Right I have gone through the latest 20mph data for Wales and have made this video. However, I know many of you prefer a thread so I've done that as well. Long story short, 20mph seems to be working VERY well and is already paying for itself. [Thread]

Peaceful, calm & not bothered by the rain. This week's action is a great demonstration that a little effort from @DevonCC & @DC_Police will help the Trial make the streets of Heavitree & Whipton safe & quiet. Lots of local support again today ❤️

Thursday morning, day 4 session 1. The quietest start yet, the 2 people that have already offered support are far quieter than the people taking it out. #SafeStreetsNow

Perfect. Small child, balance bike, quiet streets. In first 8 weeks of Active Streets Trial, traffic actually increased by 170 cars/day on street they're joining. If persists that needs attention. You don't remove scheme because of issue. You learn & improve so all benefit.

And in Heavitree & Whipton, 25% of households have no access to private car. Yet those who claim to speak for 'working class' oppose.... bus lanes bus gates safer streets bike lanes But want more cars everywhere, which favours those already with choice & £

@EXE1940339 @ExeterUrbanist @DevonLiveNews 1 in 6 households in EX postcodes don’t have a car (Census 2021) Households with lower incomes (in bottom quintile) are 4.5 times more likely to be a zero car household than top quintile ( @HealthFdn ) So speaking up for those on lower income = supporting non-car travel networks

No doubt there are strong views on both sides as to if this is a good decision. The route to quiet, safe streets will always involve setbacks. The occasional scheme suspension gets lots of media. The drip- drip of successful schemes gets very little.

Fortunately threats like this don’t affect me much. But it’s obvious why we hear regularly at the #SafeStreetsNow action in Heavitree, Exeter that people are extremely supportive but to scared to say so, because of intimidation like David is pushing here.

We think SUDS/ rain gardens could be great at Heavitree Bridge/Honiton Rd/SBL area to relieve road surface flooding. Plenty of space, help the roads & sewers actually work in heavy rain & look great. That's the kind of 💩 issue we want our Cllrs to be interested in.

I was there today. The day that the LTN was removed, and I was present when a kid was clipped by a car on his scooter on Pretoria Road. It’s supposed to be a school street. He was in real pain - the scooter flipped round and smashed him in the ankle. I’m not sure how bad it was.

This is brilliant news. It works! As demonstrated already in Exeter, when you invest in safe streets you get lots more people walking, wheeling & cycling. We need to keep moving forward for our future generations, not backwards to enable more driving.
