. I'm passionate about mentorship, advocacy, and DEI. For fun I like to craft with my Cricut, roller skate, cook and eat good food. I'm excited to connect with my future peers.
My classmate, one of the handful of black women on campus, was murdered after she just received the intern of the year award at the end of her first year of her general surgery residency. She was a mother, a beautiful soul and an inspiration. Please consider donating
Being the first doctor in your family is exciting until you find out all the things you didn't know about med school, like OSCEs, shelf exams, away rotations and not being guaranteed to match into your chosen specialty or even match at all & don't even get me started on residency
ERAS and ResidencyCAS have been signed, certified, submitted, to be delivered on September 25th, 9AM EST. And in true me fashion I submitted while currently a patient in L&D Triage at 36 weeks pregnant getting worked up for a kidney stone

Today ERAS opens to submit, to all my future colleagues who are submitting today I'm happy for you, and if you aren't submitting today or for even a couple of weeks, like myself, that's OK too

Started a note in my phone called "Good Things in Medicine" to document meaningful, happy, inspiring encounters with patients and in the hospital. Highly recommend

The way I reason thru UWorld/NBME questions now vs the beginning of 3rd year is kind of impressive, I am actually thinking like a doctor! I have acquired so much knowledge over the past year and I am so proud of myself because I really thought I was gonna flunk out of med school
Just to clarify, I'm applying to both because I actually love both. ObGyn is it's own separate application from ERAS now and it's WAY too much work and too costly to apply to Ob and Derm (+ a transitional year) just to be broad. Believe it or not they have many similarities.
Hey future doctors, struggling with a too long personal statement like myself? I tried ChatGPT to shorten it and I'm actually not disappointed with the results

Hi Med Twitter my name is Gabrielle Ivie, MS3. I haven't settled on a specialty, but I am definitely interested in Derm and ObGyn. I'm super passionate about supporting URMs, mentorship and DEI. I'm married and a mom and I'm excited to connect with my future peers!!
I've made a list of things to consider when picking a specialty
#MedTwitter
1. Inpatient or outpatient
2. Continuity of care or 1 and done
3. Procedures or medicine
4. Shift work, call, or regular 9-5
5. Mental health or physical health
6. Complex or straightforward management
Navigating through clinicals trying to make a good impression on residents and attendings, while trying to learn and grow as a doctor in training and while simultaneously tried to figure out what you want to do with your life is no easy task.
NMF scholarship for students with financial need who are taking or already took step 1 and/ or step 2 this year. All US allopathic medical schools and 13 Caribbean schools are included, deadline is October 16th to submit your application.

Hey future physicians applying for residency this cycle, what was harder for you, just pressing submit on your residency application or spending thousands of dollars on applications?

It feels good to be almost done with residency applications. Now for the seemingly impossible task of picking programs, all tips welcome

I caved, just paid for an AMA subscription for FREIDA access because unfortunately my program list isn't going to create itself.

Me and Sam Woolery had the same faculty mentor at WMed and since her passing our mentor met a friend of Sam's who's daughter was Sam's mentee. Well my mentor asked me to meet with the girl and after lunch and a tour we introduced her to an Associate Dean, just to say hello, and
Happy submission day to all my future colleagues!!! How are you celebrating after FINALLY submitting ERAS or ResidencyCAS?

Biden should now go nuts with the Exec Orders since he's not running. Declare election day a holiday. Free healthcare for all, immediately. Do any and everything he ever dreamed of. If the Republicans want to fight him in court, let them.
@gabbapentin_
OMG stahhpp, I cannot cry anymore lol. But really I'm so honored that we will be colleagues soon name twins and hopefully eventually degree twins to because I'm still trying to get an MPH lol
program at WMed next summer with a high liklihood of being published as an undergrad, which is so exciting for this future physician and my new mentee. The loss is still devastating and heartbreaking and I know I'm not Sam but I'll do my best to be a great mentor in Sam's place.
by the end of the day we started to work on getting her introduced to an attending at John's Hopkins (her current undergraduate institution), Velma Scantlebury and another person in Healthcare at John's Hopkins, in addition to setting her up to participate in the summer research
It’s going to be difficult in the coming weeks but I think clinicians should try hard to stay apolitical in the public sphere. We owe it to our patients.
The topic at Grand rounds today was using autologous blood clots for wound healing and I started thinking about the implications for scarring, especially in cosmetically sensitive areas, for cosmetic procedures and excision of cancerous lesions. Do I want to be a dermatologist 😮
Pfizer says it will price Covid treatment Paxlovid at $1,390 for a five-day course, which researchers estimate only costs Pfizer $13 to produce.
That's a 10,000%+ markup. Shameful.
@bbiebelberg
I'm not sure if this is specific to my institution, but basically, it's a 2 week 4th year elective, used to be 3, where you help support the third years on that rotation. I'll attend didactics and orientation, give a hospital tour, give a presentation, and be available to help
@itsmetheHBIC
No no, it actually did a good job at keeping my voice and my words, like it still sounded like I wrote it completely. But also that's why we edit after chat gpt does it's thing.
@Adrienne_PDavis
OK I'm glad I'm not the only one, plus I'm also thinking like is there a time-frame our experiences should fall into, especially for non trads like myself.
@CMBarbee_
Same girl, and I'm really struggling to narrow it down, I thought I struggled with AMCAS, now at least half of the experiences I can address happened in med school IDK what to do
@AllieFekete
Lmao I started working on my app last month when it opened and I got all the easy stuff done. Now I open it and just stare at the computer screen like someone turned off my brain
@medicine_made
GURL👀 I feel you on that, the struggle is so real in surgery because it's sooooooooo easy to mess up or make a bad impression 😮💨, like you don't want to break the sterile field or pass out or have to use the restroom mid procedure or pump, it's impossible to not be stressed😰
@_maryamameen_
Thanks Soror, just my kidney punishing me for not drinking enough water, but I'm all good and home from the hospital. But good luck and Pink Tea Roses to you 💚💗
@Alexandra_MS4
Why is it so hard? And all my letter writers keep asking for a draft and I'm trying but I legit can't even start and it's so frustrating lol
@StudentDocMaddi
I was inspired and made a really good list of hobbies just to realize I'm limited to 300 characters for that section. The struggle is so real
@itsmetheHBIC
Oooo girl it works, and you can be specific about the word or character count you want, it'll also proofread and even give feedback. Highly recommend, then tweak and add back anything missing that you feel is necessary
@gabbapentin_
Thanks girly, I'm home and baby girl is still cooking, just a little kidney acting up, little pyelo and a stone no biggie. You're literally the sweetest
