European Union are extremely happy. Probably the happiest of everyone. Western liberals can continue to pontificate on issues such as racism and human rights in the comfort of their pointless think tanks without any smelly middle eastern brown people bothering them
Hamas --happy
Turkish Hizbullah--happy
Aliyev --happy
Putin --happy
Clientelist networks, drug cartels, contractors in Turkey --happy
Islamic fundamentalists everywhere --happy
Taxi drivers around the world --happy
What a delightful alliance, surely only good can come of this.
In Turkey, if a foreigner shows only a modicum of knowledge about the country, one is instantly met with suspicion. Mesela today someone thought I was MI6 because I know who Celal Bayar was. It's like having knowledge about the country means one has bad intentions.
My last night in Turkey. The past 8 years have been the greatest of my life hiç şüphesiz. I have met the most amazing people and seen the most breathtaking places. A hugely misunderstood country that like an onion, reveals more and more layer upon layer.
My dream is to retire and open a tekel in a small town in Mugla. Somewhere like Koyceyiz. I'll wear shorts every day while my wife eats cekerdek. I'm serious. Yep, that's the life for me. Iyi bayramlar
Bence it should never be this way. Knowledge should be praised, I am in love with this country. I find it fascinating and strive to learn more about it. After all my son has a Turkish mother. Being ignorant shouldn't be the new normal or where one is seen as strange or dangerous
It truly is a country that gives and gives and gives yet despite all the superlatives listed earlier, its people recieve only a fraction of the good fortune of what they deserve. I truly hope one day Turkey will achieve the peace, respect and security it so richly deserves.
Proud to be an öğretman. I am just a man who öğrets, not a superhero although I feel after spending most of the year teaching behind a screen, it sometimes requires a superhuman effort. Öğretmenler gununuz kutlu olsun to all the öğretmen and öğretwomen out there
Of course I'll be back. Back with a vengeance. I made a vow to die here (bit heavy I know, I listen to too much Morrissey). So its not really goodbye, more gürüşürüz.
God KK is so inept. All he had to do was unite conservatives, Turkish nationalists, Kurds, Islamists, social democrats, liberals, socialists and kemalists. It's so easy yet he could only muster 48% of the vote against a man who controls 90% of the media and all state insitutions
In a race where HDP/YSP isn’t running a candidate in the first round, KK couldn’t go hard nationalist, needed the other coalition partners, most of all Akşener, to pull their weight. They didn’t.
The generosity, zest for life and bravery of its people is something I will never forget and will surely take heart in the next chapter of my life. This country also gifted me the most phenomenal woman on earth, my wife who in turn gifted me my wonderful son.
@JaredWall01
Everybody laughs at me on the dolmus because I can't say 'musait bir yerde' properly. My life is hell. I say the far easier uygun bir yerde instead to not make myself look like a salak.

Dressing like it implies you’re inherently a sex object is dressing in way in which you know it’s sexualised. How tf is a woman covering her body from both perverted men AND women correlate them as sex objects ? You have women barely wearing any clothes.. but that’s freedom
Yeniden Refah Partisi Gençlik Kolları Başkanı Melih Güner:
"Müslüman bir ülkede milli takım forması giyen LGBT’li Ebrar Karakurt derhal ihraç edilerek ay yıldızlı forma üzerinden çıkarılmalıdır.”
Turkish is wrongly thought of as a kind pidgin language to many. However, examples such as this give us a glimpse into how it's an extremely expressive, expansive yet highly technical language. The false idea that Turkish unremarkable is due to its amazing functionality, thanks +
I suspect that syntactical factors and agglutinative morphology (see below) are also explanatory factors for native Turkish speakers' difficulties in learning languages like English & vice versa.
Below you see the translation of a single (not unusual) Turkish word.
There's something intangible about this place. Whenever I lamd in Istanbul and go wandering about the city in the middle of the night I feel an invisible, all embracing comfort blanket over my back. I've never felt such a feeling in the dozen or so countries i've been to.
From the time I nearly converted to Islam at 4am drunk off my ass in the back of a taxi driven by a man called Cevdet from Kastamonu to the time I took a bus to Trabzon instead of Denizli, I've made memories to last a lifetime. Worth more than gold.
48 hours back in the UK, went to the bakkal to buy some tütün. I gave the bakkalcı a big fat 'Hayırlı İşler' by mistake. Now I look like the local lunatic 🤦♂️
Hang on a minute mate, there are still people trapped under collapsed buildings and you're talking about postponing the election? Make yourself useful and go and sneer at some laughing women or whatever it is you do for fun
@JaredWall01
When I finally learned how to pronounce 'Gerizekali' after 5 humiliating years I started using it for everything. Also 'reca ederim' was just rec + a whole bunch of vowels
Yesterday I woke up, had a shower, did the laundry, brushed my teeth, read a chapter of my book, listened to a podcast, watched a documentary, cleaned the cat's litter box and watched some Netflix. Pretty normal day.
Oh and I became a father
The man will be 86 this year and easily looks 20 years younger. Proof that being a good person and staying positive keeps one youthful. Man's worked wonders for Eskişehir
The first 72 hours are crucial. We're already halfway in. I know times are hard but there are potentially thousands of people still trapped under rubble in temperatures as low as -10°c so if you can spare anything at all, it would be a godsend. A pound can go a long way in Turkey
I miss my students
I miss my office
I miss Lahmacun
I miss the dolmüş
I miss the sunshine
I miss the Hacı teyzes
I miss the Hacı amcas
I miss the CHP teyzes
I miss my balkon
I miss the street animals
I miss the language
I miss the taxi drivers with their conspiracy theories
I also pity the postcolonialists, the thirdworldists, the anti-Assadists, who still genuinely believe the government in Turkey actually cares about Syrian refugees when said refugees are political bargaining chips, nothing more, nothing less.
