In April 1945, Minister Haššík offered Fr. Tiso to take him to safety. This escape worked, given that Haššík died in Ohio in 1985 despite a death sentence in 1947.
However, Tiso refused because he was ordained to be a Martyr of the defense of Christianity against Bolshevism.

It is worth noting that during Italy’s Golden Age (1922 –1943), Catholic Action collaborated with Fascist police to monitor the beaches and remove all immodesty. Pope Pius XI insisted on this even when other matters (such as threats against Catholic schools) were more pressing.

In 1951, Bishop Ján Vojtaššák (a 73-year old man!) was unjustly condemned by Bolsheviks to prison. There he was subjected to inhumane treatment, indeed, torture. He died shortly after his release from prison, on 4 August 1965. Death to Bolsheviks and eternal reward to Martyr Ján!

Here is Pope Pius XII’s letter to Fr. Tiso upon the latter’s election as the president of the Slovak State on 26/X/1939. The Latin original with an English translation.
Pius XII held Fr. Tiso in high esteem, but worried that if he became president, even the slightest failure of the Slovak State would be blamed on the Church.
In any event, neither he nor any Slovak bishop prohibited Fr. Tiso from accepting the presidency.

A sad anniversary. On the 21st of September 1944, partisan vermin massacred 187 civilians, mostly ethnic Germans, in the Slovak village Sklené (Glaserhau). Catholic priest Josef Pöss barely escaped death that day. He gave testimony about the mass murder.
