Cheesy? Yep. A bit nonsensical? Absolutely. Joyless? In no way whatsoever! It's a joyous piece of fun cinema that should just be enjoyed as such.
Absolute belter of an episode of Succession tonight. I can't recall a show with such great writing and direction, with a perfect ensemble of actors at the top of their game. This scene from Kieran Culkin was amazing. They shot the whole funeral in a single take with four cameras.
@MrBrendanCox
She resigned over a vote that will make no material difference to the situation in the middle east and is merely posturing. And for that she loses the chance to make an actual difference in the lives of vulnerable women.

Comfort yourself that if your revolution ever comes and you find yourself against the wall you only have yourself to blame, comrade.

"Standing against war" is an infantile phrase when it means passing a motion which would effectively cede Ukrainian land to an occupying force who have raped and tortured children and adults. Sometimes military self-defence is the least worst option.

I moderate the largest labour supporting group on Facebook and I can say from experience that nothing brings out abuse more than women who dare step out of line on this issue. I am shocked at what some GC women have experienced, often from people supposedly extolling 'kindness'.

@francesweetman
I genuinely, genuinely do not understand how anyone can think this is OK. Its not OK in general society - it's a misogynistic parody of femaleness for fetishistic self-fulfillment - so why is it be OK in schools. Someone needs the courage to just say, 'no, this isn't acceptable'
@ytiedmai

Because:
1. You view them as a target you can speak over without repurcusions
2. Because you're able to dehumanise them with labels like TERF without actually engaging with what they may be concerned about
3. You have a over inflated sense of self and 'using your privilege'

Amazingly, outside of social media bubbles, most people don't care one way or the other what Jo thinks about this. They just like reading good books. Don't be fooled by the strange insular world of Twitter.

Amazing - a journalist commenting on such a high profile piece (fantastic work Rosamund!) without actually reading it.
@stellacreasy
Hi Stella. Do you agree that this is a complex issue. As you say, parents can be a challenge, but surely so is an authority figure encouraging kids to keep secrets from parents - that's an absolute red flag in all safeguarding guidelines and has been the cause of unreported abuse
@emzanotti
Actual pilgrimages involving ordinary people were a regular feature of medieval life. I was a tour guide at Canterbury Cathedral and the records there are quite clear that people from all parts of society formed the throngs who visited the Shrine of St Thomas.

I found myself defending the right of women not to have their consent violated against a woman arguing it's all fine which was a bit weird.

I mean that is a bit nonsensical tbh. Osborne and Balls vigorously opposed each other *when in office*. Just because they are able to have civilised discussions now isn't a bad thing. Osborne's point was conduct in office, not afterwards.
@BBradley_Mans
After ten years in power the Conservatives haven't dealt with terrible problems like these - in fact they are worse now than in 2010. Yet you will use the extreme examples to justify his decision to vote against free school meals. No one thinks it's FSM alone that will fix this.
@SimonFRCox

If people hadn't debated, for example, the rights of gay people to marry it would never have happened. Debate is essential for progress.
@RosieDuffield1
His defenders are unbelievably awful as well. I've had one telling me he (yes *he*) has no compassion for the 16 year old victim yet as it needs to be proved 'beyond reasonable doubt' first.
Others showing their lack of experience with abuse victims. Just awful.

Fixed it for you. And get out of here with your American ignorance of what the provos meant for ordinary people in the North. There's a reason they had little actual support.

Is this one of those times when the more you cope and seethe, the wilder the accusations become? Because there's a whole weekend ahead of you, you might want to pace yourself.
@HadleyFreeman
Ugh. I don't get why people like this. At the recieving end of 'high maintenance' people are usually poorer people just wanting to keep their jobs in hotels, restaurants, venues etc.

You, Owen. You have consistently encouraged pile-on behaviour against those you deem beyond the pale. This is where that leads. You need to own that.

Except the 'whole nation' didn't decide, a few did and it was imposed on the populace who had no choice in the matter. Those who did try and resist this were hounded and persecuted.
Invited some American friends to the (relatively) normal Anglican Church we attended at the time. For some reason I've never worked out, the curate decided to make everybody do the conga around the nave. Mortified doesn't cover it.

