Good point. As you probably know I did a blog about the so called “best in the West”. Subsequently other media sources fact checked. Ofsted and others should be asking about how motivated to read are children in England (clue 42nd out of about 60 in PIRLS)
How can Ofsted be taken seriously when they write guff like this? 1.Uncritically perpetuating the myth of ‘best readers’ without acknowledging significant caveats is naive. 2. Celebration of the performance of ‘disadvantaged’ children again without context is deeply disturbing!

@charliehacking and I sense change is in the air. 13 years of synthetic phonics may have bought some benefits but teachers are eager to be released to use their professionalism. And thank you Michael, yes we have proposed a new eveidence-based approach.

So true. @charliehacking and I present our new theory, the research evidence and the practice of using real books in
SSP can be taught without decodables. Teach too many low frequency GPCs. Little Wandle teaches 45 GPCs that account for just 1.60% of phonically regular words in 1,500+ real books. Same with RWInc. Pupils spend too long on decodables instead of reading real books for pleasure.
