The GCSE in Natural History was formally announced this evening in the magnificent Natural History Museum. And these 2 legends were stalwarts and fellow travellers. Tim Oates from
@ocrexams
and
@CarolineLucas
. 😄😃😀
And finally, it is being announced as definite on Thursday (also World Curlew Day!) - a GCSE purely on studying natural history in the UK and how it relates to the rest of the world. Field skills, ID, connection to nature. Some good news. Only took 11 years of campaigning!
A new GCSE in Natural History—pioneered by
@curlewcalls
&
@CarolineLucas
—is close to realisation, designed to “teach teenagers abt specific organisms, field observation skills, conservation & how nature has influenced art & culture.” Thoughts?
Results just published. Irish breeding curlews on the way out, now down to 105 pairs across whole country. In the 1980’s there were over 5000 pairs. They have just gone from County Cork. Heartbreaking regional extinction on our watch

Today I start a new role, Chair of the new, DEFRA supported, Curlew Recovery Partnership England. We are a roundtable of 9 organisations who will work together to turn it around for curlews, their landscapes and associated wildlife.
The fire that engulfed 2.4 km sq of Darwen Moor at the weekend had ≈ 6 curlew nests. There were also breeding golden plover and short eared owls. From a local - "Hearing the pitiful cries of the adults as their broods were engulfed by the fire ☹…all due to one disposable BBQ!"
So, this scrap of woodland squashed between houses and the hospital in central Bristol is to become an 8 storey building. It’s my patch of wild, my soul food in the city. We cannot ever leave anything to just be what it is. Just trees. So angry, so sad.
@uhbwNHS
High emotion today from those of us who think nature deserves far better. After a re-awakening of an appreciation of nature, a desire for deeper engagement, it has slipped right down the greasy pole of politics and off the radar, drowned out by loud voice of money-is-everything.
Nothing but nothing is safe from those whose lives are defined by making money through destruction. The Wash is precious beyond words. We don’t need a marina, cruise ships and a barrage on one of the best wader habitats in Europe. It’s priceless.
David Gray on
#Winterwatch
last night. See the emotion and commitment to all of nature not just curlews. True passion comes from inside, it can't be painted onto the surface. 🙏
@DavidGray
for being Curlew Action's patron and please consider supporting us
Just popping back on to share the beautiful albino curlew that has once again returned to its wintering ground in Co Clare, Ireland. Same spot each year. Breeds in the NE of England I think. Can anyone confirm that?
Putting HS2 through ancient woodland is like HS2 through Oxbridge colleges - hundreds of years of growth, deep knowledge and connection. We wouldn't accept rebuilding the colleges a few miles away as compensation for gaining 20 minutes on a train journey.
An abandoned field in W Yorkshire became home to nesting curlews, lapwings and a barn owl. Now developers have it for 500 homes. Until wildlife has a value, it is death by a thousand cuts. Photo
@richbunce
It's back on the breeding ground - seen for the last 4 years at least after spending the winter in Ireland. what a beauty. Who couldn't love an albino curlew.
Happy World Curlew Day everyone. Today is for celebrating these beautiful birds across the globe. Holding on to them will be a measure of who we are. And if you can sponsor my walk 👍👍 thank you 🙏
Warms the heart. The farmer in this field in Gloucestershire saw curlew chicks in the grass. He stopped mowing and put them in his cab. They are now radio tagged and
@WWTSlimbridge
curlew team are watching them. Thank you farmer, thank you
@KaneBrides
@Dan_Gornall
& Mike smart.
Nature is there for you when you breathe fresh air, drink clean water, eat good food. It is there when you need comfort, exhilaration, wonder and awe. Be there for nature now as the threats intensify in the name of economic growth. Human flourishing depends on the natural world.
I can understand the sugar rush associated with planting trees because we are all so scared about climate change, but this cannot be the answer. This is a cash crop not a woodland. Who doesn't love woodlands. Most of us want to see them expand across the country - but not this.
On International Women’s Day a big shout out to the wonder that is
@CarolineLucas
. In a political world of combat and insult she shines through with grace.
@CarolineLucas
Hello
@Siobhan_Baillie
please can you remove your point 2 from the campaigning list below, unless you successfully campaigned for a different GCSE In Natural History? I don't think we have ever met. Thank you.
#GCSENaturalHistory
After Bristol City Council sprayed our area with poison they returned to scape off any vestige of green. A few streets away, flowers still hold on. But, the only house with swifts has scaffolding up to block their nest hole. I cried at the side of the road
@BristolCouncil
The GCSE in Natural History has stalled in the Minister for School's office (
@NickGibbUK
) for 18 months. Please email him and ask why the delay? Please tell him you think it is vital we teach the next generation about nature. Draft text here:
It was an honour to meet
@CarolineLucas
today to talk about the possibility of a GCSE in Natural History. Re-engage young people with the natural world and teach them to name, record and monitor nature as well as learn about the history and culture of nature in society.
I am hopeful now a GCSE in Natural History will happen. And can you imagine the text book - inspiring, rich and full of wonder, written by the best in science, art, music, literature. It will be a joy to have, and why shouldn’t education be beautiful?
#GCSENatHist
What I've learned over the past years working on the conservation of Curlew and other wildlife is that only landscape scale restoration of the UK will stop terminal decline. We cannot save Britain's wildlife through fencing off an area and ignoring the rest. Change will ...
This is my response to the Guardian article on why the Restore Nature Now march didn't get media attention. I don't agree with the reasons given, so here is a thread explaining why I think it didn't hit the headlines. 🧵 1/12
This is why we need a GCSE in Natural History - now. If we don't know we don't know how to care. We have to teach the next generation about the life that lives around us. Plantwatch: What is that wildflower? And why don't we know?
Enough
@Siobhan_Baillie
. You did not create a GCSE in Natural History, nor win the fight for it. This is an insult to those of us who worked so hard to make this a reality. Post-truth, alternative-fact, utter fabrication.

