In English we say “Dear Mr./Ms./Mrs./Dr.” because we’re conditioned to think of people in terms of gender or status. In Irish we say “A chara” because interactions, even with strangers, are rooted in the assumption of friendship. Gaeilge > Béarla

The European Commission Code of Conduct forbids becoming a lobbyist 18 months after serving as a Commissioner to restrict conflicts of interest. It is too often ignored, but sets a good example, perhaps public service broadcasters/media should have a similar rule about politics?
