Today 4 billion people will hear 1 Corinthians 15, John 14, Psalms 23 & 43, and Romans 8. And they’ll see an Emperor, Kings, Queens & Presidents sing of casting their crowns before the Lord Jesus, lost in wonder, love & praise. Praying the Lord will work powerfully by His Word.
‘“Once I smoked, now I don’t. Once I drank beer, now I don’t.” Thank God you don’t, brother. It’s healthier not to. But if that’s your concept of Christianity, you haven’t even seen the door of the outer chambers, let alone the holy of holies.’
—A. W. Tozer
"It is not the task of Christianity to provide easy answers to every question ... God is not so much the object of our knowledge as the cause of our wonder."
(Kallistos Ware)
Apparently, a pastor from one of the states in Nigeria, listened to the space and was convicted to start baptizing his members henceforth.
God be praised.
Those are the most important words we’ll ever hear from a Prime Minister: “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”
(John 14:6)
If I ever need a new cause to take up in life, it’ll be to get bookshops and publishers to stop putting stickers on the front cover of books — they nearly never come off! (At least not without doing some irreparable damage along the way.)
🧵When the state atheism of the Albanian Communist regime came to an end in 1991, there were only 13 or 16 Evangelical Christians left alive in the entire country. 1/5
‘If I were to define what for me makes up the core Pentecostal identity, it is the lived conviction that everything, absolutely everything, in the scriptures is livable. Not just true, but livable. Not just an idea or a cause, but livable in real life.’
—Eugene Peterson
There is nothing chaotic in this video. There is nothing contrary to Scripture. The Lord can heal—there is no reason for anyone who has a high view of Scripture to doubt that He can. Surely we’d be better off praying for healing than doubting anyone who claims healing!
Got invited along to church by a student this morning. A 1600 year old liturgy in a Norman church with a 700 year old oak hammerbeam roof and no electricity, lit entirely by candlelight. And one of the best sermons I’ve heard in a good while.
Baptism is very important. And teaching on baptism is important so that we understand. So here are some videos (from a Pentecostal/credobaptist perspective) of teaching on the sacrament of baptism in water in the name of the Triune God.
Baptism
“Your arrest is necessary … to protect vulnerable people.”
Why do vulnerable people need protection from potential silent prayer to the Lord who defends the weak?
Visited a friend's church this morning. Expository preaching. We prayed, read the Bible, sang two Psalms and a few hymns to a simple piano accompaniment. No gimmicks. And guess what — it was full of people in their 20s and 30s worshipping Jesus.
The most spectacular image of the day: an earthly monarch stripped of his royal robes to kneel humbly alone before the King of Kings to receive the grace of the Holy Spirit, by which alone he can govern, live, and come at last to the heavenly Kingdom.
Her Majesty in a face-mask in an empty Westminster Abbey at the tomb of the Unknown Warrior is a somehow startling image, no matter how used we’ve gotten to doing things differently this year.
‘If I say anything which is undoubtedly contradictory to Holy Scripture, it is wrong; and, if I become aware of such a contradiction, I do not wish to hold to that opinion.’
—Anselm, Archbishop of Canterbury (1093-1109)
A great thing about being at the Lausanne Congress is the constant reminder that the things that impress us in the Western English-speaking church mean very little in most of the world.
Global South Pastor: Where do you teach?
Academic: Oxford.
GSP: Ox-Ford? Where is that??
‘The Lord’s Supper is the most spiritual and sweetest ordinance that ever was instituted ... In prayer we draw nigh to God; in the sacrament, we become one with him. In prayer, we look up to Christ; in the sacrament, by faith, we touch him.’
—Thomas Watson
No, they don’t.
This is nonsense and the person claiming here on Twitter that this is what Charismatics think “as a rule” clearly knows very little about actual Charismatic or Pentecostal theology (despite his large following).
Interesting
#newday23
observation: When the preacher last night asked everyone to fill in the blank, “Jesus said: I will build my _____,” most young people around me said the answer was “life.”
Our songs shape our teens’ theology more than our sermons. Choose them well.
“The weakness of Pentecostalism becomes apparent when Pentecostals try to routinise the extraordinary, that is, make it a regular part of day-to-day living.”
(Simon Chan, a Pentecostal)
Today is the beginning of something new as Cornelly Apostolic Church and Brackla Tabernacle join for worship in Cornelly Church’s new venue at our new time. Praying for what the Lord is going to do in the village.
If you’re considering spending $29,800 on a Bible cruise, why not prayerfully consider forgoing the cruise & blessing one of the many churches in the UK or many other countries for whom that’s more than their annual budget. Or a student who can’t afford to train for the ministry.
This Lifeway “experience the Bible coming to life” cruise is a bargain at just $29,800 per person
(There are cheaper options, but this is still obscene)
An essential Pentecostal principle:
‘The doctrine accompanying the supernatural should be rigorously tested by the Word of God at every point.’
—Donald Gee
An organisation which I respected today sent me this. I immediately unsubscribed from their emails.
In the last few weeks I have seen ridiculous amounts of inaccuracies (to view it in the best possible light) about Pentecostals & Charismatics stemming from this.
Lord, have mercy!
This is the effect on societal morality within only 6 years of the first legalisation of euthanasia in Canada.
Legalising euthanasia does not legalise a few rare cases; it transforms society (in a terrifying direction).
New Canadian survey on attitudes to euthanasia. 27% think people should have access to euthanasia because of poverty (41% among the 18-34). 28% for homelessness, 43% for mental illness, and 50% for being disabled (60% among the 18-34).
"What makes a Christian a Christian is repentance, and therefore the Christian leader ... [has] to be leading in repentance... So if we're not the first to repent, I'm not sure to what extent we can legitimately say our leadership is Christian."
@SamAllberry
Today, the Light shines as Christ’s people gather — in His Word, at His Table, in our witness and our worship.
The Lord is with us!
The Light of the World shines among us!

