Hanging the flag of another country is not something we would normally consider, but this is a special case. The idea came from our staff and there was a consensus this was a small gesture we could make to support Ukrainian Canadians.
Last year there were four canopy strikes on the Halifax bridges. This year there have been 18. Look for a series of height guard clearance bars to be installed soon to help drivers figure out when their vehicles are too tall for their selected lane.
Even the wildlife want to see what's happening on the bridges! It appears an inspector from Harbourside Engineering woke Rocket up from his morning nap. After a brief stare-down, the freelance mercenary retreated quietly. No inspectors were harmed in the taking of this photo.
To commemorate Emancipation Day on Sunday, August 1, Halifax Harbour Bridges (HHB) has hung the African Nova Scotia flag on the Macdonald Bridge. The Nova Scotia flag is hanging on the other tower.
For more information:

It’s getting colourful on the Macdonald Bridge! The Nova Scotia flag on the Halifax Tower recognizes Natal Day and the Pan-African Flag on the Dartmouth Tower acknowledges Emancipation Day. See them up close during Bridgewalk on July 31, 2-4 pm.
Africville was a vibrant, close-knit community on the shores of Bedford Basin until the community was expelled in the 1960s. Because the origins of the MacKay Bridge are tied to the loss of Africville, HHB (Halifax Harbour Bridges) .../2

Another gem from Donna Yorke Rushton's collection of photos from the building of the A. Murray MacKay bridge. Anyone else feel their stomach flip when they think about being in that spot to take that photo?

Here's another photo to share from Donna Yorke-Rushton's collection. Her father worked on the building of the A. Murray MacKay bridge!
Our CEO Steve Snider found this at an auction recently. It's an engineer’s rendering – completed in 1949 – six years before the bridge opened and at a couple of years before the sod was turned. At this point it was not yet named the Angus L. Macdonald bridge.

HHB will close the bridges if winds are sustained at 120km. Winds are usually higher at the MacKay - one could close and not the other. We will give as much notice as possible if that becomes a possibility.
