@GuyClaxton Great stuff Guy. Totally agree. So let's start listening to young people and give them time and space and support (if asked for!) to find and follow their questions, purposes, concerns, interests, passions.

@TeachandProsper @savoy_girl @naomicfisher Let's ask them. Good idea! In fact let's listen to their views on school and education in general - and then take some notice of what they say. I sometimes work in Nordic countries where there are national school student's organisations that have a say in policy making.

@TeachandProsper @23Miriel @naomicfisher It wouldn't be a bad idea to ask them would it?...and about school and education in general.

@skiffleandrag @naomicfisher @_MissingTheMark Lovely poem Jess - thank you - made my heart sing!! You and Naomi are so right. The school slogan should read "YOU ARE EXCEPTIONAL - ENJOY IT"

@naomicfisher We all agree that most kids want an orderly and safe school. So why don't we give those kids a voice and share behaviour policies and decisions with them as part of teaching about democracy and the rule of law. Imho you become responsible when given responsibility. (30 yrs tchg)

@naomicfisher Superb analysis Naomi! - and before I am accused of never having worked at 'the front line' (why are your critics so drawn to the language of war? Are kids the 'enemy'?) I have 25 years in secondary classrooms as head of year, department. house, 6th form, deputy head/acting head.

@AdamHighcliffe @SchoolsWeek My work for the DFEE/Crick in 12 schools showed that the involvement of students in their own learning and the life of the school was associated with better than expected GCSE results, better attendance and fewer exclusions than average for schools in similar socio-economic areas

@AdamHighcliffe @SchoolsWeek The Birbalsingh/high-control advocates claim better GCSE results. They may be right. Are they comparing like with like? They are certainly wrong to claim this is the only way to achieve 'better than expected for type of school' improved GCSE, attendance and exclusion figures.

@naomicfisher Whether you are speaking for a vulnerable minority or whether they are 'canaries in the mine' warning us of harm being done to all children subjected to 'high control' regimes don't be quiet Naomi. Compare your 'likes' to those of the sarcastic put-downs and feel heartened!

@naomicfisher Absolutely Naomi. Military planners would think twice about an operation with predicted 30% casualties yet we go on doing this to young people with pernicious and largely irrelevant to employers GCSE. Cui bono?

@MarkIraSmith @naomicfisher Ofsted reports from 2017 (RI), 2019 (still RI overall but arrival of new HT in 2018 raised management to Good), 2022 GOOD overall. Decline in NOR from 2019 (624) to 2022 (395) might have assisted improvement though also suggests loss of aspirational parents.

@MarkIraSmith @naomicfisher Ofsted reports 2017-2022 show steady improvement. 2017=RI, 2019=RI overall - but G for management (new HT 2018), 2022=Good overall. Decline in pupil numbers (624 2019 to 395 2022) may be assisting improvement seen by Ofsted may also indicate loss of more aspirational parents.

@DrRLofthouse This piece about Beacon High School is heart warming. Improving results through inclusion rather than exclusion. Emphasis on listening, caring, understanding. Less encouraging is that this has become 'alternative' in today's prevailing culture of zero tolerance and punishment.