Just received the breeding curlew report from part of Shropshire. 100 nests, only one nest produced chicks. "Virtually the whole breeding population failed again." Please support me and Curlew Action to help those helping curlews:

I love this street-art lynx in the centre of Bristol, painted by

Last Christmas these bright people couldn't name a goldfinch, sparrow or long-tailed tit. Tomorrow we are going to see Robin Walker, the Minister for Schools, to try to persuade him to say yes to a GCSE in Natural History. Wish us luck.
@educationgovuk
First lapwing nest found in Gloucestershire (that I know of). Such a barren place to lay 4 delicate eggs. Wishing you all the luck in the world, lapwings. Fly high.
Feeling angry and upset about the world, how it’s designed around systems and institutions not fit for purpose, where humanity and wildlife are drained of joy, and then someone puts this bold statement on the side of a city building, and suddenly you don’t feel so alone.
Santiago de Compostela cathedral, the end point of the pilgrimage known as the Camino Francés, 790 km of Journey with a capital J. Hard to say how it feels right now, but what I do know is that whatever journey you are on, I sincerely wish you -Buen Camino.
This was a nesting site for 2 pairs of curlews in Wales (only around 300 pairs left) also prime feeding site for Golden Plover, Lapwing, Woodcock, Snipe and Jack Snipe. Open landscapes falling to forestry everywhere. Open land matters too, and the wildlife it supports.
“Every child is born a naturalist. His eyes are, by nature, open to the glories of the stars, the beauty of the flowers, and the mystery of life.” Ritu Ghatourey. Seeing Minister for Schools on Tuesday (hope not postponed again) re GCSE in Natural History. Send positive vibes.
The prime minister is resigning, climate protests take off, extinction sweeps the planet, but this beautiful
#curlew
patiently awaits her eggs to hatch - any day now. There is something so deeply grounding about the constancy of the cycle of life.
The need for a GCSE in Natural History discussed on
@BBCCountryfile
last night. Do enough of us know how to name, monitor, record and collect data about wildlife? Do we understand how species interact with each other and ourselves? I think this is essential.
#GCSENatHistory
These wonderfully expressive and watery curlews were painted by Polish children. they will soon be in France with a letter asking the government to ban the shooting of waders in the winter. Young people are taking the lead.
30-35 pairs of curlews in Severn and Avon vales have produced 3 chicks this year. Weather, predation and grass-cutting. Can’t do much about weather but the other two can be tackled. It’s why the
@curlewrecovery
exists.
There has been so much interest since the GCSE was announced last Thursday. Thanks to everyone who sent such supportive messages. A society that loves and works for nature would change so much. GCSE IN NATURAL HISTORY CONFIRMED

One of the first pieces of 'nature art' from 1502, a photographic study of a young hare in a non-photographic time. Beautiful, accurate, detailed - it even has its own character. How did he do it?
Bad news. A known curlew nest has been mown over for silage. Farmer was concerned about dry weather. What to do? Work with them to find a solution next year or throw law book? Not in an ag scheme. Farming for cheap dairy and wildlife can be a tragic mix.
From now on, ground nesting birds are settling down on eggs. Please, if you are walking with your dog around fields and moors, keep your dog on the path. Birds scared off their nest leave the eggs vulnerable to predation. Thank you.

