Regarding Judge Boulware rejecting the proposed UFC antitrust settlement: there was some dumping early on of $TKO stock shares but it bounced back by EOM.

There is a great article by Toshiaki Kawada, former All Japan champion-turned-ramen master, about his response to the image perpetuated about him as a Japanese version of Seinfeld's "Soup Nazi". Why Kawada's ramen shop is famous for its House Rules?

This match in PRIDE at the Tokyo Dome forever changed the history and direction of the MMA business.
It impacted the psychology of the UFC office. Dana lost his bet.
Management backstage exploded for PRIDE. Business divorces that would cause a permanent civil war.
Masahiro Chono says that New Japan should focus on gaining market share in Asia rather than focusing on America because AEW & WWE are deep-pocketed black ships.
Wally Yamaguchi, just like the late Don Arakawa, was *the* hustler (ref, booker, photog) in the Japanese fight business. Wally, JR, Paul Heyman, and Jim Cornette were the true glue guys who sacrificed to make everything work. Pro.
For those who follow the machinations of the MMA industry, especially commissions, there is going to be quite a story breaking on Saturday involving some high-profile regulator names and a cover-up regarding medical records...
Kawada's ramen shop has a cult following because the customer process reflects heavily on his personality. The same mentality that made him a famously stubborn and masochistic wrestler is what has created his iconoclastic image as a restaurateur with his own House Rules.

This match was from the WWF Mania 1994 Japan tour at Osaka Castle Hall.
The fans in Japan felt Yokozuna could kill Tenryu for real so Mean Gene had to lay it in extra thick to get the fans believing in him. The re-match a year later was a sad reminder of Yoko's dying future.
ABEMA (CyberAgent/Asahi) said they're overwhelmed by PPV buys for
#MutoFinal

They declared NOAH's Tokyo Dome event was their biggest wrestling box office. Record PPV, social, mass media numbers.
Muto changed the game with the G-1 & now with ABEMA.
This interview with Genichiro Tenryu & Katsuyori Shibata is very interesting and reveals some unknown news items. I will summarize them as best as I can. Details regarding New Japan, AEW, Chris Jericho, Shinsuke Nakamura, and the future. 1/x
Google Trends is indicating that interest in
#UFC300
is approximately 3 times higher than Wrestlemania XL last week, which did record numbers on Peacock.
Kawada instituted a policy of not having customers photograph him while he is in the kitchen working. If you want a picture with him, you have to buy a t-shirt. And he does photos in one setting in order to avoid start-and-stop interruptions for cooking. Efficiency is key.

I want to focus heavily on this internal UFC e-mail regarding the PRIDE asset purchase. I lived this story directly on the front lines when Ed Fishman, Dick Clark's business partner, put up a very legitimate offer. He made an incredible offer contingent on due diligence. 1/x
Email between Zuffa officials and their attorneys on not skipping due diligence in order to acquire Pride so that no one else can do so. Honestly, one of the more damning pieces of evidence regarding their intent.
Kawada notes how 80% of new ramen shops close within 3 years. He opened a ramen shop, wrote a book about the restaurant business, and released it right before the COVID lockdowns hit. It burnished his lifelong image as a masochist, fully stubborn and determined to succeed.
2/x
Kawada's ramen shop, classified as a "celebrity ramen" spot, gained headlines for its House Rules. Customers must state in advance how many ramen orders they want before entering. He wants ramen orders in order to avoid non-ramen orders involving cheap side dishes/desserts.

You're about to find out what the online MMA fan base has been arguing about for years with UFC: the more the profits grow, the less most of the talent gets paid in proportion to company growth.
And I would fully expect tight arbitration clauses in new deals.
WWE is fucking crazy if they fumble first Mercedes Monè and now Drew Galloway because of money issues.
For a company worth billion dollars, why are they not paying their top guys/women properly?
In order to prevent frequent start-and-stop picture interruptions in his ramen shop, Kawada is increasing the frequency of fan meet-and-greet sessions at his ramen shop. There are different themed events with different dishes to match the occasions.

This Power Slap live stream is a big deal for Rumble. They have been really aggressive in grabbing content creators and tying up with Dana White and UFC is exactly the kind of digital footprint they needed for awareness. Fits right into their political & cultural vibe.
Kawada said he instituted the ramen order requirement in order to speed up customer service and increase turnout. He noted this is a very different strategy from other ramen shops that rely on the psychology of long waiting lines in order to create an image of high demand.