May the Lord grant the Archbishop grace, wisdom, and boldness in the Holy Spirit to speak clearly, powerfully, fearlessly and faithfully the comfort, hope and salvation found only in Jesus Christ our Lord, who died for our sins and rose for us on the third day.
Letham calls Pentecostalism “a movement that has no discernible distinctive theology and is based not on the textuality of the Bible but rather in experience [which] cannot ... be judged to be in harmony with the biblical gospel.”
That does NOT describe classical Pentecostalism!
If you’ve read the review of Letham’s new book on the Holy Spirit in the latest issue of Foundations (
@affinitytalks
) & want a completely different perspective on Pentecostalism (one that *is* Evangelical & doctrinal), my new book might be a good antidote.
Jesus was crowned with our curse so that we could be crowned with His blessing.
Jesus was robed in dishonour so that we could be robed with His righteousness.
I don’t want to give this person more attention by quote tweeting, but this is:
a) explicitly contrary to scripture which explicitly calls singleness a gift, just like marriage (1 Cor. 7:7),
&
b) just another example of the horrible way single people are constantly treated 🤦🏻♂️
Redrafting something on celibacy — for Pentecostals. Very few tasks in theological writing make me nervous, but I have been a celibate Pentecostal pastor long enough that this is very definitely one of them. Eeek.
This bit is buried somewhere in my book, but I felt I should share it a bit more widely — about how the Lord in His kindness used the Lord’s Supper in my life in the midst of depression.
As it's Charles Wesley's birthday, and as I've recently discovered that approximately *none* of my students know any of his hymns (in a theological college of a tradition that was once steeped in his lyrics), I thought a few of his greatest hits might be in order:
Police came to one of our churches in Sri Lanka today to urge people to leave because of the attacks. No one left. Instead they stayed to ordain a pastor & some elders & baptise 10 new Christians for Easter.
They’ve been facing persecution & expect more & ask for prayer.
Pastor Simon Taylor (AO link with Sri Lanka) spoke with Ps Shehan Fernando this morning (he will take over from Ps Amal as national leader later this year) concerning the attacks on churches...
The Lord is good! Today I was praying for a big need. When I’d prayed everything I could possibly pray about it and was done praying, I felt I had to keep going and pray until a specific time. So I did. And at exactly that time—to the very minute—an email arrived with the answer.
Oooh! Look what’s coming in the summer!
(Here’s a sneak peak at the cover and the release date.)
The Lord's Supper: Our Promised Place of Intimacy and Transformation with Jesus
Slowly, but surely, God is at work by His Gospel in a country which only a few decades ago tried to eliminate religion. Christianity was brought here by the apostle Paul (Rom. 15:19) & has known times of flourishing & times of persecution ever since. Pray for its flourishing. 5/5
‘To spend my whole life in prayer— nothing’s more beautiful … To make my whole life an offering of worship to God, that’s the desire that took hold of me at 11 years old and that still lives in me today.’
—Sr Fabienne

