Great example of lava levees in bottom left. Notice how the lava is moving fastest in the middle of the channel? Lava at the margin slows, cools and solidifies to form levees that help contain the flowing lava. The levees are built up by overspills from the channel.

This really highlights the impact of volcanic ash fallout. It covers the ground like snow but is made of tiny bits of frozen magma. It's harmful to breathe, abrasive and dense. Failure to remove from roofs can result in collapse.

@ivadixit I just ordered a 'latte' in Italy. Everywhere in the UK this would get you a 'cafe latte'. In Italy they stare at you like you are a monster and then dump a jug of warm milk on your table. I should know this as I lived in Italy for two years. Oh well.

This is really unique footage. Study of old scoria cones indicates that this is a common process, particularly on slopes. The lava is denser than the material that makes up the cone and, once destabilised, the latter can float away on the former.

During large volcanic eruptions the ground can collapse into the underground magma reservoir. At Ischia this happened over 40 km². As it collapsed huge volumes of fractured rock were spat out along with magma to form these breccia deposits.

Wow. The spurting incandescent fountain is made of molten fragments of magma ('pyroclasts'). Some of them land on the black cone or roll down it and contribute to the cone's growth. Pyroclasts that land in the crater may coalesce back to a liquid and flow away as lava.

Our son picked up this #fossil horse tooth(?) in a stream near Durham, UK, yesterday. Anyone able to ID it, please? I think it might be a Pleistocene Equus? #paleontology #palaeontology #FossilFriday @NHM_London @NHM_Science @smithsonian @NMNH

Our MSci students are also conducting a gravity survey across the northern margin of the Long Valley caldera, site of the 760 ka Bishop Tuff supervolcano eruption, to try and work out what's under the ground. Thanks to Prof Basil Tikoff and @uwgeoscience for their support.

Beautifully illustrates how 'a'ā lava moves. As the hot interior is exposed to the air, it cools, partially soldifies and breaks into chunks that roll down the front and are buried as the lava advances.
