Free speech does not mean freedom from consequences of speech. This is true. However, if the consequences of speaking lawfully are that you or your family face threats, assault, jail, or loss of income - whether government or mob-sanctioned - then you don't have free speech.

Dear @POTUS - it’s time to stop considering and take action on this case. The US should end its prosecution of Julian Assange. #Assange5YearsInBelmarsh.

Today marks five years that #WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has been imprisoned in the U.K. He is currently fighting against extradition to the U.S. where he would face prosecution on charges that would strike a blow to press freedom globally. 📢 We urge @POTUS to follow

At least 97 journalists have been killed since the start of the war, 92 of them Palestinian journalists killed in Israeli attacks. Those who remain are operating in impossible conditions. They deserve this recognition. They deserve protection. They deserve our support.

The US should drop its charges against Julian Assange. This case has gone on far too long. The prosecution of Assange in the United States would set a harmful legal precedent and deliver a damaging blow to press freedom everywhere.

In the case of sex/gender, many people are engaged in a debate that was *specifically* made a matter of public discussion by UK govt. Saying people should not discuss this is to say those people should be excluded from political discourse. That’s not tolerance, that’s tyranny.

It was a joy and a pleasure to host Amal Clooney and @mariaressa at @pressfreedom this evening. We could have talked for hours. Thankfully, these are not just women who talk brilliantly - they also do. It was an honour to be in their company. #JournalismIsNotACrime.

For the past year, Israel has systematically sought to suppress information coming out of #Gaza. Israeli forces have killed more than 126 journalists, destroyed media facilities, throttled communications, barred outside media. So pay attention to every journalist still reporting.

Yes, I know you wrote "Taught from their infancy that beauty is woman's sceptre, the mind shapes itself to the body, and, roaming round its gilt cage, only seeks to adorn its prison." But don’t you think she looks like she’s breaking out of prison?.

I am going to say this again, slowly. "Free speech" is not a get out of jail free card. It is not a magic defence. Disagreeing with someone does not give you the right to threaten them with violence. 1/.
