New article from me on Hegemonic Constituent Power and Irish reunification published by Global Constitutionalism.
It may be of interest to scholars of

As an Irish person in the UK, I consume media from both countries. Currently, it’s like living in two separate worlds: one is in lock-down, warning people that it’s the biggest crisis in living memory; the other is saying to just wash your hands, it’ll be fine.

I've just seen a video of the aftermath of the bombing of the ambulance convoy and at this stage, I have lost all hope for humanity.
I am disgusted that people are still defending this.
If law allows this, what is the point?
The ironic thing is that Joe Lycett is not the comic in all of this; he's the straight man looking at all the chaos around him thinking WTF while everybody else plays the farcical part assigned to them.
@BarristerSecret
Every time a barrister says “my learned friend” the judges all have to say raise their glasses, say “my learned friend” and have to take a drink of their beer. The last judge to do this has to drink a shot as a forfeit.

I am a reader at a Russell Group university. I have a secure job. I am one of the lucky ones. And I can expect to retire on a pension of 12.8k per year. My pension is being cut by over 40%. This is completely indefensible.
The Moon-shaped resort in Dubai is set to simulate conditions on the surface of the Moon, so visitors can “travel” to the Moon without leaving Earth’s gravity. This $5 billion project is being built by Canadian company Moon World Resorts.
It’s so weird. The UK feels like the people who climb to the top of the Empire State Building to welcome the aliens in Independence Day. Meanwhile, the rest of the world is jammed into their cars, trying to get out of town.

Staff at Birmingham Law School had permission withdrawn to host an event on the legal situation in Palestine on the basis that the advertising flier contained 'watermelon emojis'.
How is this act of censorship compliant with the Higher Education (Freedom of Speech) Act 2023?
The worst thing about the

There are no people called Earl in Ireland because the name was banned by the native Irish in 1607. All men called Earl had to leave Ireland in an event that became known as "The flight of the Earls".

So Shamima Begum may have been unlawfully stripped of her citizenship but we won’t know this until her case goes to a full hearing but she’s not allowed into the country so this full hearing can take place and this makes sense because?
There is something wrong with a democracy when a shadily funded think-tank calls for the suspension of people from public bodies, a government minister makes similar calls, the public body duly obliges, and then the think-tank's spokesperson is invited on TV to discuss the issue.
"This is not about freedom of speech...it's about suitability to serve on a public committee"
Policy Exchange's Iain Mansfield says academics that the Science Sec. describes as having 'extremist views' should not be advising on public bodies

The manner in which Ursula von der Leyen has exceeded the mandate of her unelected office this past week was striking. There's a good case to be made now that her position is untenable.

The EU will be tripling its humanitarian aid for vulnerable civilians in Gaza and the wider region.
We will redouble efforts to ensure this support reaches those who need it.
The fact that UK university bosses think that students are more concerned about being able to attend a graduation ceremony rather than the actual substantive content of their degree tells you everything you need to know about the contempt they have for both students and staff.
"intentionally using starvation of civilians as a method of warfare by depriving them of objects indispensable to their survival, including wilfully impeding relief supplies as provided for under the Geneva Conventions" is a war crime.

Given how right wing media in the UK frames immigration as an 'invasion' or, for some unknown reason, seems to have it in for Meghan Markle, it is interesting to note that proscribed neo-Nazi organisation Sonnenkrieg Division thinks Prince Harry is a 'race traitor'.
Things I never thought I'd see in my life: Leo Varadkar being lambasted by British politicians and the media as a zealous Irish republican hell-bent on unification at any cost on the basis of the most tepid of takes.
I have resigned my position as an External Examiner at QUB School of Law due to the attacks on the USS Pension Scheme being carried out by UUK, and UCEA's failure to make any substantial movement on UCU's Four Fights at the time of an acute cost of living crisis.

I know the Home Secretary inciting hatred is shocking and dangerous... but it is genuinely funny that everybody who knows anything about Northern Ireland assumed Suella Braverman was referring to the Orange Order, only for her to clarify that she was talking about Republicans.
The fact that Prospect Magazine had to change the picture for their article on

about taking the gun out of Irish politics forever is very poignant. But what it misses or downplays is the fact that the gun was very much a part of British politics too.
I'm pretty much done with heading back into the office on Monday and everybody ignoring the fact that some of us went on strike and others didn't. If you crossed a picket line, you should feel awkward; you should feel bad.
Barnier says that the UK will stay within European Human Rights laws and the ECHR.
Despite Tory promises to change this they have sold out again.
This is the worst possible sign for the final Brexit Deal.
The British media silence over the Troubles Legacy Bill today really is an absolute disgrace.
They are complicit in this utterly shameless attempt at avoiding accountability and suppressing the truth.

Amen. Far too many people think that rights are defended by asking nicely and simply persuading bosses of the merits of your case. As someone who had almost 40% of their pension stolen earlier this year for no reason whatsoever, I can tell you that this is untrue.
Has the UK ever tried nudging against terrorism or is it just suitable for minor emergencies like an epidemic that threatens to kill thousands?

A government minister has written to UKRI to investigate an academic because they accused Israel of genocide. This is a shameful attack on academic freedom and should worry everybody who cares about the state of democracy in the UK.
Human rights law says more about mandatory vaccination than it does about access to vaccines for people in developing countries. And that encapsulates what is wrong with human rights law.
Public lawyers (including myself) have wasted far too much time worrying about the legitimacy of judicial review and not enough time focusing on stronger, anti-democratic forces like central banks that make serious politicised decisions framed as technocratic exercises.
I’m looking forward to explaining what a reader is to people for the next couple of years. My understanding is that it’s not quite a senior lecturer; definitely not quite a full professor.
It’s like the academic equivalent of brunch but without the bottomless Mimosas.
If the test for whether a united Ireland would be a welcoming place for unionists is whether the RIC and other British state agents are commemorated, what does that say about NI being a welcoming place for nationalists? Eg, does the NI state commemorate the Easter Rising?
It's Monday morning and the first day of a new working week. And my employer expects me to be productive despite the fact they stole over £430,000 from me.

Interesting constitutional law fact: people who do not swear fealty will not have consented to any laws in effect in the UK and so are free to do whatever they like.
Walking out from a speaker whose views you find offensive is also a form of expression! To frame this as some kind of threat to freedom of expression is just complete nonsense.

I've been on strike since 2018 over cuts to my pension because the scheme was in so much trouble that it now has *checks notes* a surplus of £7.6bn. Journalists, please do your job and hold university managers to account for the unnecessary disruption they've caused to students.
Wow! Monitoring figures for 31 March 2023 drop from

One of most depressing things about UK academia is that students, staff and management should all be on the same side. instead, management are breaking staff, ruining students' experience and then expecting the government to listen to their pleas for better funding.
In Finucane v UK, the European Court of Human Rights found that the UK had breached Article 2 (right to life) by not holding an adequate inquiry into Pat Finucane's murder.
Finucane v UK was decided in 2003-- 17 years ago.

This is repeating the mistake of the 1st referendum: asking the people to decide an issue rather than asking them to affirm or reject a decision that has already been taken. The latter is how Ireland approaches referendums. You get the best of deliberative and popular democracy.
