thanks to them.
BREAKING:
Ontario’s Superior Court of Justice rules in favour of UofT. Students protesting a genocide must end camp by 6 pm tomorrow or face police violence.
The UofT administration has been granted the
immoral license to unleash police violence
against its own community. 🧵
3/4 It's critical that even in the most challenging times that we continue to imagine, strive for & try to build a future where solidarity is premised on equity, inclusion, collective responsibility, real safety, joy & liberation for all, not othering.
1/3 For comrades Rachel Herzing & I interviewed and/or organized with since we began working on "How to Abolish Prisons: Lessons from the Movement" in 2016, you know it's been a long road.
Excited to report that
@haymarketbooks
is putting the book out into the world this April!
To criminology students & others aspiring to be police officers to "help people & prevent violence" ask yourselves: Will policing allow me to reach these goals? If I'm a cop will I enact violence on people seeking access to basic necessities 4 all? The answers are all around us.
4/ How is it that
@uOttawa
's admin chose 2 divest from & boycott Pride in
#OttCity
while not choosing 2 divest from & boycott the genocide of Palestinians? History will not be kind to those who yield their institutional power so irresponsibly in the face of horror.
@OPALamothe
@OPApresident
You do realize that cops investigate, arrest, charge & detain people for a living? That’s exclusion work. Some of those people cops criminalize are parents of school kids. Some kids are criminalized themselves. They may not see police classroom visits as an educative experience.
1/2 OPS & their partners dropped the ball by allowing a protest organized by groups seeking a federal govt coup to enter the parliamentary precinct w/ transport trucks, etc. Then they allowed an occupation. Now they're seeking to be rewarded for their own inaction & incompetence.
1/2 Almost a decade in the making... now
#HowToAbolishPrisons

@haymarketbooks
is in my hands & hopefully it'll also be in yours on April 9th!

2/ How does
@uOttawa
's decision to divest from & boycott
@FierteCapPride
foster "a space of respect and inclusion for all"?
How does Pride
#OttCity
's "Statement in Solidarity with Palestine" "not align with the University's broader mission and values"?
1/2 Full Professor. Not bad for a scholar who only got into one PhD program in 2006 with an abolitionist research proposal despite having a near-perfect GPA in my master's (thanks to
@AaronWDoyle
taking a chance on me). Yes, I still have a bit of a chip on my shoulder ;-)
3/ How is it acceptable 4 an academic institution like
@uOttawa
2 make claims without explication & substantiation (preferably citing evidence)? This, after all, is what we expect students & researchers in our community 2 do, yet our admin simply make declarations from upon high.
Devasting news. I just met with Sarah a few days ago to discuss her progress on her PhD thesis and we ironed out a plan for her to finish, as well as plans for collaboration this spring. There's been so much loss in the community in recent years. Rest in power Sarah.
1/9 Joint statement by
@CPEPgroup

@jpp1988
&
@trackinjustice
As collaborators of Sarah Speight (PhD Candidate, Geography, University of Ottawa), it is with deep regret that we inform the community that she passed away last weekend.
@Sflecce
The teachable moment you insist on is that no matter the risks to your health (e.g. vision loss), capitalism comes 1st. Show-up to work everyone. Your sacrifice is needed.
As an aside, aren't you having issues recruiting & retaining teachers? Wonder why? Great employer you are.
@MacLeodLisa
Did you even read
@SarahJama
's statement? Any fair reading would see her statement as a call for peace, to finally deal with longstanding issues at the root of decades of conflict, as well as concern for "all those impacted".
@ColinDMello
1/2 Creating a "pipeline" for more police officers when (a) we know $1 invested in violence prevention saves $7 on cops, courts, cages and victims services after victimization occurs and (b) when policing often harms people pushed to the margins is bad idea.
Time for editing the final proof & getting blurbs for "How to Abolish Prisons: Lessons from the Movement" by Rachel Herzing and I

1/2 Let's be fiscally conservative for a moment. Exercise + recreation makes for healthier people & helps prevent illnesses. Healthier people draw less on healthcare resources, thus reducing the costs to govt. We need more access to exercise + recreation in prisons, not less.
These guys can't even find 0.12% out of a $400 million police budget to divert mental health calls in a meaningful way.