European Union are extremely happy. Probably the happiest of everyone. Western liberals can continue to pontificate on issues such as racism and human rights in the comfort of their pointless think tanks without any smelly middle eastern brown people bothering them
I suffered a heart attack last month. I can't thank the staff at the local devlet hastanesi enough for taking care of me. I went to a private hospital a couple of weeks ago to check with a cardiologist to see if everythings OK. He looked at my heart with an ultrasound and told +
Lord give me the bravery and fearlessness of a Turkish adolescent who wants to study at a foreign university at degree level despite not knowing the language.
This is a result of 70 years of European collective guilty conscience for nearly a millenia of European antisemitism which culminated in the Holocaust. Jews were blamed for all of Europe's ills from the Black Death to the financial meltdown of the late 19th Century
+ me "You are healthy and handsome four times" trying to show off his English despite the fact I can speak Turkish. I was in there for 5 minutes. 400TL for being told I'm handsome four times? Money well spent I'd say ☺️. It's the adult version of a dentist giving a kid a lollipop
Hi Turks. About last night's tweet. I had a long day and some guy thought I was MI6 so I got annoyed. I didn't mean to generalise all Turks like this. Just an observasyon. In the UK we make a statement without a frequency adverb like 'sometimes' but it doesn't mean gerçekten.
Ogrenci: Hocam I need lessons from you
Me: Why?
Ogrenci: I want to do my Yuksek Lisans in a European University in 6 months time. I need to be C1 level by the summer
Me: OK, what level are you now?
Ogrenci: A1 I guess
🤦♂️
My wonderful Turk friends put themselves down about their Ingilizce but the sheer fact I can understand them even in their broken English is something impressive so pat yourselves on the back for God's sake. It really annoys me because they have no idea how akili they really are
Insha Allah one day Turkey will revert to the Arabic script, alcohol will be banned, hijab will be compulsory and the whole country will be ruled by shari'ah. With Allah's permission.
@JaredWall01
The problem with the koltuks on the eski dolmusler is that despite having 4 seats at the back, there is only space for 3 people with a popo half the size of Kim Kardashian
Every summer in Turkey teachers in private schools announce they've left their school to join some other mediocre private school for 200TL a month extra and plaster it all over Instagram and Facebook like a shitty version of the football transfer market
This earthquake was AFAD's first real test. The agency received criticism, some of it valid, and some of it very unfair. The government will definitely take away lessons from this experience and work to make the agency more dynamic in the future.
I'm going to write a new dizi about a fakir kizi from İç Anadolu and a zengin Istanbullu adamı where both parents disapprove of this forbidden love.
I'm gonna call it 'All I Niğde is you"
We are a reasonable country, but our patience has now run out.
Our Parliament is sovereign, and it should be able to make decisions that cannot be undone in our courts.
That’s what this emergency legislation delivers.
I've been to some well dodgy places in New York, Cairo, Bucharest, East London, Istanbul and Amsterdam, all at night and nothing happens but I go to Sarayköy and I end up getting mugged 🤦🏼♂️

Poll:
Should the Bank of England interest rate continue to be used as the main lever to try and control the current bout of persistently high inflation?
@nevsinmengu
The problems in the UK are a result of Brexit, not economic mismanagement. Imports to and distribution within the UK are dependent on foreign lorry drivers. Now that they need to obtain visas to enter the country (not the case before) there is a massive shortage off drivers.
Burası Zeytinli Rock Festivali. Alkolden ve uyuşturucudan şuurunu kaybetmiş gençler günler boyunca pislik içinde işte bunları yapıyor. Organizasyonun tuvalet görüntülerini iğrenmemeniz için paylaşmıyorum. Her festivalde mutlaka büyük kavgalar çıkıyor.
My wife sent me to the supermarket to buy some kup seker and I came back with this. I might have to open up a kiraathane now. Any suggestions for names appreciated
I love how in Turkey people say 'kolay gelsin' even when it is abundantly clear you are slacking off at work. I was out back having a cigarette at work today looking like a complete slob and the coca cola delivery man who was drenched in sweat said it to me.
I'm currently in Starbucks Alsancak. The place where divorced 51 year old men meet up with their teenage daughters for an hour a week on a Sunday morning
The greatest achievement of the AKP has been its ability to re-write history and convince everybody in Turkey and the wider world that the CHP was the cause of Turkey's ills pre-2002. This despite the CHP being in power for a grand total of 18 months for the past 50 years.
Something I don't like about Turkey is when there is a natural disaster, a famous death or even a terrorist attack, companies get their employees to share messages of support with the company logo on sosyal medya. All over Instagram today. Really distasteful. Anything for a buck+
1. The weather
2. The fact Turks don't lock up the elderly in old people's homes when they become a slight inconvenience
3. It's a republic
4. The food
Top ways in which Turkey is better than England:
1. Breakfast
2. The Bosphorus
3. Samovars, so tea always available without you having to make it
4. May Day riots
5. Men shave their armpits
6. Language is genderless (avoids tedious arguments about pronouns)
