My grandfather, Owen McCarthy passed away at grand age of 95 this week. He was one of Ireland’s top referees in his day, refereeing the FAI Cup final in 1968 (which he always said was the highlight of his career), along with numerous international and European Cup matches.
Hook every single second of this to my veins. Gamble giving zero fucks after getting halved, Rico trying to kill Alan Kelly, Georgie’s tap dancing, Biscuits winding up Fenlon. Absolutely amazing.

Would appreciate if anyone up north or anyone who may have followers up north could RT - my cousin Aidan has been missing since Friday. He was last seen on Clarendon Street in Derry on Friday at 5pm. He’s 5’8, medium build, last seen in jeans & navy jacket
Emmmmmmm... what? Like just... what?? How is that a free kick? How? That’s a baffling one. How has the referee awarded a free kick? Ramblers robbed of a goal.
Always hard to say goodbye, but even harder when you’re watching a live stream of mass hundreds of miles away. God bless Granny Rosie, you were the very definition of the word matriarch and an incredible woman. You will be sorely missed, and lovingly remembered every day x
Was among the first public vehicles to go over the new bridge at
@dunkettleint
today (bang on 12 noon) and I geeked out slightly (majorly). Day made. I’m a man of simple pleasures.
So very sad to hear that Paudie Palmer has passed away. The voice of Cork GAA - such an incredible commentator. My condolences to Paudie’s family and friends, and to his colleagues at 96FM and C103. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
Absolutely delighted to go under two hours for the
@TheCorkMarathon
half. What an amazing experience - running down Patrick’s Street to finish was very very special. Always a proud moment to put on the
@RunningWGH
singlet too. What a day!
Off to the shop to buy a Roy Of The Rovers bar, a Desperate Dan bar, a packet of Banshee Bones, a Smiler bar, ten penny jellies and a bottle of TK Red Lemonade. Not sure yet what I’ll do with the change.
Delighted to have completed the FAI’s Referee Beginners course recently. Did it as a tribute to my late Granda Owen, who was one of the best referees in the country in his day. Looking forward to getting going and giving something back to the game I’ve loved all my life.
Absolutely beyond thrilled to be nominated at the
@IMRORadioAwards
. Genuinely shocked but delighted. I’m in very good company here - an insanely strong category. And a huge thank you to my partner in crime
@ValerieWheeler_
for forcing me to put in the entry in the first place!
My timeline is full of heartbreak this morning, we’ve lost a giant of a man. It’s plain to see how much he meant to so many people. I’m so very sad today.
💚🤍💔
Thoroughly enjoyed commentating on that game, and a pleasure talking through it with my old pal
@DanMuz6
for the 90 mins. A real thrill to commentate on my first TV game, so to speak. My late Granda would have been chuffed. Looking forward to the next one!
My Granda Owen McCarthy refereed the 1968 FAI Cup Final when Rovers beat Waterford, and always called it the proudest day of his career. Thanks to John Caulfield guiding City to victory in 2016 I was able to bring to cup to him - he was delighted. Thanks for everything, John.
Tremendous scenes this morning - absolutely over the moon to have picked up two
@IMRORadioAwards
nominations. Particularly proud of the nomination for the Jerry Harris tribute show with
@ColmOSully
- that show meant a huge amount to me personally. Roll on Kilkenny!

Couldn’t run the half at the
@dublinmarathon
due to a knee injury but decided to walk the distance instead, as I’m a stubborn git. Bate, but that was thoroughly enjoyable.

Oh for a full Turner’s Cross again. A pic from before the 4-2 win over Levadia Talinn in the Europa League in 2017 that my phone randomly showed me today. One day again soon, hopefully.

After 3 years in Watergrasshill it appears I’ve gone full country. Was leaving work and asked the missus if there was anything we needed while I was “in the city”. My word.

