Jen's husband, Averie and Miciah's dad, and Warren Con’s Superintendent. Striving to make the world a better place, one day at a time. NASSP Digital Principal.
I’m so grateful to
@WalledLkSchools
for this incredible opportunity. I’m excited to get started and to work with all of you to write the next chapter of our success story.
The Board of Education has chosen John Bernia, Ed.D. as Walled Lake Consolidated Schools’ new superintendent. Dr. Bernia and the Board will now begin contract negotiations.
Due to the forecasted inclement weather conditions and the potentially hazardous afternoon commute, ALL of Walled Lake Schools will be CLOSED on Wednesday, January 25. After school events and activities are canceled.
Due to icy roads, windy conditions, and cold temperatures,
@WalledLkSchools
are closed today.
Our team will assess conditions and make a decision about evening events by noon today.
Enjoy an early start to your winter break!
The Board of Education has officially appointed Dr. John Bernia as Walled Lake Consolidated School District’s new Superintendent. His first day will be on Monday, October 17th 💙

I understand the snow day banter is part of the culture of our district.
I am not afraid to hear different perspectives.
However, all of us represent Walled Lake. Let’s be sure to do it correctly, and in a manner we can all be proud of.
For the last time, I was a guest reader in Averie’s class today, something that’s been an annual tradition since preschool. Talk about a bittersweet moment.
“At the end of the day, all we’re going to have is memories. You gotta make memories.”
After a successful presentation this afternoon, I’m proud to report I am now
@DrBernia
!
So grateful to my supportive family, and the
@OUSEHS
faculty. When you have great people around you, if you stay patient, and never give up, you can reach your goals.
Today concluded my time in Warren Consolidated Schools. Serving as their Chief Academic Officer was one of the great honors of my lifetime.
To the staff, students, and community - thank you for allowing me to be part of your lives, and thank you for being part of my life.
At this point, the snow is winding down and road crews are hard at work. Our team has been out on the roads and we’re monitoring conditions.
Please plan for school tomorrow. I will be up very early to assess everything once more and will keep you all posted.
A very Happy Birthday to my daughter Miciah.
She is a force of nature. When she sets her mind to something, she does it, and is not afraid to stand up for what she believes in. Truly, she is one of the most determined people I’ve met.
The world needs more people like her.
Leading up to 5th grade camp, the zip line has been a big stress point for Averie Bernia.
These pictures are a lesson for all of us to put one foot in front of the other and face our fears.
I take pride in the milestones and her many accomplishments, but I’m most proud of the person she’s growing up to be. The world could truly use more people like her.
Happy Birthday to one of the people I love the most, Averie Bernia.
If only she didn’t grow up so fast.
Happy

Go and vote today. Take your children along so they can learn about the process. Make sure to tell them, citizenship is not only a right, it’s a responsibility.
I appreciate all of the questions. I am monitoring the conditions closely, but at this point, it appears we will have school tomorrow. If anything changes, I will be sure to let you know.
My grandfather lost his mother at a young age and didn’t have a permanent home for most of his childhood. This experience taught him family was the greatest gift.
He taught me to cook and told me “Sundays are for family. We eat, we laugh.”
This picture would make him happy.
Our marching band from
@WLCentralHS
and
@WLWWARRIORS
represented our district in a first-class manner. I’m so proud of not only their performance, but how they conduct themselves.
Appreciate the invitation this morning.
I’m thrilled to introduce you all to Ernie Harwell Bernia, the newest addition to our family.
His older sister Sparky Lou, also pictured, is less than enthused at this moment.
Kind, strong, determined, happy, and, from time to time, a little loud.
I hope all of you can find someone in your lives who brings you the true joy that Averie and Miciah bring to me.
Happy Father’s Day.
On my 4th day on the job, I found the best part about being superintendent of schools - visiting our buildings! Thanks to
@Banksmiddle
and
@WixomEl
for hosting me this afternoon.
Here’s your moment of levity, courtesy of Averie Bernia:
“Hey Dad, what’s a witch’s favorite subject?”
“No idea, what?”
“Spelling. Get it? They put spells on people!”
A proud Dad moment, celebrating Averie’s success in Kindergarten.
Keep perspective. There will be other meetings, but moments in the life of your children are irreplaceable.
Two years ago, the world lost Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna, and 7 others.
This tragedy did raise awareness of the importance of being a
#girldad
.
Today’s a good day to remember how important that role is. Strong, independent women change the world.
1. Be the professional you want for your own children.
2. Do a great job of doing your job.
3. Participate in the process to build a “world class school district.”
We’re going to win.
@JoeBiden
- Excellent decision, Mr. Vice President.
@KamalaHarris
- Congratulations, and thank you, Senator. Dads like me count on leaders like you.
Averie and Miciah - take note. It’s possible.
“Family is everything.” ~ my Grandpa
“Work hard. Take care of your family.” ~ my Dad
Being a Dad is far and away the most important, and best job in the world. I’m grateful every day for my girls.

