In 1936, my grandfather, Frank E. Beresford, a professional artist, went to see the lying-in-state of King George V. He was moved by the scene & asked permission to set up his easel and paint it. From this emerged his painting, The Princes' Vigil, which was bought by Queen Mary.
If only Nick Robinson was as aggressive with a French woman representing the EU point of view as with a British minister. BBC is still campaigning for Remain.

Boris says the BBC and the Archbishop of Canterbury have been more critical of the Rwanda plan than of Putin. The statement is striking because it is simply true. And it reveals just how the BBC and the AoC have got things out of proportion.
I am a candidate for the
@brexitparty_uk
in the coming European Parliamentary election. Number 5 on the list for the South East. I have been a Tory for years but MPs have failed to do what most of them promised. They need to be told off in a proper democratic way.
BBC Today programme presenter declares that almost everybody agrees that the coalition's austerity programme (getting our deficits and debt under control) was "a mistake". This is the level of half-baked Left-wing assumption that is now standard at the BBC.
It's worth pointing out that the Oxford/Astra Zeneca vaccine which seems likely to save tens of thousands of lives around the world is being produced by a commercial company on a non-profit basis.
Farage has an advantage over the other political leaders. He's saying what he really believes on the NHS, net zero and immigration. The other leaders are just pretending.
Can anyone explain to me why the government is casting doubt on holidays abroad this summer when by that time all the most vulnerable of us will have had two doses of the vaccine and most other adults will have had one dose at least?
But he didn't. He suggested the NHS is in a bad way. He suggested France might have a better system. France has universal access to healthcare like the UK.
The moment Farage disclosed his intention to end universal access to healthcare his political career should have ended
Privatisation of the NHS would lead to paying an “excess” each time you use the health service
Millions would go without treatment
He is far from a patriot!
Excellent piece comparing costs and benefits of accepting the sort of deal the EU is now suggesting. Conclusion is that EU deal is so bad and "colonial" that we should start now preparing for WTO trade terms which are preferable.
Inheritance Tax is hated because it is a confiscation of one's own money on which tax has already been paid. It also obstructs a fundamental animal instinct: to protect and help one's children.
A resident in France tells me the French press is running stories about how lax the British lockdown is. In France you have to fill in a form every time you leave the house with a note of the time you left and for which authorised purpose. Failure to do so = €135 fine.
How many in the EU realise that if they "occupy" and dictate to pharmaceutical companies, they won't be keen to locate in the EU in the future? And many other companies will come to think they cannot rely on normal business law applying in the EU.
@afneil
If either of these is true and if we care about the effectiveness of our healthcare system, we should at least begin to consider that the German healthcare system is better than ours and maybe we should adopt something like it.
Boris has adopted the Remainer explanation of why people voted for Brexit: that people felt "left behind". No, Boris, it was not some incoherent expression of emotion. We actually thought about the EU and decided we would like to leave it.
"one million days a year were spent on equality and diversity training in the public sector."
The Civil Service has lost track of the fact that millions of people who are not well off are forced to pay for it.
The Civil Service is meant to serve the government. These senior civil servants are thinking of openly opposing the government. They have ditched the unwritten constitution. They should be fired and replaced by people who understand their duty.
@afneil
From this and low German death rate, it surely follows that EITHER the German healthcare system has been much better than the NHS in testing cases (including cases with no or minor symptoms not leading to death) OR it has been better at caring for those who have been infected.
😤 The Deputy Prime Minister has reportedly told Tory wets that Britain will stay in the ECHR to avoid a 'massive Tory rebellion' well, Dominic Raab, I hope you're ready for a rebellion by us, the voters, against a weak government allowing illegal migration to run wild.
It is strange that some people are so exercised by the empire which Britain had in the past but so unconcerned by the current empire-building by China and Russia. Why is this?
I have just seen the premiere of the only film that you are like to be able to see which challenges the climate alarm consensus. You won't see it on the BBC because the BBC does not allow anyone to challenge this consensus.
Candidate selection has been the root of the decline of the Conservative Party. Too many who are centrists or who could happily have served under someone like Blair.
I don't think I've ever heard
@aliciakearns
say anything conservative or Conservative. Always sounds like a Foreign Office official. We need to fundamentally review candidate selection.
Even the Guardian has admitted that Michaela, a free school believing in discipline and respect, has achieved terrific results. It's not just that exams have been passed. Life chances have been transformed.
It's hard not to be furious with the MPs who refused to implement the referendum result. At the next election, I am tempted to go to Amber Rudd's constituency and campaign against her.
The creation of the Euro has been a disaster for Italy and even worse for Greece. The EU did this, causing millions to be unemployed and poorer than they otherwise would have been. This is the organisation that the "elite" is conspiring to keep us in.
This chart shows why early vote in

would hardly produce different result: Italian electorate has seen little in way of wealth gains since Euro creation. While GDP per capita is much higher in Germany, for Italy it remains below where it was upon Euro creation. (via BofAML)
The big failing of the Tory Party is that it has given up the ideological fight. It no longer argues passionately for free markets, low taxes and enterprise. So no real counter to socialist arguments. Terrific by

This the trouble with having people in power with no memory of the 1970s. It's been tried. It fails. Inflation is caused by excess money growth. It does not respect government diktats. Price controls only cause distortions and shortages.
Downing Street is drawing up plans for retailers to introduce price caps on basic food items such as bread and milk to help tackle the rising cost of living,

It's stories like this which bring home the fact that the EU has no respect for sovereign democratic states and, under the cover of idealism, is a nasty bully.
Good to see the Mail picking up the point made here previously that BBC's behaviour in ignoring the Corbyn Czech spy story is shocking. The people who rely just on the BBC for news will not know about it.
Imperial's reputation reaches a new low.
"Over the past few weeks, they have made extreme claims about the omicron variant that cannot be fully justified by fundamental science, let alone by clinical observation."

