I'm hiring a postdoc! To use substitution models to understand protein evolution and/or improve phylogenetic methods.

Our latest preprint finds that a shortage of beneficial mutations does more to drive small populations extinct than mutational meltdown does. Explainers elsewhere @MawassWalid @JosephMatheson2 @Uliseshmc @JeremyJBerg

We have a new version of this preprint now up. It was depressing to add discussion of lack of testing for H5N1, in new developments while the manuscript was in review.
Our latest preprint finds that mass testing could control a future pandemic, even without contact tracing, avoiding both lockdowns and mass infection. Appendix covers logistics, achievable with sufficient investment/preparation. Let's do better next time.

@3rdreviewer We found that Ne predicts amino acid usage in vertebrates We used a different and we think better Ne metric.

@Coooo110 Saturation means that a dynamic process has converged on its equilibrium state. A rapid process will rapidly arrive at an equilibrium.

I'm hiring a postdoc, for bioinformatics work on amino acid substitution models. I think they are key for understanding biophysics of selection on proteins, mutation patterns, and ancient life, as well as improving phylogenetic methods.

@dbweissman @SamurSciCop @vsbuffalo @jgschraiber You also get interference from unlinked mutations when Ud>1 (and Ud>2.5 eg for humans) even with complete outcrossing. And this messes up rescaling, see

Our latest preprint explains why fitness can be defined in so many ways, and which version(s) you should use for what. See threads in other places for explainers @geeklhem @pierrickbourrat

Our latest paper on background selection is out at @GenomeBiolEvol. Thread explainers at other 2 sites. Briefly: the 1-locus model of independent sites is dead when the deleterious mutation rate exceeds 1. @JosephMatheson2
