Israel first said it lethally targeted a car carrying journalists in Gaza because there was a terrorist in the car. Now it says that the use by a journalist of a drone made it "look like" they were terrorists. Targeting of civilians is illegal. 1/2
Free speech does not mean freedom from consequences of speech. This is true. However, if the consequences of speaking lawfully are that you or your family face threats, assault, jail, or loss of income - whether government or mob-sanctioned - then you don't have free speech.
As a journalist, one of the first rules we were taught was never, ever to alter anyone’s quotes. It’s dishonest. And disempowering. If you don’t like the words someone uses, don’t use them. Or find your own. Don’t change theirs.

We
@IndexCensorship
are seriously concerned about apparent rise in police intervention on issues of legal speech in UK, particularly apparent confusion between speech that social media platforms might choose to outlaw under their terms of service and legally permissible speech.
"We’re living through the most misogynistic period I’ve experienced. Everywhere, women are being told to shut up and sit down, or else." This is so true of social media, esp.
@Twitter
. It ultimately means women are bullied out of a role in the political decisions that impact them
"A dark day for freedom of the press" indeed.

The judgment in Harry Miller judicial review is really important for freedom of expression in UK and how police treat online communications when considering if they amount to ‘hate’. Judge repeats notion that freedom to speak only inoffensively not worth having.

#MayaAppeal
was the last thing I did as CEO there. Today Aileen McColgan QC set out-based on the protections that exist in law for freedom of expression- why the court's original decision was wrong.
Trans rights are human rights. Women’s rights are human rights. And freedom of expression is a human right. If we don’t protect freedom of speech, we can’t advocate for any of these other rights. Freedom of speech for all is essential if we are to protect *everybody’s* rights.
How
@AmnestyIreland
rejects equal rights for all, and why I agree with
@iseult
White that
@amnesty
should support freedom of expression and representation for all
I campaign for everyone's right to speak freely. I have defended those with whom I agree and those whose views I abhor. What I see over and over again is that the voices that are most censored, most censured, most talked over and which receive the most abuse - are those of women.
And - as I have said before - the fact that people will read this tweet as applying to one particular side or another tells you everything you need to know about why we need to defend it for the views we disagree with as much as those we do.
People are being hounded out of jobs, losing freelance opportunities in the arts, bullied into silence in workplaces over a topic that the UK government itself madea matter for public discussion. We need to be able to discuss sex and gender in public and we have a right to do so.
I campaign on free speech issues for a living. I’ve held off commenting on most discussions about free speech in the last few weeks, but the more I see ‘cancel culture’ being used both as defence and attack, the more concerned I become that we're conflating different challenges.
Deeply worried about what this judgment means for free speech - and in particular the potential it gives for ever greater policing of an individual’s personal views and opinions by employers.
Judgement received. Bad news (for now) Stonewall law won this round.
Here is my statement in thread form.
I struggle to express the shock and disbelief I feel at reading this judgment
I know of at least two people at human rights organisations who have been made to feel they can't speak openly on these issues. If we can't have those discussions in our own organisations, where even a like or a retweet is taken as evidence of wrongthink, where can we have them?
I am really sick and tired of seeing free speech and human rights campaigners decry the abuse and misogyny women receive on social media platforms while turning a blind eye when that that abuse is in the name of defending another group's rights.

For what? For writing words. Writing fiction. For imagining differently.
We have to defend the rights of people to say things we disagree with. Again and again. Over and over. And condemn all those who use violence to silence.

Judge finds in Harry Miller case that police interfered with Miller’s rights to freedom of speech. Judge noted free speech includes the irritating, the contentious, the unwelcome and the provocative. The freedom only to speak inoffensively is not worth having.

We are sleep-walking towards a system in which perfectly legal online speech is regulated. Anyone who thinks this is going to target only deliberate nastiness and won't impact political criticism, religious expression or advocacy for minority groups is living in cloud cuckoo land

The abuse is by no means restricted to Rowling. Any woman who tries to talk about experiences faced by women is subjected to it. The experience of

Journalist casualties in the Israel-Gaza war.
As of November 2:
35 journalists and media workers were confirmed dead: 30 Palestinian, 4 Israeli, and 1 Lebanese.
8 journalists were reported injured.
9 journalists were reported missing or detained.
For the people saying: 'Well, they shouldn't be in human rights organisations unless they support rights for EVERYONE.' I agree. However, the challenge with rights is they sometimes conflict and in that case it's vital there's space, like a court of law, to debate those conflicts
Twitter's "hateful conduct" policy and confusion about what and is not permissible under terms of service does not help. But, more broadly, the "you can't say that" mantra is morphing from online to offline and impacting the way speech is policed.
The increasing number of instances of people being dismissed or disciplined for what they post on social media - in many cases on their personal pages - raises massive questions about our rights to legally express our own views and opinions

Landmark UK free speech case redacted in legal text book for A-level students because it might cause offence... This case was key in helping define how free speech is policed in UK - on an issue specifically made a matter (by government) of public political debate
@WeAreFairCop
Free speech includes the right to say things that others find shocking, disturbing and offensive. Outside of direct incitement to violence it is almost impossible to construct laws against speech in a way that targets only ‘bad’ speech.
I see we're confused again about what "freedom of speech" means. For clarity: it doesn't mean you get to say whatever you like without other people using their own freedom of speech to criticise or call you out for it. It doesn't mean you have the absolute right to a platform.
The United States should live up to its stated commitment to a

by dropping all charges against Julian Assange. This continued pursuit sets a harmful legal precedent that puts journalists everywhere at risk of prosecution simply for interacting with their sources.
We are greatly concerned by the U.S. Justice Department’s continued efforts to extradite Julian Assange and are closely following developments in his U.K. appeals process.

Going to say it again. We can't decry the abuse and misogyny women receive on social media but turn a blind eye when that that abuse is in the name of defending another group's rights. That doesn't make it ok.
Politicians - please stop lumping together all speech you find difficult, challenging or offensive as ‘hate speech’. It will do nothing to achieve the tolerance you say you wish to see, and everything to widen divisions. Yours, a free speech activist.

In the case of sex/gender, many people are engaged in a debate that was *specifically* made a matter of public discussion by UK govt. Saying people should not discuss this is to say those people should be excluded from political discourse. That’s not tolerance, that’s tyranny.
The US should drop its charges against Julian Assange. This case has gone on far too long. The prosecution of Assange in the United States would set a harmful legal precedent and deliver a damaging blow to press freedom everywhere.

The Israel-Gaza war is now THE deadliest for journalists covering conflict ANYWHERE since CPJ began documenting fatalities in 1992.
At least 36 journalists and media workers have been killed. Palestinian TV journalist Mohammed Abu Hatab is the latest.
We can’t take it anymore, we’re exhausted… We’re gonna get killed, it’s just a matter of when. There’s no protection, no impunity. These PPEs don’t protect us. Nothing protects journalists. We lose lives, one by one… Mohammed Abu Hatab was here, half an hour ago.
