@RhysWilliamsTV Let’s also remember that many parents can’t read with their children as reading difficulties are heritable and inter generational- the one most important job of school is to teach children to read!

Nothing is equitable about it. It is heart breaking. 💔 Our kids have us and that is why we all step up and keep pushing- but what about the kids who have no one, they will never have tutors and they will never have a chance. Hits hard indeed @janine_leonard

Balanced literacy and LLI is robbing my daughter of her childhood one day at a time. Kids like Grace have spent thousands of hours doing outside tutoring to make up for what the school is not doing. Tell me what is equitable about this? As a professional, one also has a duty and ethical responsibility to stay updated on current best practices. We wouldn’t see an oncologist that wasn’t using the best cancer treatment. So why is this acceptable for our kids? #fape #saydyslexia #dyslexia

As the mum of a struggling reader, I saw the psychological impacts in my child caused by failing at reading- behaviour, stress, anxiety, trauma: it is real and it needs to be addressed! Are we so blind we can not see? Literacy underpins every aspect.

"But how'd you reduce suspensions?" We taught kids how to read. "But how'd you improve attendance?" We taught kids how to read "But how'd you reduce teacher turnover?" We taught kids how to read Etc, etc... sometimes answers really are simple (just not easy)

@fifimorrison The current system isn’t meeting the increasing diverse needs of our children. Kids with SpLds need explicit teaching. Instructions casualties are real. It’s complex. But needs are increasing while instruction isn’t meeting them.

@RplusDyslexia Meanwhile. Children are being left to struggle and fail. Over and over. The consequences are devastating. It is just wrong.

@janine_leonard @TomMC93 Meanwhile. These are real children whose lives are being damaged. For those with parents who can support them there will damage limitation. For others the impact is devastating. This needs to change.

@BarryBlackNE Literacy and numeracy are at record lows. Scottish Government need to do one round of objective assessments for both across the school population. This would be the best money spend in education in a long long time. Until then we are failing children. And teachers. #failing

@anneglennie This just isn’t right. All the other evidence demonstrates the gap is widening and the literacy rates are damagingly low. How can we address the problems if we assess them with faulty systems?

@dnleslie @EducationScot Insanity: doing the and going over and over again. Billions have been spent in an attempt to close the gap: yet it is getting wider. We need to a new way! Put literacy at the forefront- give our children core basic skills

@eduleadership It is definitely a tier 1 problem. But yes we also have a tier 2 problem. And a tier 3 problem.
