I tell my grads and undergrads that reading instruction kinda stops in middle school. By the time they start college, they have no reading strategies from teachers. So I give them Casey Boyle's blog on ethical reading. Many students respond "Ohhhhhhhhhh!"

Attended a workshop on writing across disciplines. Someone said seniors don’t know how to write in science and suggested an intro class to scientific writing instead of FYW. And I replied “maybe the problem is your program doesn’t have a robust writing curriculum.” Crickets.

Teach a few things well rather than a lot of things poorly. Advice from being an education major I think about often. Some of us assign a bunch of reading that gets surface level engagement from students and, tbqh, from you as the instructor. Pick one thing you can read deeply.

Fall semester was AI-lite. Spring semester I'm digging in with lessons on generative AI as writing assistant sprinkled across each unit. Every assignment except one has a generative AI option with reflection on what's learned or what motivates them to use AI at the end.

I myself get anxiety when I’m asked to pay for my own travel and hotel. Early career faculty in particular may feel pressure to accept the arrangement because it gets them closer to tenure/promotion. If you want them to come please cover hotel/travel upfront. 🙏🏾
It's not okay to offer funding where the recipient uses their own money first and is reimbursed later. This barrier puts serious pressure on those in less privileged positions. Many struggle (silently) or lose out completely. Reduce inequity by offering resources up front.

Anyway, I assign one or two readings and they do social annotation in reading teams, because no one reads in isolation anyway. For me, transforming the conversation with an author into problem solving and critical insights matter more than 600 pages in a semester.

This bill now goes to the Senate.
