Really grateful to the Smith Family Foundation for supporting our work developing a new approach to get guide RNAs into mitochondria. Excited to begin the Odyssey with a talented crew, including @Kottond and John Ngo!
Two junior faculty members at the @BUMedicine have been awarded Smith Family Foundation’s Odyssey Awards. 🎉 Congratulations to Drs. Florian Douam (@DouamFlorian) and Jessica Fetterman (@JLFetterman)!

While grant writing, I realized I didn’t know where the often referenced biochemical threshold of >60% variant allele frequency for pathogenic mtDNA variants was derived. It was the start of a journey and I’m grateful to Karan and all the coauthors who went on it with me!
What is the mitochondrial biochemical threshold? This systematic review explores heteroplasmy and OXPHOS to identify tissue-specific thresholds for pathogenic mitochondrial variants. The accepted threshold (>60%) might be lower than previously presumed.