John Webster on what he’d do if he were just starting out in theology:
“What I didn't get round to doing when I set out: lots of exegesis, lots of historical theology, mastering the big texts of the traditions of the church.”
Yes, there are bad things which need to be corrected in parts of the Pentecostal/Charismatic world. But that’s true of every tradition. Don’t take the worst examples to represent the actual theology. There are plenty of Pentecostal voices seeking to correct the bad examples too.

Well, that’s the first time we’ve had to say “please take a seat, if you’re able”, because we added every chair in the building & still didn’t have enough for everyone who came to the Good Friday Breaking of Bread.
Good to be with Christ’s people to give thanks for the Cross.

Spent last night making the simplest flat-pack stools so that now, for the first time in my adult life, I have a permanent place to sit for breakfast. As a child I’d come downstairs in the morning to find dad sitting at the breakfast table with his Bible; now I can be like him.
One of the people I baptised today got saved as he watched our last baptisms in February. Baptism isn’t only a means of grace to the one getting baptised — the Lord also uses baptism to speak to those who witness it.
The man who sparked off the Oneness heresy never believed Oneness teaching. He was a devout Trinitarian all his life. But he made an unwise comment when preaching at a conference and now there are 17 million Oneness Pentecostals.
Pastors need to choose their words carefully.
It’s a year since this came out. I hope it’s helped lift some eyes to the Lord since then and that it continues to encourage people to come expectantly to the Lord’s Table to meet with the Saviour.
So, let me suggest a few reasons you might like to consider reading it… 🧵

It’s launch day for the first issue of

Struck already after one evening back in Belgium by how much and how normally Christians here talk about the Lord. Not breakthroughs, blessings, miracles or ‘God-moments’, but the Lord.
Ending the night in tears. Heartbreaking stories of persecution. (I can’t say more.)
We in the West have so much to learn about faithfulness & wholehearted discipleship from our suffering brothers & sisters who live with danger & persecution.
The Lord is faithful.
#L4Congress
Week 17 of our theology course at church tonight. Tonight’s theme — The Lord’s Supper. (Someone might have to rescue the congregation at the end of the night and make me stop speaking, seeing as it’s a subject on which I notoriously have so little to say 😉😂)
“Just keep reading the Bible. You may not remember everything, but the Word is flowing into your spirit. And as it does, it is giving you abiding strength and sustenance as you simply obey and read.”
(Jack Hayford)
Since arriving in town, I have waited until I saw

to have pork pie.
In related news, I am really thankful to the Lord for such gospel unity here in Bridgend.
Academic life consists of constantly finding fascinating books that you absolutely have to read in the footnotes of other books, only to look them up and discover they cost over £100.
(This is basically a daily occurrence.)
‘God crown you with a crown of glory and righteousness, that having a right faith and manifold fruit of good works, you may obtain the crown of an everlasting kingdom by the gift of him whose kingdom endureth forever. Amen.’

It’s a huge privilege to be here with representatives from more than 200 countries at

—which Michael Oh described tonight as “the largest and most globally representative gathering of evangelical leaders ever.” May the Lord use it to bless many who don’t yet know Him.
Fortunately I had just ordered churros when they announced that air traffic control was down and all the flights grounded, so at least I’ll have those to distract me from being stuck in Birmingham Airport.
In today’s GTY broadcast, John MacArthur places trauma, anxiety, anorexia and schizophrenia in the category of “blasphemy” [from 18:26].
This is not grace and it’s not biblical.
If you’re a Christian, it’s 100% not wrong to seek help from medical professionals for any of these.

Seattle — 23%
Boston — 9%
NYC — 9%
Northern Ireland — 20%

What a joy to teach on the person and work of Christ for my final lectures! And a blessing to have a student from my first ever lecture here in my last lecture here too.