None of us are alone.
None of us are perfect.
None of us are experts in all phases of our professional game.
We don’t have to be.
Our strength is our team.
It was fantastic to get out of the office this morning and be a “Mystery Reader” in the classes of two of my favorite people. So grateful to
@HamlinHawks13
for the opportunity.
Kindness and empathy are universal.
There’s not much that is better than coming in to the office and finding welcome cards from
@MarkHess98
and the students at
@GuestElementary
. Thank you for the kind welcome to the district!
I’m inspired by the enthusiasm of the multiple people who posted “first day in a new role” messages today
As someone who is long past that “first day,” I’d offer this advice:
Listen. Then listen. Then listen some more. Start with what’s necessary, then move to what’s possible.
What a beautiful day to kickoff the school year. Many thanks to our Board President, Alumni Speakers, and
@ImAlexWeber
for their support and inspiration.
In the spirit of
@StormyKromer
- “be a caretaker of a legend.”
What an awesome day welcoming back staff at our Opening Day Celebration! Thank you to the alumni who joined us for a panel and Alex Weber for reminding us that we are unstoppable! 💙

My parents lived during a time when legislation was signed to ensure black women had the right to vote.
My daughters live in a time when the Vice President, a black female, presided over the vote to name a black woman to the Supreme Court.
Thanks
@panerabread
for hosting our “catch up breakfast the morning after Dad has a school board meeting.”
Lessons learned:
Mystery readers read too fast.
Art is fun, you make stuff.
Playgrounds are better when it’s warm.
In a crisis, we start by stabilizing our adults. Students follow the lead of their teachers. Stable, confident adults are good for kids.
The indecision and rhetoric of our leaders are making an uncertain time even more unstable.
Our leaders must lead.
We enjoyed our time at Viewfest! Grateful for the invitation, and for the kind welcome from so many community members. I was so impressed with the outstanding community partners and the fun activities.
On Veteran’s Day, I think about my Grandpa, who entered the US Army in 1942 and was assigned to Eisenhower's HQ Company. His experience taught him many life lessons, which he passed on to me. I miss him every day.
As leaders, today is a reminder of why we do what we do. Education is the strongest tool to preserve our country and is our greatest weapon against terrorism.
A very happy birthday to the kindest person I’ve ever known, Averie Bernia.
My wish for everyone is to have someone in your life who inspires you as much as she inspires me.
Big myth - the “innovation” must come from the leader. As leaders, our role is most often to create the environment where innovation can take place.
#PrinLeaderChat
An incredible morning, as our staff hit the streets to talk about our summer programs and connect with our students and families.
As we turn a corner in our fight against the pandemic, we cannot wait to welcome everyone back!
All week, I’ve been asked about my favorite Thanksgiving side dish. It’s hard to beat the cranberries, a recipe from my Uncle Karl. This year, prepared by my daughter Averie.
From my family to yours, a very Happy Thanksgiving.
Had a wonderful morning with our friends from
@WOH4L
as they hosted Viewfest 2023 at
@detroitzoo
to raise awareness of the importance of mental health.
Success is a product of putting the work in.
“Whether your passion is sports or business, science or the arts, realize that your skills are directly linked to the consistency and persistence of your practice.” ~

Eliminate Sunday night blues with a simple centering activity.
Start a document, make 3 columns:
Last week - what did you accomplish last week?
This week - what do you need to be ready for this week?
Next week - what is on your calendar that you need to start thinking about?
What an incredible evening - Vision met reality, and generations of children will benefit from an amazing learning space.
Congratulations to our Board, our leadership team, our long time partners, and our community on a special achievement.
An exciting new chapter has begun at Dublin Elementary and tonight we made it official with a ribbon cutting! Thank you to everyone in the community for making this a reality! 💙