This is why $TKO is becoming a full-fledged government contractor w/ UFC & WWE events. Politicians can buy off voters with events & not leave fingerprints like an ugly stadium rotting 20 years later.
It's also why people need to wake up on the Texas "trade secrets" lawsuit NOW.
Paul Levesque at the press conference says he'll be looking heavily into Italy, hinting at a PLE in the future there.
He mentions London Mayor Sadiq Khan's re-election. Levesque says, "We should talk."
Katsuyori Shibata said that his stint in America taught him to do what you love in wrestling and to keep moving forward. He indicated that AEW was his big chance to wrestle again but as far as wrestling again in New Japan, it seems uncertain. END
Gavin Newsom's athletic commission in San Francisco, during their December 9th hearing to license Power Slap, asked if this could sell out the Staples Center.
A UFC gag order waiver? Liquidated damages? Signed by fighters under economic duress with one party exerting a disparate amount of adhesive power? Signed by fighters without having an attorney present?
Over the last 30 days, I've literally called every step UFC was about to do.
It's because they were required to sign a document which says that they can lose their whole purse and bonuses if they say anything negative about the COVID protocols.
The value of photography in fight sport is unparalleled. It's why you should always put a premium on those who do it best. Like
@allelbows
. The photo magazine culture built the Japanese scene. If you can't sell the visual, you have nothing as a promoter.
I think a lot of people are misreading the room regarding Chatri, ONE, and Japan.
We are dramatically seeing a sea change in the MMA landscape regarding attitudes toward Japan. This is being spear-headed by the "Japanese Jordan Breen", Yuji Kitano at ABEMA.
Let me explain...
In a Saturday morning post attributed on Facebook to James Krause, the post claims that Mr. Krause is allegedly $5 million in debt but that it's real estate-based & that he is supposedly involved in a "real estate coaching group."
Was there a gambling inquiry or not? Closed?
When Katsuyori Shibata had his fateful match with Kazuchika Okada in 2017, Mr. Shibata revealed he had been counting down the days before retiring from wrestling. After the severe injury, it re-ignited his desire to get back into wrestling shape by pushing training boundaries.
Another complication of Katsuyori Shibata's hematoma & craniotomy was loss of physical strength. He lost his power doing basic dojo exercises like using his knees for push-ups. It has taken him several years of training & rehabilitation to gain core strength back against all odds
When Mr. Tenryu retired, he was so happy to stop training. Mr. Muto and Mr. Kobashi are built different.
Two knee replacements. Possible hip replacement due to over-exertion. The recovery time and pain from knee replacements is punishing, especially if leg bone is shaved.
Earlier today at The MMA Draw newsletter site, I wrote about how Texas is hiding details on UFC & WWE contracts to taxpayers. One of their defenses is that the info would be "intimate and highly embarrassing."
Politicians buy these deals because it's buying access. See: Missouri
Nobody in "the media" has stopped Dana, even after the Cabo slap. Who's left in "the media" that's adversarial to UFC? The $ is dried up. With the antitrust settlement, everyone is hitting the exits.
This is why a rebuilding of reader-oriented MMA coverage is so important.
Dana White talks his complete hatred for the media these days.

Before the proliferation of PPV in the US, Japan was the gateway for a lot of dream matches with American wrestlers that you never contemplated would face each other. 1985 All Japan was the apex.
What financial institution or analyst has specifically tagged a $650M valuation on Power Slap?
What financial institution or analyst has specifically projected a $1B valuation on Power Slap?
Is $TKO making these assertions? Whose assertions are they?
I don't care what anyone says -- Dana White and company absolutely executed what they wanted to accomplish with this Power Slap live event on Rumble. Even though the event was longer than 3 1/2 hours, the showrunning was super tight and the kind of UFC format you expect. 2/x
In the Number interview with Mr. Tenryu & Mr. Shibata, Shibata said that he had an 18% chance of survival after his craniotomy in 2017. He lost a lot of his vision in his right eye and has recovered some of it back through painful electrotherapeutic (current/shock) therapy. 2/x

