Men’s tennis just feels like it’s in a bit of a dire state. Only one guy anywhere close to challenging a 36yo. That matchup is amazing, but if you don’t get Alcaraz-Djokovic you’ve got nothing else to really look forward to it feels like. Just been unbelievably bored 3/4 slams.

If Alcaraz can play that poorly and win a grand slam it’s safe to say he’s going to start racking them up pretty quickly. A key part of top players racking up big numbers is that ability to win when not at their best, able to peak at the right times to get over the line.

I’m speechless. What a match. What an unbelievable match. Match of the year. One of the best WTA matches ever surely? Best I’ve ever seen. Two players bringing their absolute best, raising their game again and again as the tension grew and it got tight. Just incredible.

The physical intensity of modern tennis is in no way comparable to Navratilova’s era. But even if it was, why shouldn’t she complain? I hate this mentality of “I had it bad and survived so you should too.” Things can improve! We shouldn’t still have players exhausted like this!

Interesting that both Zverev and Medvedev would have lost in Round 2 were the mens side best of 3 (Medvedev in straight sets, Zverev in 3). Any complaints of inconsistency on the WTA side has to factor in the difference in formats. Would Swiatek or Rybakina be out in Bo5?

The most important thing to remember with the Zverev court case in terms of tennis is that he should not have been playing all this time. The ATP do not have a domestic abuse policy in place and it’s been what, 3 years since allegations of violence came out? And still nothing…

I usually love the clay season, but I’ve really hated Madrid and Rome this year. All the bloated masters problems we’ve had already, plus the night sessions, rain delays and shafting of the WTA. They need to figure out their scheduling, but knowing tennis nothing will change.

That’s one of the best wins of Iga’s career. Don’t care it’s round 2. Don’t care if she does nothing else this tournament. The grit, the determination, the raising of her game when it looked certain she was on the brink of defeat. The way she went into lockdown…I’m so proud ❤️

I think Pegula’s slam issue is that she doesn’t treat them any differently to the tour. She enters both doubles draws, she’s said she just treats it as any other match. She doesn’t peak at slams or round into form as it goes on. She just plays at her standard level throughout.

To be honest I think I rate this season from Iga higher than 2022 in many ways. On paper 2022 is better: 2 slams+ AO SF, more 1000s, The Streak. But this year has had genuine rivals, greater consistency overall and title defences which is so hard to do. She’s been pushed more.

Absolutely awesome to have Swiatek-Sabalenka again in the final. Not sure it’ll be quite as good as Madrid (it’s hard to live up to, especially factoring in fatigue and conditions) but awesome to see this rivalry play out consistently. The WTA is in such a good place rn!!

1) 20 year olds do not tend to have amazing fitness, that physicality takes time to build up. That’s part of why young prodigies are rare.
2) Older players don’t lack good in-match fitness for the most part, it’s more about recovery that’s harder.

I think that set is an example of how matchups work at the absolute elite level. This is a bad matchup for Iga, but she’s still the world no.1 and can pull out some spectacular tennis and clutch performances when required. Bad matchups can be overcome by just being rly good.

Azarenka-Rybakina was one of those matches where once the dust settles, I take a very deep breath and just think “God, I love the WTA Tour”. Such a crazy, incredible match. When Azarenka broke back in the decider I automatically threw my arms above my head, jaw-dropped. Amazing.

What a match. What an incredible, incredible match. I don’t quite know how Iga won it, what a turnaround. Muchova played brilliantly today- absolutely brilliantly, gave Iga so much trouble and pushed her so much. She could easily have won it and deserved it. But…wow. Iga.

I think one thing that can easily be forgotten today: 3-peats are extremely rare. Managing to win a slam 3 times in a row is an insane feat that requires consistency year on year. For Iga to achieve that with such dominance, such unwavering certainty she’d do it, is mind boggling

I do find it odd how the media reaction to the CAS ruling has been to immediately side with CAS, shunning the ITIA as some fraudulent institution. We have a 100+ page long report with extremely detailed reasoning from the ITIA. We have nothing from CAS beyond “we believed Halep”.
David Walsh explains why the CAS decision in the Halep case is simply absurd. Reminder: As the ITIA stated im their decision Halep would have needed to ingest 5,000 times the recommended daily dose of the supplement to produce the concentration of roxadustat found in her sample.

I feel like Iga’s been pushed a lot more this week in Rome than she ever was in Madrid, and yet she’s not dropped a set en route to the final and had one set go the full 12 games. So impressive how she’s dug in when being pushed, but also shows how hard it is to beat her in Rome.

Watching Iga on grass right now makes me think 2022 Wimbledon was an anomaly more than anything else. Looks so much more comfortable hitting and moving on the surface now. Mentally (and physically) in a position she can really learn and adapt whereas last year it was just survive

Swiatek-Raducanu: great match to watch! Really competitive high intensity stuff. Emma played great and matched Iga’s level (albeit not peak Iga) and intensity almost throughout. Iga rolled through the gears in the tiebreak, but Emma should be rly proud of the test she was under!

No sign that she was massively struggling but she knows how she feels, and it must be scary not fully knowing what’s happened.
