Former Member of Vic Parliament. Still passionate about reasonable policy on drugs, justice, climate, secularism, reproductive rights & civil liberties
Religious conservatives in the US have been working diligently for decades to achieve this outcome and now they have their prize. Those same forces are working in AUS and we cannot let them gain a foothold. We must match their diligence in defending our

After a wonderful 8 years in Parliament I’d like to congratulate the successful candidates for Northern Metropolitan Region & indeed all successful candidates in the Victorian election.
Sadly I wont be joining them in the 60th Parliament but I do have some homework for them …
The computer calculation for the Upper House Northern Metropolitan Region has been completed. Provisional successful candidates are available here

After eight years of working alongside Adem, I can say these priorities reflect his time in office perfectly. Serving his own interests and personal vendettas above the needs of the community. If he wins, Victoria has 4 years of this to look forward to…
By the end of the year, every government secondary and specialist school student will have a free, secular and qualified mental health practitioner on campus.
We're doing it a year earlier than planned, and it'll make finding support so much easier for Victorian kids.
This year, yet again, each week a woman is murdered by her partner or former partner. Why does THAT statistic barely get a mention in this federal election campaign?
#auspol
Upper house has just debated my motion to replace the Lord's Prayer with a moment of silent reflection. During debate, A/G Jaclyn Symes announced that if re-elected, a Labor Gvmt will find an inclusive alternative at beginning of next Parliament. A welcome commitment!
#springst
Interesting watching the NSW pressers. Hazzard & Perrottet still justifying actions citing ‘the health advice’, which they don’t release. Vic now releases because of pandemic legislation. 1st health advice tabled in Parl 3 days ago but some still not happy. Will they ever be?
The Australian Christian Lobby say that the Lord's Prayer in Parliament is a "reminder that all authority is subject to God." I say that replacing it with a moment of silent reflection is a reminder that we are there to serve the people of Victoria, from all beliefs.
#springst
Apparently the Australian Christian Lobby is encouraging their mob to complete this survey on Australian perceptions of abortion to skew the results. I wouldn't want to do that but here is the survey if you are interested in providing your thoughts
Last day in the office for a little while. Feeling good & confident I will be back on the hustings in a couple of weeks thanks to some amazing health professionals. See you on the other side! 😘

Shame that the current leaders of the Liberal Party are focussed on fear mongering rather than actual providing actual evidence.

The most saddening aspect of this case is that the outcome is not surprising. It's why our justice system does not work for victims of sexual assault. Our justice systems need to be more accessible, trauma-informed, & less adversarial for victims of crime.
Remind me where is Dutton on far right extremist groups like

Dis he refuse them entry when he was minister? ASIO states that far right extremism is the major threat in Australia

I’ve been supportive of measures put in place by the Vic Govt to keep our community safe. But on the 5km rule the Premier & I disagree. Leading epidemiologists are also questioning its effectiveness. The curfew has gone & now it’s time for the 5km rule to go as well.

Next week I will present a Bill to the Victorian Parliament to decriminalise all drugs. This is about treating drug use as a health issue, not a criminal one. We need education & treatment, not prison.
#springst
Just a quick ABC interview at the airport (without coffee) A young woman sitting next to me asked if abortions were legal in Aus. I said yes and explained what I had been talking about. She burst into tears. It’s illegal where she’s from and she is really worried she is pregnant.
📺 The Pandemic Management Bill goes much further for transparency and accountability than every other jurisdiction in the country. Some people seem to want no health response to Covid, but that is not an option. Here are some highlights of my second reading speech. 👇

I am incredibly proud that the Victorian Parliament will today pass laws which protect LGBTIQ+ teachers and students from discrimination in religious schools. There's no such things as some being more equal than others. This Bill is long overdue. 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️

It was an absolute privilege working alongside Andrew Denton on Victoria's Voluntary Assisted Dying laws. He sent me this lovely message and honestly it leaves me speechless. 🥰
Vale Uncle Jack Charles. We have lost a legend. I was so proud to stand with him when we delivered the report into spent convictions. His personal story was incredibly powerful and we could not have achieved this change without him. He leaves an enormous legacy. 🖤💛❤️
Our bodies. Our choices.
I’m tired of racist, misogynistic bigots attacking our hard-won rights. These types of candidates can’t be trusted with your vote.
I stand against religious extremists. I stand for choice & equality. I stand with you.

Never made 'honorable' in parl but this is pretty good.. 'Fiona Patten has been recognised with an honourable mention by the McKinnon Prize Shortlisting Committee for her significant achievements and impact over her parliamentary career.'

There is much unfinished business that I am still passionate about and will continue to advocate for.
I’ll pick myself up (after a bit of rest, recovery, and a short course of chemo) and will continue to fight for decent change, in one way or another as I always have.
For everyone who like me is being reminded of their sexual assault experiences look after yourselves.

talking about restrictions in NSW. She doesn’t need a state of emergency nor does she have to go to parliament. her govt can make all sorts of restrictive rules and I don’t hear much outcry about it

BIG NEWS! The age of young people leaving foster care will be extended to 21 from 1st Jan, 2021! We fought hard for this and figures in the state budget show Gov are committed. All other states and territories should now follow Vic’s lead!

I remember the audible gasp at the commission when Pell said "it wasn't of much interest to me." The victims of Ridsdale's crimes now know what they always suspected, Pell knew of the abuse as early as the 1970s.

welcome to Northern Metropolitan, one of the most progressive areas in the state. Can I ask what you think is centrist/moderate about criminalising abortion??
EVERY Saturday these nufties block Bourke street and stop 2 major tram lines for a couple of hours. Many find their senseless chants and drums intimidating. I don't know what the answer is but it is not fair to the CBD businesses and people wanting to come into the city.

Since Portugal decriminalised drug use in 2001 — overdoses, HIV infections & drug-related crime have all steadily decreased. 46 other jurisdictions around the world have learned from Portugal's experience & taken a similar approach, why can't VIC?

If only to annoy Babet please can we get rid of prayers in parliament! They are not in line with our secular society and constitution. Nor are they reflective of our diverse communities and parliaments
No, Australia is not a Christian nation, and the sooner we rid parliament of religion, the better.
Our constitution separates church and state for a very good reason. Ralph Babet should read it.

this is completely disingenuous and misrepresenting what the motion says. If MPs currently say the lord's prayer, they can continue to do so, and anyone else from a different faith or no faith can participate. Let us pray, or not, in silence.
While the result is disappointing for me, it has been such an uplifting, enlightening privilege to serve the voters of this vast and diverse electorate, and to have achieved progressive change. I certainly won’t die wondering.
I'm extremely proud and humbled to have chaired the first large-scale review of Victorian sex work laws since 1985.
The report has now been delivered. Decrim will lead to far better outcomes. We have a huge opportunity to become a world leader with our sex work laws.

Not-so-fun fact: Blasphemy is still a crime in Victoria. I know, right?! Tomorrow I will table a Bill to abolish Blasphemy in Victoria - finally. We don't need this archaic relic which gives preferential treatment to Christianity over all other religions.
I also call on the next parliament to hold the government to account & respond to three landmark inquiries that I chaired which attracted significant community interest.
The Inquiry into the Criminal Justice System
The Inquiry into the Cannabis Use
The Inquiry into Homelessness
If I am successful in gaining a third term, I will introduce new legislation to broaden public health system access to abortion & contraception within 100 days. My media release here. 👇