Great crowd at CinemaWorld Douglas on its penultimate night of trading. One of the first dates I had with my now wife was here, we went to see Shrek. She didn’t want to see “a kids movie” but I won, and it ended up becoming one of her favourite ever films.Will miss the old place
Later, after he had finished on air, he passed the sports desk on his way out... but then doubled back, stuck his head around the partition and said: "Bye, girls... pair of wankers!"
We giggled like school kids for the rest of the day.
RIP
Ran my first half marathon tonight. Didn’t mean to, just started off as a regular run with the
@RunningWGH
crew, but felt good and just kept going. Absolutely over the moon to tick off one of my major running goals. Delighted. Now for chocolate to celebrate.
I’ll be paying tribute to the late, great Jerry Harris on the Bench tomorrow. Damien Richardson, Decky Daly, Derek Coughlan, Dan Murray, Eanna Buckley, Mick Ring, Liam Kearney & Tony O’Donoghue will share their memories of the great man from 6, and a few more as well.
Two years old today, two years since this little whirlwind came into our lives. Time flies. The absolute boss of the house, and the most determined person I’ve ever met in my life. And the happiest little girl on top of it. Happy birthday Isabelle :)
A sad day today as
@Lisa_Lawlor
departs Cork’s RedFM. Not an April Fool’s unfortunately! A nice touch too as
@CorkCityFC
present Lis with a signed jersey. Tune in from 6 for Lisa’s last show.
Big fan of Ed Sheeran saying that Ipswich were “currently losing to Barrow”, therefore placing the time of the Hootenanny recording between 7.45-930 on December 15th.
An absolutely huge honour to be named Watergrasshill AC Chairperson. I have some very big running shoes to fill following Colette’s departure but I’m incredibly excited about leading the club forward into the future.

Back running (kinda) after six months of injury, laziness and getting fat. Very fat. Loads of work to do to get to where I was but good to be back doing something that isn’t sitting down and eating crisps. Now to sit down and eat crisps.

I love this time of year. You go into the kitchen for a glass of water, BAM - crisp sandwich and a handful of Roses. Two minutes later - back into the kitchen for the water you forgot.
A tough day out at the Cobh 10, was in bed sick all week and even this morning I was still debating on going. Glad I did, but it was hard work. Our own Tom from
@RunningWGH
was the 95 pacer and he dragged me around. Great day, tough course, lovely atmosphere.
There’s me at the front. Asking questions while rocking child 2 to sleep, while child 1 sits patiently waiting for ice cream. Dad of the year stuff, really. Both the girls are hoping for Ramblers and Wanderers wins this weekend.
As
@Haganator
just said to
@rayfoleyshow
, today really, really should have been a bank holiday for Cork. Just Cork. And people from Cork around the country. And Corkonians abroad. And people from Kildare to say thanks for Larry.

Derek was one of my sporting heroes growing up, and was absolutely delighted to have him in studio today to look back on the 1998 FAI Cup final win. A gentleman. On the

Christ that
@sultans_of_ping
gig was one of the best gigs I’ve ever seen. Sensational from start to finish. Niall is the best frontman in Irish rock history. No question. What a night. What a night. Nearly didn’t make it back up after Turnip Fish but that’s another story.
A great evening spent with
@valeriemulcahy
and Briege Corkery recording a new episode of Hear Me Roar this evening. Plenty of great stories and plenty of laughs. Just the 28 All Irelands between the three of us in studio tonight!
That was insanely tough. The last 7k from Rafeen to the finish line was a nightmare. Endless hills. Delighted to have finished though and a huge turnout from
@RunningWGH
.

Today was a tough day for Lisa and me but I think we did a good job paying tribute to the great Liam Miller. You can listen here or download the podcast.
Lovely to meet

Interviews with Tim Clancy, Dermot Usher, Malik Dijksteel, Seani Maguire, Barry Coffey, Greg Bolger and Cian Coleman in the bag for tomorrow’s

@CorkCityFC
are crowned first division champions.
Happier that France have won. Sad the World Cup is over, it’s been great. Absolutely fucking delighted I’ll never have to see that Maroon 5 ad ever again.
Today we administered our 10,000th dose of a Covid-19 Vaccine in our vaccination centre for frontline staff. Ester Dolan, who received the dose, was happy to mark the occassion with a picture to spread the good news. Well done to the team.

And just like that my little puddins is off to pre school. The last three years have gone by in the blink of an eye. A few tears on the handoff, all of them from Dad, but she skipped in the door.
Cork's
@spike_osullivan
will take on Cuba's Erislandy Lara for his WBA world middleweight title on May 28 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
Co-main event to the Gervonta Davis v Rolando Romero fight
Absolutely gutted to hear this. Pat was so so good to me when I was starting out in this sports journalism lark. Always a pleasure being in his company. He will be sorely missed. RIP Pat.
Shocked and terribly, terribly saddened to hear of Pat McAuliffe's passing. Pat was a great friend, and always, always good fun to be around. The press box is going to be a far less interesting place without Pat in it. Thoughts with his family, friends and colleagues. RIP Pat.