@OCDSB
1/2 In fairness Premier, it appears that the
@OCDSB
has made accommodations to allow police officers to speak as “community helpers” in schools (just without uniforms and cruisers in tow) even though many children and youth are demanding that cops get out and stay out of schools.
You can't urge people 2 move on when those who caused harm haven't apologized, provided meaningful restitution 2 those their actions impacted & assurances they'll alter their behaviour 2 ensure the safety of others. You've been a proponent of restorative justice. You know better.
How many criminalized people imprisoned at the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre before the siege could’ve instead been safely released on their own recognizance by OPS or via bail releases by justices of the peace but weren’t? What would explain the differential treatment?
Of those arrested, 103 were charged. The main charges are mischief and obstruct.
89 of them have been released with conditions that include a boundary they are not allowed to attend.
The others have been released unconditionally.
Thou shalt not encourage current and former students or anyone else for that matter to pursue careers that will surely result in harm to themselves and others.
@PCPressOffice
If your party and govt are actually interested in enhancing community well-being and safety, here are a few ideas of where you could allocate $22 million a year to instead of free cop academy training. It's not too late to change your minds.
1/6 What could $22 million going towards free tuition for 480 police recruits a year go towards that would actually enhance community well-being and safety? Here are a few ideas
#IfWeHad22MillionDollars

In the wake of Umar Zameer's acquittal in the death of Const. Northrup how will police associations & chiefs spin the outcome? Often the best predictor of future behaviour is past behaviour. Here are 2 resources showing why we should be skeptical of copaganda+police stenography🧵
Quick facts. Being imprisoned doesn't erase your age, medical issues and/or vulnerability associated w/ being caged in a congregate setting. Imprisoned people (incl. elderly) don't have super powers that make them immune to any of this.

Did I hear this right? Did
@OPSChiefSloly
say that if his force's 2021 budget got cut by $1.2M out of a budget of well over $300M that he'd have to make cuts to things like de-escalation training and anti-racism initiatives? No cuts to be had for police violence work apparently
@glen_mcgregor
3/ If Pat King gets bail in the name of his health and public health after everything he has said about
#COVID19
, the first question that should be asked is who's being caged at the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre right now that should be getting bail, but isn't and why?
@CuriePeach
I cheered and then asked myself wtf am I doing. What is this accomplishing? Is this consistent with what I believe? What are the ramifications for the future? Not wagging a finger at anyone. Just raising implications of our collective reactions to this moment of great harm.

News release says Ontario Police College currently runs 3 cohorts per year of 480 officers through this $15,450 course, so my math says that’s $22 million/yr in free tuition. News release also says in 2024 it will expand to 4 cohorts/yr of 550 officers each, so that’s $34 M/yr.
@geniebouchard
What does it say about the state of healthcare in our country when a human being needs to hawk a cherished possession or require a gift from a wealthier person to be able to acquire the means to hear to their fullest potential? Common Canada. Demand better.

Thinking of those that, unlike Mr. Zameer, are held in pretrial detention in

How about stopping the public-private-partnership gravy train at

It's been said before & bears repeating again: problematizing over-representation implies there can be an appropriate level of representation. So what would be an 'appropriate' level of criminalization & incarceration of BIPOC by our colonial & racist punitive injustice system?

1/3 If you could borrow $1.2 billion over 30 years 2 enhance community well-being & safety in your region, would you blow it on designing, building, financing & maintaining a prison at the rate of $40M/year, $109,589/day, $4,566/hour, $76/minute, $1.30/second like
@fordnation
is?
