I think it’s time for me to have a personal/professional twitter as I transition into my role as an assistant professor! Really excited for this new journey!
#sciencetwitter
Went from not having a place to sit to having my own office! Feeling official with my name plate outside my office. catch me during office hours 🤓🤓

The support I have been flooded with this early from my fellow professors in my department has been such a breath of fresh air! I haven’t felt anything like this since I was an undergrad 🥲

I am learning that I have a bigger platform and more eyes watching me as an Assistant Professor especially being a black male in this space. It’s quite interesting
Giving a quick talk to some freshmen today about my research to get them interested in possibly joining my lab! Building this research army from the ground up! 🫡
#newPI
This transition from postdoc to faculty is probably the most exciting and stressful time of my life but I wouldn’t trade it for anything!

A liltte late with this one but life has been absolultely insane because the semester just started! But lets take a look back at my first day on campus 🤓

I got a chance to check out my new office space in the department and spent time talking to my office neighbor. Which reiterated that I made the right choice ☺️☺️ so excited to get things started

I may sound ambitious but I think I’ll have an army of undergrads but they will be in teams and each team has a different project and there will be team leads depending on seniority. It’s a bit of a social experiment on my part 🤓😈

I think everyone should take some time off before starting their big boy/girl job. It gives you time to slow down and reflect on the journey that got you there.
In all this summer downtime I have I’ve been taking each morning and writing a bit more of my book. It’s not only therapeutic to write about my scientific journey but I think it’s important for people to hear from black voices in science
I’m trying to plan out how will I spend this next month off before my start date. I might actually relax and do lots of hiking, finish writing the last chapter of my book and outline my next two publications 🤓

I would love to know her policies on STEM funding because year after year there seems to be less money in the pot. We need more stable funding or there will continue to be an academic crisis
I was visiting
@JMU
the other day just checking out the biology department and where my lab and office were going to be and got mistaken for a student twice 🤦🏾♂️I didn’t think I looked that young
If passed, students would no longer need to take economics, world history and geography. Requirements would also be wiped out for fine arts, foreign language and career and technical education.

I’m hoping I love being a PI and I know it’ll have it’s challenges but environment I’m going to is super supportive and I think that’s one of the most important aspects as an incoming PI
@j_marcellular
Mannn listen I think about this all the time! Like I’m the one who’s going to help jumpstart your career/future. I don’t feel adult enough for this!
Idk what it is but I’ve been having to force myself to leave the lab or my office cause I’m wrapped up in analyzing data or an experiment. Gotta remember to have that work/life balance!
#NewPI
My social life just saw a dramatic boost after moving close to the DMV again! I’ve hung out with more people than I ever had while in both of my postdocs combined!
You’re right there are no guaranteed job prospects but there needs to be better prospects for those who go through a postdoc because for many it’s a waste of time and it’s mainly the fault of the PI not being a “mentor”
Sorry, Dom. There are no “guaranteed job prospects” in any training program. Or in any career. Yes postdoc system needs overhauling, but let’s not promise the impossible.
There needs to be a complete overhaul of what we have defined as a postdoc because it’s outdated and they are treated like glorified PhD students with no guaranteed job prospects afterwards

@GLIA_Leadership
There’s a little bit of luck but for me when I did the in person interviews I was assessing the energy of the people in the department. I saw happiness in the department that I am currently in and that was one of the things I assessed cause it’s not the same everywhere.
@jmcin9
Will definitely be starting slow but as my lab grows I think this strategy will allow for me to have the biggest impact and the most production. I think we don’t give UG enough credit in their abilities to do lab work and run a project. Imma give mine the opportunity
@AusRob_PhD
@j_marcellular
You got a point there! I think I can be a bit more candid when it comes to grad school life and what are the options for life after too
@GLIA_Leadership
You’re correct however I’ve seen how in some places when new faculty come in they are thrown to the wolves and left on an island to fend for themselves. So it’s exciting to know I chose the opposite of that situation
@AdelitaMendoza7
I’m right there with ya! I’ve been so cheap during my transition, but I’m sure that budgeting skill that you’ve developed over the years is going to be a huge asset in the long run!
