I got my first Penetration Tester job mainly because I had strong networking / sysadmin experience with some preventative & Blue Team experience. At that time I had my CEH and CPT, but NO"real-world" hacking experience but all my certs and other experience put me over.
So you want to do cybersecurity?
1. Have a strong skill related to information technology ie. networking, system admin, code, etc.
2. Learn how to do that securely
3. Learn to defend, detect, respond to attacks on it.
3. Do not focus solely on "ethical hacking".

You really expect people to take 30-35% pay cuts, but expecting them to do the level of work they did in previous roles is crazy.
A lot of these layoffs are because of greed.
