Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich is being held in Russia on patently absurd charges. As his friends & colleagues, we demand his immediate release.
Great to see this banner at Arsenal tonight in support of Evan Gershkovich, the
@WSJ
journalist arrested in Russia on absurd trumped-up charges. Evan is a massive Gooner. Hope he is back home safely, soon.

for those in Maine, Evan's alma mater
@BowdoinCollege
is hosting a panel on Evan's plight & the global fight for press freedom tomorrow (Tues) evening. details here:
Last night, friends of Evan's unfurled a banner calling for his release at the Mets-Yankees game. Today marked 11 weeks since he was unjustly arrested.

Last week, Evan’s parents traveled to Moscow to briefly catch a glimpse of him in a courtroom. “Any parent who loves their kid would travel to the end of the world to be with them for five minutes,” his mother said.

In this letter to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, 301 journalists who've reported in Russia—from 1964 to just a few weeks ago—demand Evan’s release:

Russian prison monitors visited
@evangershkovich
in prison today.
He's in "quarantine," but he has a TV with 20 Russian channels and is reading Vasily Grossman's epic novel Life and Fate. "During the visit, he was cheerful and we joked a lot."
A judge denied Evan's appeal to end his pretrial detention this morning. He'll remain detained until August 30, under patently bogus charges.

We’re in the Moscow courtroom where Evan Gershkovich is appealing the extension of his pre-trial detention. It’s 12 weeks since the Wall Street Journal reporter was arrested in Russia and charged with espionage. He & his employer vehemently deny the charge.
Yesterday, the U.S. House of Representatives voted *unanimously* (422-0, something practically unheard of!) to pass a resolution calling for Evan's immediate release, as well as that of Paul Whelan.
this morning, the
@PressClubDC
named Evan as a recipient of its highest honor for press freedom, the John Aubuchon award, something he richly deserves.
“He actually is passionate about Russia, about Russians, about the country’s history. It goes beyond what a typical journalist does for their beat.” –
@georgikantchev
on Evan's dedication to his work
Evan "always understands Russia with an extreme amount of insight and nuance and depth... That’s what makes this all so painful because he really cares so much about what is happening in the country.” –
@polinaivanovva
:
"After Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Evan had bravely volunteered to return to Russia, a country that he had reported on for years, to show how it was changing in the wake of an unjust war."