Sometimes lovely things happen. On a cold and dull January day, when the world seems scary and closed, I get a beautiful, hand drawn card in the post. And thank you for your inspiring work on swifts
@JonathanMPomroy
For the life of me I don’t understand why you would strim a pedestrianised street full of wildflowers. This is central Bristol, my street, someone who doesn’t live on it has strimmed it, and I’m furious. How can you object to grasses and flowers in a city?
@BristolCouncil
Delighted to have been awarded the Marsh Award for Wetland Conservation, to be presented by WWT in October. Very, very chuffed and honoured! Thank you. And here where the captive-reared curlews were released this year in Slimbridge.

I have just seen a wolf crossing the road in eastern Poland. A real, live wolf. I was so excited I didn’t take a photo, but the memory will stay with me forever. 🐺amazing world, fantastic animals.
We need corridors of greenery throughout our cities, leading to fully functioning wider natural areas around urbanisation. Access to nature is a right, not a privilege. BBC News - Millions 'lack access' to parks and green spaces
There are 130 curlew nests left in S Ireland following a 97% decline since the 1980’s (97%!!) Just heard one was abandoned yesterday due to turf cutting. Others lost this year to predation as COVID stopped fieldwork. They will go on our watch. Silage, turf, forestry, predation...
A somewhat grudging, late and indirect apology - but moving on...THANK YOU everyone for your support, that meant a huge amount.
Time to announce something much more positive!
A 'nature pathway'. See 🧵below...
My article in the Nov/Dec edition of British Wildlife on ecological grief. We must talk about it. Working with constant loss, “is damaging, it is real, it is tangible and it hurts.”

Update on Darwen moor fire: Broods lost: 6 Curlew, 5 Golden Plover, 2 Short-eared Owl, 1 Snipe , ca70 Grouse , 45 Skylark & c160 Meadow Pipit plus the odd Stonechat, Linnet, Grasshopper Warbler brood. The 2 lads with BBQ are being questioned by Police. 📷Thanx Steve Martin
Am I being a misery by taking exception to this? Coloured nylon ribbons strewn over a beautiful hawthorn. Do the NHS really want this? Tell me if I’m being a Victoria Meldrew.
Very sad to learn that Robin Prytherch, a legend in the bird world and a delightful man, died today. It was a privilege to spend time with him looking at buzzards for my new book. I have known him for years from BBC days. Rest in peace dear Robin.
"Curlews are utterly beautiful and are now rare. I have never knowingly seen or more importantly heard one. I want my children to. The beauty of this world needs care" Comment on appeal page. Please support producing a 'Toolkit' for those who want to help:
More disturbing reports coming in of fields being cut whilst ground nesting birds have young chicks. Know of 3 different places now where curlew chicks have been mown down. We need effective, flexible,agri schemes NOW. The birds can’t wait.

Just listening to a talk on Spoon-billed Sandpipers, the most charismatic and beautiful of creatures - down to fewer than 300 adults. This world is a cruel and desperate place for wild waders. Thank you
@waderquest
for all you do.
Over 30 headstarted curlews (raised in captivity then released) are now flying free in Shropshire - for 3rd year running. Huge congrats to

This curlew nest is on a golf course! The female is off the nest while a fence is put round it to protect it. Golfers play very near by. Thanks to the club for looking after it. It looks so vulnerable.

St Beuno was a 6th C preacher who blessed curlews and asked that their nest be protected. A beautiful tale of sacredness merging with nature on the west coast of Wales. This is the small chapel where he used to retreat to pray - feast day is April 21st - World Curlew Day! 😇
With the legendary and lovely Belted Galloway breeder, Helen Ryman, on Mochram Estate, Galloway. As we talked the first curlews of the year flew in. There are around 12 pairs -thank you Helen for looking after them. 90% decline in Dumfries and Galloway.
@MochrumBelties
Here is a beautiful Polish curlew, looking lonely, which is no surprise, there are only 200 pairs left in the whole country. Thank you to the brilliant Polish team who came to the European Curlew Workshop - and for sending the photo. Let's get together and help them.
