Award-winning natural history writer. 45+ books, articles in many publications. Birds, insects, travel. Latest book: "A Year of Garden Bees and Bugs" March 2024

As a local of Dorset, what I would like in the county is an MP who does their research properly and does not condone wildlife crime. And yes, I would like eagles, too.
Excitedly announcing arrival of this book, with wonderful illustrations by
@SarahEdmondsArt
. My first book on conservation. Gulp! Available mid-April.
The winner of this year’s Dilys Breese Medal is Dominic Couzens, a prolific author, broadcaster and naturalist whose work has championed our work and, vitally, encouraged people to become citizen scientists themselves. Congratulations

The UK is expected to see a record number of bugs this autumn. An appropriate time, then, to re-share the country's most disliked creepy crawlies:
Spiders: 22%
Wasps: 19%
Cockroaches: 18%
Mosquitos: 11%
Slugs/snails: 6%
Flies: 4%
Earwigs: 4%
Moths: 3%
WARNING: shortly after having the AZ vaccine I saw my first Firecrest of the year. It has now come to my attention that others have had a similar experience with the same bird. Chris Whitty says it might be an "uptick". Take care out there.
Hey, Twitter conservationists, what's your "favourite" preventable annoyance in the environment? e.g. disposable barbecues, netting to stop nesting birds, balloon releases, weed spraying etc.

Let's measure the immediate future in bird song. Robins and Wrens are singing now. Song and Mistle Thrushes start territorial singing any day. In c40 DAYS, Blue & Great Tits and many others begin in earnest. It isn't long!

Insane in the New Forest with
@naturetrektours
today. Lesser Spotted Woodpecker drumming, calling and flying in treetops, point-blank Firecrest, Crossbill you can almost touch, flyover Hawfinch, Merlin, Marsh Tits, Woodlark, lots of Treecreepers, 2 Redstarts. Gushing bird song..
So exciting... the first time of holding my new Garden Birds book with
@DominicCouzens
in my hands! 😍
Publication day is the 29th June. 😀
Perfect for identifying the 75 species most likely to be seen in your UK & North West Europe garden & to learn all about them! 🐦😀
I have been birding on Longham Lakes, Dorset, for 18 years now, and today was the first time that a Great Northern Diver graced its waters, bringing joy in its wake for me and quite a few others.

@DorsetBirdClub
Took teenage son for walk in New Forest this afternoon. Great view of Dartford Warbler and then a superb male Hen Harrier floating over the heathland. Still buzzing!
Today I went to see 2 Mistle Thrushes near my home. They were clearly protecting their long term berry source. There were some annoying birds stealing some of their provisions. I asked the identity of the interlopers and they are apparently called Waxwings.
@DorsetBirdClub
Wonderful to hear my first Blackbird of the year singing this evening. This glorious melody will be with us from now (occasionally), from February incessantly, lifting our spirits throughout the spring. An early birthday present for me.
Hoping to find Whinchat today so went to Martin Down. Delighted to find it was chat heaven, with a small gathering. Checked each one: Stonechat, then Stonechat, Stonechat, Stonechat, Stonechat, Stonechat, Stonechat, Stonechat and finally - Stonechat. It was a no-Whin situation.
Today I treated myself to a search for a local rarity, a Ferruginous Duck. Arrived and to my horror the relevant lake was surrounded by 8 foot high fence, no way to look through, very frustrating. Then what should turn up? A birder with a stepladder. Yes, really. Bird seen.
This is one of the most exciting birds to see in all of Africa, the Shoebill. Saw this a couple of days ago, and incredible creature that eats Lungfish and others of similar size

Have to say, it feels very odd seeing an article about yourself in your favourite bird mag, but thank you so much
@BirdWatchingMag
It's been a real pleasure to write for you for the last 29 years!
@polyolbion
The Big Garden Birdwatch is coming this weekend. If you are fairly new to birdwatching, this guide is really ideal for you. It has lots of tips, a few star facts about each bird and - the photos are by none other than

Good to see my book "A Bird a Day" in Waterstones this afternoon. Enjoyed a good furtive total rearrangement of natural history section to make sure it was the most prominent.
At Lodmoor, Dorset, this morning.
Me: "There's a buildup of Mediterranean Gulls here today. I counted 111."
Woman wearing RSPB top: "I don't believe you."
Me: "No really, I counted them..."
Woman: "There are Black-headed Gulls down there..."
Great to start guiding again, with just 5 clients, social distancing and no scopes. New Forest amazing, with Honey Buzz, Goshawk, LS Woodpecker, Wood Lark, Redstart, 7 Hawfinch, Crossbill, Dartford, Firecrest, the lot!
Really proud of this beautiful book out today and available imminently. Had to learn a lot about trees to write it! Lots of info and special facts as well as ID. Extraordinary photos by the multitalented
@gailashton
who also co-wrote. Mainly for beginners.
@JB_Publishing
Just spent three hours in the muddy fields of Dorset looking for some Bean Geese. Not a Bean. It poured with rain. I'm soaked. But to be outside! Came home on a high.
It's publication day!!! 😀🎉
Very exciting! 😍
Available in all good bookshops, Amazon, Waterstones, WHSmith, NHBS etc..
Learn about the birds that visit your garden & how to identify them. 😀
Everyone with a passing interest in birds should have this book!
Please RT! 🙏🐦
I had a hundred and one things to do today, lots of priorities. Then I got a text about a Whiskered Tern at Longham Lakes, Dorset, my local patch. I now have 101 things still to do...
I always love Midsomer Murders, but a Wigeon calling inland in June? Habitat didn't look perfect for Little Grebe, but the male Lesser Spotted Woodpecker was nice.

