Dear friends, While plans are still being finalized, CCL’s major event this December 5-6 will be a special endeavor, the Silver Anniversary Celebration overlooking San Francisco Bay. I am sending this “reserve the date” notice earlier than usual because attendance must be capped at 200. There will be a small registration fee, and plenty of hotel rooms available for those who need to spend Friday night, particularly those of you flying in. Confirmed speakers besides yours truly are David Bahnsen, Joe Boot, Jerry Bowyer, Brian Mattson, and Jeffery Ventrella. We’re waiting for confirmation from one other speaker. There will be, as always, superb food. The tentative theme is “Christian Culture: Now More Than Ever.” If you want to lock in your reservation, please contact me privately. I do expect spots to fill up quickly. If you’ve never attended a CCL event before, this would be one to start with. Finally, we’re encouraging sharper teenagers and young adults to attend: 14 to 18 year-olds and college and seminary students. There will be grants for qualified registrants.

A little appreciated fact disclosed in Revelation 12 is that the fierce persecution of the saints isn’t a Satanic victory but defeat. When Christ in his redemptive work expelled him and his angels from heaven, he deprived Satan of his cosmic range and limited his activity to earth. This deprivation infuriates Satan, who takes out his frustration with God on the saints. So if you’re persecuted today, rejoice. You’re living proof of Satan’s failure and defeat.

Three approaches to in-group criticism: 1. We should criticize our tribe less, because we need to win. 2. We should criticize both tribes equally, because we need to be fair. 3. We should criticize our tribe more, because we need to show integrity.

I do know his views quite well, and don’t agree with a number of them, but I’m not ready to write off everybody who’s theologically mistaken, even severely mistaken. I’ve benefited from the writings of Dawson, Pannenberg, Sowell, Tarnas, Cullmann, Ridderbos, Dooyeweerd, Spykman, Hart, Kaiser, Montgomery and hundreds of others, despite my sharp disagreements.

“The Kingdom Rule of God is not something we humans manufacture, but is the presence of shalom Jesus Christ brought, brings, and will establish in God‘s world among those who trust and follow his lead. The satisfying peace the Spirit of Jesus Christ brings into our daily activities, like kissing your spouse, meeting a friend at Tim Hortons, comforting a person who is crying inside, making a modest, wise policy decision in your company – that is ‘Kingdom of God’ activity when we are offering Jesus Christ’s formative grace to a fellow human being, quietly practiced like vulnerable children (cf. Matthew 5:8); that is ruling in the historical style of Jesus.” Calvin Seerveld

The attitude of some churches about remunerating the minister, “Lord, you keep him humble, and we’ll keep him poor” is antinomian poppycock. The Bible requires the minister of the Word be given “double honor” (payment). The minister’s generous salary is the first and towering financial obligation of the church. Gut the missions program, capital improvements, debt retirement, and AWANA outreach before you impair the minister’s salary. Pay him generously, and expect God‘s blessing. Take care of God‘s man, and God will take care of you.

It is a mark of a faithful pastor that his firm rebuke of sin is accompanied by the tender assurance of forgiveness to all who repent. Lancing the poison of sin should always be accompanied by gently binding the wound.