The point is that they can't really. They can be 'COVID safer' but not 'secure'. All measures except isolation (and a vaccine) are just mitigations against risk, not prevention.
@kristenhowerton
From this side of the pond (the UK) this is fascinating. I forget that there's a distinctive 'Christian' culture in the US that is unlike Christianity anywhere else in the world.
@JoyceCarolOates
And we recognise that you cannot live in the past, that generational trauma is a fraud that traps people in destructive cycles. Both Ireland and Britain have forged a new relationship.
(and pretty much every Irish family has English relatives, and visa versa. We intermarry).
@scribblercat
@joelycett
That's nonsense. As Israel is the only state in the region that gives equal right to gays and women I think time would be better spent on the states that keep women in servitude and bindage, and tend to. Stone/behead/throw gay people off buildings. "pink washing" - such bollocks
Congratulations to

who ran a great campaign. The fact that 70% of the electorate voted against Peter Nutting shows the strength of feeling there is against the North West Relief Road and for a more sustainable transport policy.

It could be argued the establishment of religious orders was to minimise and limit women's roles, and that restoring women to the Diaconate is an act of justice.
@AndyMcDonaldMP
It's irresponsible of an MP to make any preemptive judgement on this. To do so inky increases the risk of attacks on already besieged Jewish people in this country. I hope you withdraw this.

Anti-trans US republicans are not the same as UK gender-critical feminists and their allies. That you try and conflate the two is kind of like arguing that Hitler was Vegetarian and many Green Party members are vegetarian, so clearly there's no difference between them.

Completely untrue. We have great teams here. In fact, in the ward in which I'm standing we've seen more people willing to get involved than for some time.

Yes, yes it is. It removes any actual discussion of the issues and is an ad hominem move to avoid any actual debate. It's the equivalent of a toddler sticking their fingers in their ears and yelling.
@OldRoberts953
Middle class politicians confusing the working class 'live and let live' attitude with an enthusiasm for post-structuralist gender theory.
@SisterWalburga
I'm not quite a Catholic, Sister, but I don't get how someone can be a Catholic and reject a Church council or a Pope because they don't like the outcomes. Isn't it logically inconsistent with the actual fundamental understanding of the Church is for Catholics?
@calvinrobinson
Disgraceful response from a so-called priest. Not even a hint of compassion for the victims, or condemnation of the acts - even if you want to caveat it with 'if proven'. Utterly repellent.
@lottelydia
That assumes that the protest has any merit, is based in fact, and is relevant to event disrupted. Protest is not, on itself, automatically good.
In this case, it seems to rest on a misrepresentation of Professor Stock's views. So some scepticism of its value isn't unwarranted.
@empathyhaver
Let's be honest. Most men who can't find a partner are either repulsive, porn-addled, unsociable, sexist, are unable to act normal around women, or lack basic hygiene.
And watching 3/10 men expect 8/10 women to find them attractive is just embarrassing. (Written as a clear Mid)

Ridiculous. The only way to reduce cars is to build better public transport infrastructure. More public transport infrastructure means a level of development. This objection to HS2 is sentimental conservativism that offers no solution.
Such a simple statement, yes so important. Why do we tolerate roads and infrastructure that puts our children at risk at the expense of the car? Is the car more valuable than a child's life?

@Psephizo
Ian, that's nonsense. The press have carried out investigations for a century - that's what journalism is. The presumption of innocence is the right not to be held criminally liable without a trial. It doesn't mean the press cannot report allegations against a perpetrator.
@AbbyJohnson
@sandracfong
As a Christian shouldn’t the command to love your neighbor trump any desire for personal freedom. You wear a mask not for you, but to protect others (especially from those who may be infected without symptoms or asymptomatic). Wearing a mask is an act of Christian love.
@PaulEmbery
I'm no Grace fan, but she's right. Do you suggest that people all decide to suspend their judgement in the vague hope it might some to court unlike the vast majority of rape cases?
@evolvepolitics
Why. I don't need to prove it to you. You will see I have publicly retweeted you on my timeline for all to see. If I'm lying it'll get called out. But I'm not. You are.