@Natures_Voice
I have never seen a Ross's Gull. So today I made the pilgrimage to Radipole Lake RSPB, Dorset, and after a delightful three hours am happy to say that I have maintained that proud record.

You’re very talented in many ways. Your way of using your photography and connecting with people is unique. Sorry to hear you so discouraged
Today's huge treat in the New Forest was 30 mins in the close company of a foraging Lesser Spotted Woodpecker. Great views of Crossbill, Firecrest, Dartford W, and not bad of Honey Buzzard, Hobby and Goshawk. Day trip for
@naturetrektours
The New Forest was kind today, with marvellous encounter with drumming Lesser Spotted Woodpecker a highlight for the bird song workshop for
@naturetrektours
. Also 8 Hawfinches (some perched), Crossbill, Dartford W, 1 Goshawk, loads of Redstarts, Cuckoo (easy one!), Firecrest etc
My first CUCKOO in song in the New Forest today. Also great views of Hawfinch and Firecrest, plus Marsh Tit singing, Crossbill flying over, one brief peeping call from Lesser Spotted Woodpecker.
@naturetrektours
In a flash of creative seasonal brilliance, I suddenly thought "Why not post a picture of a Robin in the snow?" Bet nobody else has thought of this. (Non-UK Twitter will be confused, apologies, just ignore!)
If HS2 is 330 miles, and affects 693 classified local wildlife sites, that's one every half mile! It's also one SSSI every 10 miles and a nature reserve every 10 miles. Question: Did planners for HS2 deliberately target wildlife areas as "easy" to develop?

Sunday book review: A Bird a Day by
@DominicCouzens
This is an attractive book to look at and an interesting one to read. It would make a very good Christmas present for just about anyone who is interested in birds, whatever their level of knowledge.
Great to write about a conservation success story in the latest
@Natures_Voice
magazine. Spoonbills are very much part of the march of the long-legged wading birds into Britain, our second "Glorious Revolution."
Today I heard a Grey Wagtail flying over and was surprised to see that it had lost its tail. For once, it was entirely reasonable to call it a Grey Wag.
With the
#BigGardenBirdwatch
approaching, my Garden Birds book with
@DominicCouzens
will help you identify the birds that might visit!

I didn't see this post, but I came in and bought a book this afternoon. Good to have a chat. I also signed some books, so hopefully the day improved a little bit at least.
Guiding this morning for somebody's birthday present. This was her unexpected gift, a wonderful Rose-coloured Starling. We also saw a Puffin at Portland, an eclectic combination if ever there was one. Photo: John Charman.
Delighted this afternoon to near a Linnet singing. Not much, perhaps a little hesitant, but typically rambling and giving the impression that it's under the influence. (Photo from Crossley Guide).
A blasting, cold wind at Keyhaven and the New Forest for
@naturetrektours
didn't stop us seeing 96 species. Peregrine trying to steal from Sparrowhawk, two Cuckoos chasing in a field, plus superb close Hawfinches and Firecrest, Avocet, Sanderling, Little Tern, Redstart, Eider.
Slightly updated version of this book is coming out in a week or two. Worth getting just for the cover, eh? Immensely proud of this publication.

Fantastic to hear both Woodlark and Skylark in full song yesterday at Morden Bog, Dorset. Many people think that Skylarks disappear in winter, but they are still around and will sing on mild days. Also 10 Crossbills.

📢⚖️ European Justice has just ruled and confirms that the trapping of birds using glue sticks must be banned in France! The culmination of a long fight.💪 Congratulations,

The Mountain Gorillas of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest are one of the things I have most wanted to see in the world. Almost unbearably emotional for me, but this guy couldn't care less.

HUGE NEWS: After 25 years of tireless campaigning, we're thrilled to announce the closure of industrial sandeel fishing in the English North Sea! 🎉
This is a big win for seabirds like Puffins & Kittiwakes.
Thank you to all our supporters who made their voices heard 💙
William Hague in the Telegraph 8 June: "And no one should think that our own age will in future be regarded as the highest point of human morality. I am convinced that generations to come will regard our abuse and degradation of the natural world as little short of barbarism."
One of Africa's largest eagles is the Martial Eagle, which will quite happily carry off monkeys and other large prey. This one is from Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda, right by the roadside.

You might call it eclectic at Arne, Dorset, this morning. Top sightings were Dartford Warbler, Whimbrel, Siskin and Lesser Whitethroat - birds of heath, saltmarsh, coniferous woods and tall scrub respectively.
Jays are good value in UK at the moment. They are seeking acorns all day long to secrete away in their territories, as emergency rations for winter. A single bird may store 3000.
Almost standing room only at Lake Hornborga, Sweden today. Cranes, Whooper Swans, also Barnacle Goose, Pintail, White-fronted Goose, White-tailed Eagle, Great Grey Shrike, Smew...

Cold, grey and blustery at Dancing Ledge, Dorset, but who cares when Puffins ride the waves and a pair of Peregrines make a mockery of the gusting winds?