Utterly damning. The Department for Exiting the EU was a "Potemkin structure" behind which Theresa May was devising a different exit as presented at Chequers. She deceived the cabinet as well as reneging on her promises to the public. via

“"There is simply too little vaccine,” Markus Söder, the state premier of the German state of Bavaria, told the Bild newspaper on Sunday."
The disastrous EU failure in buying vaccines is not well enough reported in the UK.
Those chanting "Nazi scum" are the ones who should be wearing brown shirts. Intimidation and vilification are the techniques of totalitarians, not civilised democrats.
Equating "white power" with capitalism is just wrong. Japan, Botswana, India, China all have capitalism to a greater or less degree and thus drastically reduced real poverty in those countries.
This is what goes for
@bbccomedy
now:
"White power is Trump Tower..when we say we want to kill whitey we dont really mean we want to kill whitey (we do) *laughter* but when we say we want to kill whitey, it's like but not today. Whiteness is a capitalist structure"
@sophiedukebox
This is quite right. Calling the Brexit Party racist is the last, dirty resort of people who lack the honesty to say they think that remaining in the EU is more important than democracy.
I used to think that, whatever her faults, Theresa May had remarkable courage and resilience. Now I think she selfishly clings to office disregarding the fact she is damaging the Conservatives and her plan is loathed by them.
The government crisis was caused, in part, by the news that the Bank of England was spending billions supporting the gilt market because pension funds were in crisis. The pension funds were in crisis because they were taking reckless risks. The untold story is that the gov't...
I'm sorry, I don't buy the 'woman of duty and integrity' line. She plotted behind the backs of cabinet ministers. She promised us that no deal was better than a bad deal but then pursued a bad deal. She was driven by ambition, not honour.
Golf is to be stopped under lockdown. It should be exempt. Recent research has shown that risks of infection outside are dramatically lower than indoors. Which MP will put forward an amendment to exempt golf?
No. The counter protests show how dangerous it was to let antifa and extreme leftists get away with defacing statues and attacking the police last weekend. If the police let one lot get away with it, it opens the way to anarchy.
The

are terrified that they are losing control of the narrative.
The wave of new media coming their way will make them irrelevant and redundant quicker than they can imagine.
More speech is the answer to those who seek to censor and manipulate.
The jibes of Gove and now Rory Stewart against Boris damage them more than Boris. They are not helping the Tory party by insulting other candidates. They don't seem to realise how much danger their party is in. Far too entitled.
Sunak is not popular with Tory members and Mordaunt is not really a Conservative. MPs, please don't leave Tory members with a choice between these two.
"Last week, Milei announced that the country had recorded its first quarterly budget surplus since 2008, a modest 0.2% of GDP but still an astonishing achievement..., especially for a country that has run deficits for 113 of the last 123 years."

Tomorrow is not just about whether a ‘Johnson’ deal gets over the line. It’s about the political future of our nation. We have to defeat him so that our values of internationalism, peace & human rights can win.
The true seriousness of our economic situation is not being faced. Taxes will rise. Spending will be cut. A real risk of inflation. Mass unemployment. Soaring government debt. My piece for the Telegraph today. I fear I may have understated the dangers...
We are increasingly being told to clap this, be silent for that and kneel for something else. Enough! This is a free country. I only wish to be silent out of respect for those who lost their lives making it so.
I never expected this tweet to get such a big response. I am very touched by the many kind remarks people have made about my grandfather's painting. Thank you so much!
Either Osborne and the Treasury were incompetent in not understanding how the economy would react to Brexit or they knowingly created a false analysis to deceive people. Either way, their performance was shameful.

We understand very well what the EU means. Protectionism for one thing. Vengefulness for a second. Bullying, lack of respect for democratic, sovereign neighbours, arrogance...
We forgot what borders look like.
Some thought they would remain open with or without the EU.
They will now start to understand what leaving the EU really means...
It is Orwellian how the government, the EU and BBC all have worked in recent years to counter information and opinion that they don't like. "Disinformation" is the new term for "wrong-think".

This hammer & sickle T-shirt is as offensive as one with a swastika. Circa 100 million were executed, were tortured to death, died in terrible conditions in prisons and gulag camps or starved to death in Communist countries. Withdraw the shirt.
The Conservative government is a big disappointment - war on landlords, weak on house-building, high taxes and no sign of spending cuts - but Labour is even worse. Stopping North Sea oil drilling is simply bonkers. What a dismal time.
