The Mexican protocol of temperature check and hand sanitizer to enter buildings is so divorced from the science but has become a weird cultural norm - like taking your hat off at church.
@randomrecruiter
Candidate in the wrong. You might need 1-2 days to chat with family, but 1.5 weeks is egregious. He's not going to get a revelation on the 9th day.
The company needs to fill the role and rightfully continued to search.
If you are an engineer from Mexico -
1) Get a job in the US using a TN visa.
2) Do a good job. Become a dependable employee. Understand the company.
3) Negotiate remote work.
4) Go back to Mexico
5) You've just 4x'd your salary.
De nada.
Latinos después de 10 años de inglés profesional:
"My English is OK but I have lots of improvements to make"
Gringos después de 3 horas de Duolingo:
"Yeah, I'm pretty close to fluency in Spanish"
2021 side project - coach 10-15 Latin American devs to get a remote job with a US company. Gratis.
10 Semanas.
In Mexico, no more that 10% of your employees can be foreigners. By law.
One of the most xenophobic laws I can think of, just sort of accepted by the general public.
@josedlujan
Gringos will apply to jobs where they only meet one of the criteria.
Latinos won't apply to jobs unless they meet all of the criteria.
Canaliza tu "inner-gringo"!
@BridgetPhetasy
Brunch is a coping mechanism for 9-5ers who realize they have nothing going on outside of work. A basic meal expands to fill the entire day and accelerates the arrival of Monday morning and thus purpose.
Me case hace 2 semanas. 🇲🇽🙏
@gabomgmx
Claro! I'm all for vaccines for everyone.
Mexico City is increasingly becoming "where LATAM talent meets the world"
I've spoken to Cubans, Colombians, Peruvians, Dominicans...all living here.
Close to the US but close to home, Spanish speaking world class city.
And easy to immigrate to.
I'm long CDMX
In Madrid, wealth tax is zero and inheritance tax is 1%.
And income tax is almost 50% after 60k/year.
A place impossible to get rich, but easy to stay rich.
My wife is a 3rd year Computer Science major at BYU in Idaho (remotely), and is looking for a summer internship. Who wants to hire her?
She is from Cali Colombia, but we live in Mexico City.
Here are 4 things she can do to provide value from Day 1: 👇🏻
My company
@GringoJobs
- just hit 10k followers!
We are fast becoming the place where tech talent from LatAm finds US job opportunities.
Want to work with us? Send me a DM!
Apparently there are Spanish people who open UberEATS delivery accounts, subcontract (to undocumented Latinos) and then keep most of the earnings.
Ripping off Latin Americans while doing absolutely no work? Can't think of a more Spanish job!
Between the US tech giants, the new local unicorns, and all the remote companies, the demand for tech talent in Mexico is 🚀
If you are a company, consider other LatAm geos. If you are a candidate, now is your time!
Today I'm announcing Gringo Jobs - a newsletter for devs in LatAm interested working with international companies.
Expect interesting content, tools, and even some jobs.
Mexican bureaucracy is a never ending comedy.
Minimum recruiting standards:
Review a resume in 72h
Provide an answer post interview in 24h
If they give an assignment that takes more than 2 hours, provide some feedback
@moseskagan
Be a specialist in public and a generalist in private.
Aka you get hired for a specific thing you can do well. But once inside you have no problem figuring other things out.
So far, in my very small Twitter experience, here is how to go viral:
Say something that is basically true, but devoid of nuance. And make sure it could be read in an offensive way.
Este sábado - nuevo Webinar! 👀
"Impuestos y el SAT siendo Freelance: Consejos para ahorrar tiempo (y dinero!)"
Mucho de ustedes están interesados en trabajar directo para empresas de EEUU en modalidad freelance. 👇🧵
The deal that Spain offers Latin Americans:
Come to our country, it's safe, runs pretty well, good health care and infrastructure. Same language. Path to citizenship.
In exchange you will feed our ever growing gerontocracy with your labor and taxes.
Finanzas (impuestos/inversiones/USD vs Crypto vs moneda local)
Career advice
Network de oportunidades full time/freelance de alto
Interesting fact: the US immigration system is such a mess that many Indian programmers get work permits in Mexico to be as close as possible.
(And thus services made for them pop up)

"The Mexican Dream - How to multiply you salary by 5 in 3 years"
I believe that engineers from Mexico have a tremendous opportunity to multiply their earning potential if they play their cards right.
