CASTRO THEATRE WIN!
SF’s Historic Preservation Commission and Planning Commission have APPROVED
@apeconcerts
’ requests to restore and revitalize the
@Castro_Theatre
!
Aaron Peskin is the leading anti-housing voice at City Hall, pushing a conservative housing status quo that pushes people out.
Peskin’s latest: Down-zoning his district — making it harder for SF to meet its housing goals.
Stopping new homes isn’t progressive. Quite the opposite
I love BART so much, but tragedies like this is why so many folks do not. Safety on public transit is a bare-minimum requirement. I’m running for BART to ensure it’s safe.
A 74-year-old woman was pushed into a moving BART train at Powell Street station and killed on Monday night, BART Police said. Officers arrested a homeless man on the platform on suspicion of murder.
Oakland, 1/2 the pop of SF, builds 2x as many homes (that’s a 4:1 ratio per capita).
SF should be a leader in the Bay Area. But our own “leaders” are determined to make us followers.
Oakland saw double the population growth of San Francisco's last year. It pokes more holes into that largely uninformed claim by that developer in Chron yesterday that the last five years of stagnant and declining rents downtown were due to remote work
The entire frame of “moderate vs progressive”—one that the Chron continues to flog—is outdated w/r/t SF politics. Blocking housing and algebra for 8th graders is not progressive.
@DeanPreston
I REALLY don’t understand this! The majority of orgs & Castro residents don’t support this. And you offered this amendment in a neighborhood you don’t even represent, an affront to the Historic Preservation Commission’s recommendation AND our supervisor. Not a good look.
NERT CERTIFIED!! 🎓 Thank you SF Fire Dept (
@sffdpio
) for the great program! ❤️🔥 Excited to be a member of SF’s Neighborhood Emergency Response Team. Here’s to all you disasters here in SF. 🏳️🌈 I’m comin’ for ya! 🧑🚒😜🔥🚒🧯

🍿UPDATE: Castro Theatre🍿
The SF Board of Sups voted to landmark the interior (yay!) AND to scrap the “poison pill” amendment to add seats to the designation. HUGE WIN!!
Every time folks say "no" to something new in
#theCastro
, they aren't protecting it, they are doubling down on our neighborhood's longterm trajectory: store closures, housing unaffordability, loss of tourism, de-queering. "THE STATUS QUO IS NOT NEUTRAL"
My remarks 2 the Planning & Historic Preservation Commissions:
Hello Commissioners. Thank you for your service. My name is Joe Sangirardi & I’m a proud gay queer man & Castro resident. Today, we’re discussing the future of the Castro Theatre & our beloved Castro neighborhood.
modern planning relegates retail and businesses to loud, polluted and dangerous streets disguised as "access to transit". but really, nobody in the neighborhood wants to shop there. we should go back to how we allowed cities to grow before urban design
BIG win! This bill instructs the State Fire Marshall to study the safety of single-stair case buildings (like most historic 4-12 plexes in SF, & around the world) and develop standards for them.
These sorts of buildings contribute MASSIVELY to the quality of city living. 🏢🏫🏬
SF Supes argued that parking meter increases are regressive, knowing
@SFMTA_Muni
would instead have to increase transit fares to protect bus service for those who need it the most.
Tomorrow the SFMTA Board will likely vote to support a 14% fare increase for about 90% of riders over the next two-year budget cycle. The primary cause? The Board of Supervisors blocked implementation of SFMTA's extended parking meter hours in 2023. A brief history 🧵.
Following the event with President Joe Biden on the Embarcadero, Mayor London Breed ventured to the Castro. “People are excited about this. APEC is epic. It’s exciting for San Francisco. An opportunity the City to shine on a world stage.”
In SF you’re a “developer shill” if you want more housing, even w/ union work. Meanwhile the UK’a 1st Labour Gov’t in 10+ years is doing what?!
“Local residents to lose power to block new housing as Starmer vows to 'get rid of brakes on planning system’”
.
BAM! Proud to be endorsed by
@SFyimby
! Our movement is strong & growing. It’s time to build a ton of housing EVERYWHERE to make SF & CA affordable for EVERYONE. 🥑🙏🏼💥
Our development director
@JoeSangirardi
, gay resident in the Castro and local neighborhood activist, explains how the affordability crisis impacts queer communities. Watch and follow us on TikTok!
Some ppl shit-posted pics of me on FB b/c I fought for the future of the
@Castro_Theatre
. And I’m just like…they could have at least chosen pics where I don’t look like I clearly love what I’m doing. Que sera!
With a straight face:
1️⃣ They claimed more housing will lower property values & make the neighborhood unaffordable. 🤔
2️⃣ They applauded new “affordable housing” but don’t want Section 8 housing for seniors. 🫠
3️⃣ They applauded Ronald Reagan😐
Hello San Francisco. I'm attending a District 7 Town Hall hosted by Neighborhoods. The subject: upzoning impacts of the impending rezoning, a component of the city's housing element.
Toured

