9 February 2002. The Queen’s sister, Princess Margaret (right), died (aged 71). She had suffered a stroke. A Buckingham Palace statement said: “The Queen’s beloved sister, Princess Margaret, died peacefully in her sleep this morning at 6:30 AM in the King Edward VII Hospital.”

9 February 1997. Hamilton-born Brian Connolly, flamboyant lead singer of 1970s glam-rock band Sweet, died. He was 51 (not 52 as stated in his Daily Mail obituary). Sweet’s biggest hits were Blockbuster, Hellraiser, Co-Co, Little Willy, Ballroom Blitz, and Wig Wam Bam.

9 February 1972. Paul McCartney’s new group “Wings” made their concert debut, with a performance at Nottingham University. This impromptu debut gig took place in the Portland Ballroom at midday and customers only paid 40 pence.