Just placed a Senior Product Manager from 🇦🇷 in a B2B Saas startup.
If you think LatAm is just outsourced coders, think again.
You can build your whole team here.
Hiring internationally is doing a phenomenal job of smashing the credentialism and elitism of US universities.
US companies are now hiring people who went to schools that they never heard of.
Today we are launching
Basically everything you need get a job in the US - from the resume to offer negotiation. All for free.
I used
@podia
which ended up being great so far.
Dame tu feedback!
Let's not kid ourselves. We are in a software recession. Companies are desperately trying to get profitable. When they hire in Latin America for the "incredible talent pool", it's the "incredible and low cost talent pool" they are talking about.
Madrid is a perfect city. Weather, culture, infra, costs.
You can go eat a mofongo like you're in Washington Heights, and 30 min later be staring at Guernica. The subway costs 61 cents a ride and NEVER smells like pee.
The Spanish bar is the perfect bar. A real social bar scene
If your last 4-5 jobs have all been less than 1 year, have you considered just calling yourself a consultant and doing a specific gig at a company?
Companies who see a jumpy resume have no reason to believe you'll stay with them - and won't want to invest in you.
801 days to get an appointment for a US Visa in Colombia. 801! You could move to Spain, get Spanish citizenship and go to the US Visa free in less time.
Silicon Valley healthcare entrepreneurs won’t believe you when you cite that Spanish life expectancy is almost a decade a longer than American, despite the much lower GDP per capita and lower healthcare spend.
Until some looks it up on their phone.
There is a corner of the digital nomad internet that will say that NYC is a no-go zone where you'll get stabbed and 2 tweets later recommend you move to.....Cali Colombia.
You are probably a multi talented professional with many gifts and interests. A resume is not the time to show these off.
A resume is a sales doc to show that you can fit into a specific box and meet specific requirements.
I've signed up for
@100daysnocode
No-Code MVP Bootcamp
I'm going to build a Basic Glassdoor for Mexican remote Devs. Let's make this more transparent.
🥳 Can't wait to build + launch my MVP over the next next 30 days!
#100daysofnocode
There is a huge world of smart people who trained at call centers in LatAm - who have great English, understand the US culturally.
Instead of making 700 bucks a month at the call center, could be making 2500 in a remote job.
Who is going to build the "Spanish citizenship in a box" for Latin American devs?
(Latam citizens get citizenship in 2 years)
Just spoke to a mid-level front end dev from Argentina making pesos. He makes an equivalent of around 10k USD per year😨
@GringoJobs
te saldra del quilombo.
A friend of my wife's from Cali, Colombia currently works as a carpenter in Texas without papers, and makes about 2000 USD/week.
Spain might provide a more humane health system, but you will never ever make that amount of $$$.
Mexico City without a doubt.
Tepito market, driving a Fierro Viejo truck, shooting down helicopters in Lomas, winning the lottery for the presidential plane.
I could go on.
Rockstar FINALLY confirmed that development on Grand Theft Auto 6 is "well underway." Rumors be damned, where would YOU like GTA 6 to take place if you had the choice?
We spend about 3000 euros per month in central Madrid. Some outings but nothing too crazy.
That is 36k per year.
To spend that you'd have to make around 60k euros pretax in Spain.
That salary puts you in the top 4% of earners in Spain.
So no "normal" Spanish in Madrid?
Another reason why LatAm might not feel the layoffs as much.
US companies are trying to cut costs so will stop hiring from expensive US markets....which means switching to LatAm.
A bad judgement on my part.
Getting a driver's license in the world:
"What speed do you maintain if you are following a school bus in a mid density zone and there is a light rain..."
Getting a driver's license in Mexico City:
"Hello, do you have 900 pesos to give me?"
Saturday is going to be 🌧️ in Mexico City. So I'm staying in and doing resume reviews.
Totally free. 30 min. Vamos a gringificar tu CV! Sign up here while they last.
@TerranigmArk
Just read the CV of a Colombian developer who put in his PRIMARY SCHOOL with the phone number! lololol
"Excuse me, I'm calling to do a reference check. Did he take naps regularly or was he a bit fussy?"
One reason why the Electoral college won't disappear - it makes for such good television.
In France you just wait around until 8pm and the winners face appears on TV. Boring.
In the US you get to play a giant game of Risk over 24 hours with 300m people.
