I spent nearly eleven hours with the Spokane Fire Department’s Behavioral Response Unit, taking overdose and psychiatric calls on the streets of Spokane. It was incredibly enlightening.
Gabriel had overdosed 9 times before. After the 10th time, he decided: “I can’t do this anymore. I can’t do this anymore, I need help."

As I was concluding reporting for this piece, I followed up a final time with the city council members who had originally asked for this data, to find out if they’d received any numbers themselves.
Council Member Dillon responded quickly with a one word text: “Nope.”
‘Anecdotally, we’re seeing more dead people.’ Service providers, emergency responders, civil servants and politicians all agree: Spokane has an overdose crisis. But because of inadequate data collection, no one knows exactly how bad it is.

Hours after getting a fresh coat of paint, the Pride mural downtown was vandalized again. But the queer community and their allies are rallying around the flag, which is still bright on the pavement. "We're here. We’re not going anywhere," the artist said.

A few weeks ago, I had no clue about hospital consolidations. Now I know how dangerous they are. A teen I talked to said it best: “It’s one of those things where you don’t really realize it until you’re in a position where you need access. And by then, it’s kind of too late.”