The Power Slap live stream on Rumble just ended. At its peak, there were about 195,000 live viewers. The stream itself was flawless in terms of production and processing.
I will thread this post with several personal observations coming out of this spectacle. 1/x
Michael Bisping is currently commentating the Power Slap final on Rumble. To no surprise, it's drawing some views...
I've repeatedly said that Dana views Rumble as his version of Spike TV. TBS was simply his launching point to jump start Rumble...
When the Florida boxing commission says they have health and safety protocols in place to regulate UFC for coronavirus, they're lying.
Florida hasn't had a meeting since October 2019, over six months ago. They haven't updated rules/regs or protocols.
By far the biggest news few, if any, in the sports media have read - let alone understand.
The Endeavor python is rapidly and quickly consuming as much as possible to create a closed loop with total creative control and isolate any challengers. Executed with precision.
The biggest financial story in combat sports unfolded this week... and you're not hearing any of the regular commentators talking about it. G-1 talk faded for New Japan quickly...
If a 20% drop is a bear market, what's a 50% YOY drop? The stock casino is cruel.

Prepare for the biggest game of chicken in combat sports (UFC, Top Rank, ACs) over the next year on coronavirus. Promoters shifting liability for fighters testing positive to ACs. ACs using plausible deniability & assumption of risk as lawsuit defenses. Fighters with no recourse.
I am reading what is supposedly the waiver fighters at UFC 249 signed for coronavirus liability.
It is extraordinary in length, exhaustive in legal theories, and incredibly overwhelming for me to process.
There is no way someone could understand all of this in minutes or hours.
Lost in the Jon Jones/USADA "snitching" story: a huge $ conflict of interest for Jeff Novitzky. He's working for UFC while his fiancee is a *current* Federal agent. Novitzky's old Fed contacts still exist. He has capability to weaponize the Feds, yes? Kind of a big deal, no?
The influence of RINGS is highly underrated when we talk about Japanese MMA. UWF had the bigger crowds and the flash but RINGS was Maeda as a purist -- technically brilliant, occasionally sloppy, sometimes shockingly violent, but never boring.
Nigel McGuinness mentioned Volk Han during Bryan Danielson vs. Zack Sabre Jr. match.
Volk Han often used wrist holding techniques in his matches. For sure, that's a name I'd like to hear more often.

I'm watching this interview with Fumi Saito and writing down notes/quotes from this. The topics are about Marigold, Stardom, Rossy Ogawa, and of course the comments made by Kenny Omega and what the reaction has been in Japan. At the end of the thread, I'll add my own notes. 1/x
Katsuyori Shibata credits relocating to Los Angeles as a big reason why he was able to make the recovery he has (so far). He was able to get away from noise/judgment from others. Mr. Tenryu joked that Mr. Shibata trained the LA dojo gaijin wrestlers harder than the Japanese dojo.
Tenryu brought up Chris Jericho's name and Shibata said that he was definitely interested in wrestling him. Mr. Tenryu mentioned how aggressive Jericho is as a wrestler. The prospects of Shibata wrestling Shinsuke Nakamura are very limited unless New Japan pays WWE to book it.
It is the 30th anniversary of the famous Mitsuharu Misawa vs. Toshiaki Kawada triple crown match at Nippon Budokan in Tokyo.
The semi-main event was Stan Hansen vs. Kenta Kobashi.
The undercard featured The Destroyer's final match and emotional retirement ceremony.
Boxing referees Wayne Hedgpeth. Raul Caiz Jr. & Sr have filed a $100M racial discrimination claim against the California State Athletic Commission, arguing Jack Reiss has supposedly benefited from alleged discrimination by Andy Foster.
This is an enormous story on so many levels for ONE, Chatri, Takeru, Yuji Kitano, U-NEXT (Tokyo Broadcasting), and TV-Asahi.

Last year, I rambled about $TKO morphing into a government contractor. The reaction was either crickets or skepticism. Now everyone says it.
Then I said they would package fight weeks with these deals. Right on cue.
Now they're suing to seal the deals. Stop falling asleep here.
Re: Kenny Omega's comments on Rossy Ogawa.

