Just popping another reminder that Veil by Kotteri is coming soon in English, from
@mangasplaining
and
@UdonEnt
. I'll post a pre-order link as soon as we have the release dates finalized. This full-color manga will be GORGEOUS, i promise!
Hajime no Ippo, Kamui Den and Ashita no Joe were on my "I wish" manga in English licensing list for so many years. So was Fist of the North Star, Kamen Rider, Poe Clan and Nejishiki (all now available in English). So what's left on my wish list? Let's see...
another
@mangasplaining
/
@UdonEnt
project in the works is Veil by Kotteri -- a gorgeous, full-color romance story. We're taking great care to produce an English edition that fans will love. We hope to have an update on the release date/pre-orders for this very soon.
Such amazing things are possible thanks to a robust manga market in N. America. In the last few months alone we got the Legend of Kamuy fr.
@dandq
, Hajime no Ippo on
@KMANGA_KODANSHA
AND now Ashita no Joe in English in a hardcover print edition in Dec 2024 fr.
@KodanshaManga
Tank Chair is coming out in print from
@KodanshaManga
in September 2024! An assassin is left paralyzed and catatonic, but wheelchair-bound or not, his killer instincts kick in when his sister accepts hit jobs on his behalf. Read it now on
@KMANGA_KODANSHA
A re-issue and completion of Swan, Kyoko Ariyoshi's incredible ballet manga would be amazing. Sure, the story is pure 70's melodrama, but the way she depicts dance and music is just incredible.
On my last trip to Japan, I finally bought used set of Candy Candy manga at
@mandarake
in Osaka. This was my manga gateway drug. It'll likely never, ever be published in English (because of a dispute between the artist and author) so this is the only way to get it now.
One thing I miss about going to Japan and buying used manga is that you can sometimes buy a whole set as a big wrapped up BRICK O' MANGA for one price. One day, I'll cough up the ¥¥ to buy Candy Candy.
I’m doing a little research project and would love to get some feedback from professionals working in J->E manga lettering, translation, and editing. hit me up via DM if you’re interested.
Another classic shojo manga mentioned in Manga! Manga! that I'd love to read in English is Fire! by Hideko Mizuno. Set in the world of US 1960s-70's rock music, Fire! was recently reissued in Japanese as 2 volumes. This one's my copy that I bought at a used bookstore years ago
Well, I think at least a greatest hits collection of Fujio Akatsuka's gag manga is overdue in English. There's bilingual editions of Tensai Bakabon and Osomatsu-kun, but the wildly over-the-top mayhem of his best work isn't fully appreciated overseas.
Another of my "most wanted but I thought it'd never come out in English" manga series recently got picked up by
@lastgaspbooks
- Ultra Heaven by Keiichi Koike is the ONLY sci-fi manga about taking acid you'll ever need. I promise, this is worth the wait.
Still having no damn luck getting my old
@debaoki
Twitter account back.
I'm going to keep filling out those Medallia customer satisfaction surveys that
@Support
sends me after not doing a damn thing to help. I hope my all "zero/i hate you" answers tank their average NPS score
can i just say that it's kind of a pain to try to recreate a twitter account after being locked out of one that you spent 15+ years tweeting from, just because of a stupid 2-factor authentication issue that
@Support
seems unwilling or unable to fix?
Can I just say that
@KodanshaManga
's new cover for the print omnibus edition of The Fable by Katsuhisa Minami is a WAAAY better representation of how funny this story about a hitman who has to take a year off is, compared to the original JP covers?
I would love to read classic baseball manga Kyojin no Hoshi (Star of the Giants) by Ikki Kajiwara (author of Ashita no Joe) and Noboru Kawasaki -- This scene parodying the teen protagonist's intense training in "Even a Monkey Can Draw Manga" is about all we have in English.
I flew to Akita Prefecture to see the exhibit of Tsurukichi Sanpei (Fisherman Sanpei) manga at the Yokote Masuda
@m_mangamuseum
last year and was blown away by Takao Yaguchi’s original art. Unfortunately, an english edition is pretty unlikely. :-/
Lovely night at the Asian Comics exhibit at
@BowersMuseum
tonight - an amazing collection of original, replica and historic manga/manhua/manhwa from Japan, Korea, China, India, and beyond
#manga
I have SO MANY titles on my
@mangasplaining
"let's license and publish this manga" list. 😅
So far, only Okinawa by Susumu Higa is out in print from
@fantagraphics
and now Search & Destroy by Atsushi Kaneko is up for pre-order.
