Curious if there are any stats on the number of these pledges that actually materialize. I look at Buffet and I think he has changed his tune, also gave a substantial portion to a foundation for each of them to manage etc. So even if they get nothing at his death they have each gotten a ton in addition to the network, education, gifts, name brand etc I will say in reading about him, I am not sure I would quantify his parenting as good but he has given them a lot.

i have seen many use that for operating expenses leaving very little to flow through to be taxed as ordinary income. While I have also seen founders take lower than reasonable salaries so I agree with you that they are fundamentally the same. Just a major perception issue for a lot of people.

@gaylortax Easy way to insure your bill gets paid and let the new preparer know that they need to collect payment upfront. We will send but bill needs paid, disclosure authorization signed etc. other preparers are not the enemy why treat them as such? Plenty of work to go around.

Very much so. That being said many people judge their tax practitioner on what they saved then right now vs the long term. So historically preparers are rewarded for it and as a result it has became the way of life. The re-education/mindset shift needs to happen to for both the tax payer and the advisor/preparer

There is a startup equity calculator somewhere that was a spreadsheet that allowed you to input roles, hours, capital contributed etc to get the split between co-founders. Saw it a few times several years ago but don’t have a copy anymore. What I would do is break this down separately. - What are the roles and what is the correct split of equity from that perspective. - how much equity should be given for the cash Other option is to have the operators equity vest as the operations actually perform with some metrics around what that looks like

And this should not be an M&A advisor or exit advisor. Needs to be someone who is focused on him, his family, their needs, and the business. Not on the exit. Once you have that figured out then you know if it is time to bring in the M&A advisors but he needs to know himself first.

I don’t love the sensationalism but this is a well known negotiating tactic. Take a strong position that you are okay giving up but ground the negotiation at that point. Allows the other side to feel like they win while ending up where you wanted to be. Question: how often in history was this the way negotiations were done between nations yet we never knew about them because they weren’t public and didn’t have 24/7 media coverage? Really not a fan of the public drama but understand the negotiation tactic and assume it will continue if not accelerate with this administration, People/markets would do well to understand this and not be so reactionary.

Your question is missing a lot of detail but you would want to consult a cross border specialists. Depending on your intended use of the money etc, You may even need one in each side (one for how does Canada treat it and one for how does the US treat it). Have used for some CA/US cross border work before so you could start there