After watching the US version of Forbidden Door, I watched the Japanese version. The difference in story telling was noticeable. One ex: the Japanese team pushing hard that Punk was using Tenzan's Anaconda Vice on Kojima. A very heelish cue to focus on. Murata saw it pronto.
BREAKING: America's largest egg producers and industry groups illegally rigged the market to drive up the price of eggs, a jury has found.
Their price-fixing scheme included exporting millions of eggs overseas to drive up U.S. prices around Thanksgiving and Easter.
In the last 6 months, $WBD stock is down 40%. The NBA turmoil, combined with rumors of tying up with CBS, renting new sports programming, and concerns about content quality has absolutely changed the negotiating environment. I suspect AEW remains with WBD but who knows the price?

the great Don Arakawa died (age 71). Arakawa was the consummate professional: comedian, socialite, hustler while bench pressing more than everyone. Guys like him made the fight business work. It's a lost art.
How did UFC navigate the issue of due diligence on the PRIDE asset transaction? They made the deal *first*, then hired Spectrum Gaming to produce a DD report *after* the fact. Nobody else could or would ever try this stunt. UFC did. Then everything fell apart and Sakakibara sued!
Distilling New Japan's problems down to "bad yen" is overgeneralizing the underlying problems for Bushiroad.
Their corporate offices are full of non-wrestling types who are burning the biggest markets with huge arena bookings. They emulate a lot of bad American business habits.
Want to give credit where it's due - Adam and Mike were one of the first to ring the bell regarding Yen vs Dollar and how that could affect the Japanese scene. Looking forward to listening
I called my shot on December 11, 2023 in an article about Mark Shapiro's UBS conf call & what Endeavor's direction would be in 2024.
This is why I still write -- not because I'm smarter than you but in hopes that everyone reading this starts connecting the dots on their own.
UFC President Dana White states that we’ll start seeing WWE [PPVs] on Sunday’s:
“You’re gonna see Friday, Power Slap. Saturday, UFC. And Sunday, WWE. You’ll start seeing that stuff too.”
(UFC St. Louis post-fight press conference tonight)
In a Thursday night document dump, the California State Athletic Commission has revealed documents indicating top officials at the AC will support sanctioning Power Slap in the state of California.
Included in these endorsements is Andy Foster (EO) & neurologist Vernon Williams.
The biggest image problem for New Japan right now is that they can't keep top wrestlers from rivals. Hard to train talent, harder to buy new talent. Also, there is no deep connection to the judo, BJJ, karate, amateur wrestling, or Sumo worlds. The ghost of Inoki is haunting them.
I thought it would take two years before fans caught on to Ari Emanuel's game plan to convert UFC & WWE into government contractors. Once you understand the implications of it, it changes how you see your (loss of) power as a fan.
From my free article today at The MMA Draw:
I'm sick of media types portraying labor as being greedy and selfish for not making complete & total concessions monetarily, legally, or medically in the name of games to satiate a television or gambling habit.
MLBPA isn't going to forfeit all their rights like UFC fighters.
It's not simply Bushiroad losing Ospreay and Okada -- they're losing more and more talent in both New Japan & Stardom.
This isn't "low balling" -- this is a combination of disgruntled talent with matchmaking and the August stock crash. Wrestling doesn't make enough $ to save it.
Losing Ospreay and Okada at the same time is going to leave a huge void in New Japan. It's like being kicked in the balls, being helped to your feet and then kicked in the balls again. Going to be awfully big shoes to fill.
When someone tells you who and what they are, believe them. Signs from UFC & WWE aren't merely a crisis of confidence. UFC = giant debt bomb. Media distributors, like Netflix & DAZN, are debt bombs w/ inflated contracts. Advertising is cratering. Radio's crushed. Bonds are drying
This lawsuit against TKO alleges that Endeavor already had an inside track to UFC + WWE and that somehow the merger created less value than selling WWE on open market.
Not only was the merger a powerful & compelling deal, they avoided taxes with Reverse Morris Trust.
Complaint for the new WWE shareholder lawsuit from Bloomberg here.
Pension fund is suing Vince McMahon and named individuals (Nick Khan, Riddick, Paul Levesque, Koonin, Barrios, Wilson) who were members of WWE's board when Vince forced back into WWE.
It's a race to the bottom between AEW and New Japan regarding total mismanagement and blunders.
Why is a promotion whose key demo is DINK, under 40, urban, and highly Democrat continuing to run suburbs and rural areas? If you're for the "sickos" then book Korakuen like GCW.
Bushiroad is facing some difficult decisions about the next 12 months for their wrestling operations, particularly in regards to booking foreign talent and the yo-yo'ing of the Yen.
Nothing I saw from

indicates that New Japan will experience dramatic growth soon.