! Excited to make SF the best version of itself.
@SFDemsForChange
It’s official! I am honored to have been sworn in to the SF DCCC today alongside a strong group of delegates.
SF made clear it wants change in the Democratic Party, so we’re collaborating on resolutions supporting housing, labor, and education.
Excited for the work ahead!
I’m running for BART in Nov. to earn back the trust of voters & pass a ballot measure in 2026 to save
@SFBART
.
@Scott_Wiener
is leading the way & I’m deeply proud to have his endorsement. SB 1031 might be dead this leg session, but we’ll be back in 2025!
Just perusing US housing stats late @ night & a gentle reminder…

New large-scale developments in San Francisco (Stonestown, Treasure Island, Hunter's Point) should get to forgo SF's crazy wide street mandates.
Narrow streets make for beautiful, interesting, walkable neighborhoods with good land use.
Lisbon, Portugal 🇵🇹
The beautiful trams of the Alfama district in Lisbon runs on narrow cobblestone streets surrounded by historic architecture and highlights the timelessness of the area.
This November, California will vote on the “Justice For Renters Act.” It changes state law that limits new rent control measures.
🤔 Sounds good, right?
😡 NOPE
Wealthy white cities will intentionally mandate rent controls that make new affordable housing impossible to build.
LA landlord Michael Weinstein has been investigated for mistreating low-income tenants. He can’t be trusted on housing. That’s why we oppose his “Justice For Renters Act,” which will give NIMBY cities like Beverly Hills unchecked power to block new homes.
This was me! We did step up,
@AaronPeskin
, and we kindly ask you to NOT vote for this amendment next week at the final vote. I’m happy to provide you the full list of orgs who oppose including seats in the historic landmark designation. DM me! 🙏🏼❤️
Commenter says
@AaronPeskin
issued a challenge two weeks ago for the community to offer feedback, and many parts of the community have stepped to do that. (He doesn't suppport the fixed seats.)
We’re OUT today to support
@apeconcerts
’ plans for the
@Castro_Theatre
! Thank you to everyone who showed up and showed out to SAVE OUR NEIGHBORHOOD!
❤️💛❤️💙❤️
There’s a lot of nuance, new conditions proposed and accepted, and permits left in this process, but this is THE huge win for the Castro neighborhood.
THANK YOU to everyone who showed up, showers out, posted, called, and advocated. Today is a bright day in the Castro!
What kind of YIMBY am I? 🏬🏘️🏢🏡
I am “I moved to the most iconic LGBTQ neighborhood in the world & young queer folks can no longer afford to move here, which will kill the Castro and destroy its legacy.” 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️
What type of YIMBY are you?
I’m “grew up poor, saw my family and friends struggle with housing costs their entire lives, studied the research extensively, and realized that fighting for working class people meant fighting for housing”
A fun SF thought experiment: would a dozen gay bars have been allowed to open in the working class Irish-American neighborhood of Eureka Valley (now known as the Castro) if there had been a Robust Community Outreach Process for liquor licenses in the 1960s and 70s?
We are at a critical moment in our nation's history.
We have two paths ahead of us: Democratic progress, or Trumpian regression.
It's time for the Democratic Party to consider alternatives, if President Biden decides to not continue as the nominee.
Too much is at stake.
Happy Friday!
Suggested weekend activity: Listen to today’s

episode on Ruth Asawa’s whimsical San Francisco Fountain. (It turns 50 on Valentine’s Day!)
Then visit the fountain and see how many SF landmarks you can spot depicted in it.

State of the City w/ Mayor
@LondonBreed
:
✅ “We’re turning San Francisco from a city of NO to a city that says YES to housing.”
✅ “Building homes & building treatment beds IS progressive.”
“BART…has been replacing its
…cars...It has been accomplishing this within a reasonable time frame…much faster than we’ve come to expect from CA infrastructure projects. & unlike most other CA infra. projects, [BART] has come in way under budget!”
If you want to build better roads and trains, don't outsource the work to consultants.
If you want to provide services to poor people and minorities, don't outsource the work to nonprofits.
State capacity. It works, folks.
“If you could wave a magic wand to fix one thing in San Francisco, what would it be?”
MAYOR
@LondonBreed
: I would wave my magic wand so we’d have 100,000 more homes in San Francisco!
With 20k+ more ballots counted today, I’m holding strong at

! Here are the 14 top vote getters as of today at 4pm for the Assembly District 17 leadership for the

@SFDemsForChange
is looking good! 💪🏼
SF is in a MASSIVE housing crisis & our elected officials are more interested in virtue signaling than actually helping people. They’re “for” affordable housing, but fight it. They “support” affordable units, but no project is ever good enough.

THIS is the

I voted for. THIS is the President many of us worked so hard to elect. And THIS is a truly American president for ALL.

I am proud of my academic & professional achievements, and to have studied under some of the leading neuroscientists of the country.
But I’m disappointed that SF politics have devolved into smear campaigns to distract us from the issues.
So let's get into the facts. 🧵
The influx of new rich people to San Francisco over the past 15 years did not have to displace the poor and middle class. That was a policy choice we made by refusing to allow ~any new housing construction outside of a few neighborhoods.