I'm a manga history nerd, but I always buy the 'classic' manga that gets published in English when they come out. They don't sell much as Chainsaw Man, but it's important that overseas fans get access to stories that influenced their favorite manga creators.
I've had good luck when I've posted a call for freelancer talent here, so here goes: Anyone up to help manage / create content for a YouTube channel? Content is mostly comics and entertainment news. Paid gig. DM me if you are interested or know someone.
OH HELLO. Now you can read this
@mangasplaining
fave in print again! And yes, Real vol. 13 (the wrestling match story we focused on in our David-hosted episode) is ESPECIALLY good.
🚨 REPRINT ALERT 🚨
It appears that new volumes of Real by Takehiko Inoue are set to restock and hit shelves in April. Volumes 4-14 listed. Carrying a new price tag of $16.99 USD (22.90 CAD) and a spine change similar to volume 15.
One more for the "I wish" manga list -- Fantasy World Jun by Shotaro Ishinomori. This is mostly wordless, experimental comics by the creator of Kamen Rider, so it almost needs no translation at all. It's his 'art house'/experimental indie comix and they're gorgeous.
Coming soon in Season 5 of
@mangasplaining
- Chip
@zdarsky
hosts a very special episode of "Comicsplaining" -- where I'm the n00b who reads something I haven't read in a looong while, "Daredevil: Born Again" by Frank Miller and David Mazzucccheli.
New addition to the “i am buying way too many manga reference books for my
@ccacomics
class” - this book on how to draw movement and emotions by Toshi, from Kadokawa that i picked up from
@KinokuniyaUSA
’s 20% off members days sale
@debaoki
I've been locked out of my
@debaoki
Twitter account since OCTOBER 2023 - so it's been 4? 5? months and numerous emails that say "we see this is related to another request you've made" then NOTHING, no follow-up for weeks. I haven't counted how many attempts I've made to fix this.
I’m doing a little research project and would love to get some feedback from professionals working in J->E manga lettering, translation, and editing. hit me up via DM if you’re interested.
Also in the works w/
@udonent
(but delayed for various reasons) is "No Roses Without Thorns: An Assistant’s Dispatches from the Front Line of 1970s Shōjo Manga" by Nami Saso, translated by Rachel Thorn and lettering by Kyla Aiko. Hope to share release dates update soon.
Santa is ripppped in “Sanda,” the latest manga series by Beastars creator Paru Itagaki. It reminds me of the ikemen colonel sanders game that came out a few years ago…
Santa Claus Mystery Manga "Sanda" by "Beastars" creator Paru Itagaki is starting the final fight in Weekly Shounen Champion.
Set in a near-future Japan with heavily declined birth rates, a middle-school student is attacked by a classmate & learns about his lineage with Santa
Okay, i give up. I had to start a new Twitter account to try to untangle the problem with my "locked-out-for-4-months"
@debaoki
account. Let's see if this works.
Will try again this week to try to get Tw**ter Support to try to help me regain access / consolidate my accounts. In the meantime, i'm slowly adding accounts I used to follow because if I add too many at once, apparently I'll get flagged. >_>
Ok, regained access to my
@DebAoki_2
twitter account. I think it got flagged because I used the same icon as my
@debaoki
account. Still working on getting access back to THAT one, but in the meantime, a tiny bit of progress.
Big thanks to translator Ben Applegate and lettering master Phil Christie for their awesome work on the

edition of Search and Destroy by
@kaneko_atsushi_
! Read chapter 0-1 here:
When only the most recent hot manga series from Japan get published in English, we miss out on a lot of important context, and appreciation for manga's roots. It's kind of like loving Led Zeppelin and never hearing the blues musicians that inspired many of their songs.
Picked up
@gomanga
’s edition of Lupin III’s Greatest Heists books (it was marked down at
@PegasusBooks
) and now finally have context for this infamous scene featured in Fred Schodt’s “Manga! Manga!” book
@salinsley
The “that’s not shojo/shonen manga” thing is why i opt for “best new manga for kids/teens” and “best new manga for grown-ups” for my sdcc panels. >_>
Kick off your week with a new episode of
@mangasplaining
- David's latest pick is Heavenly Delusion by Masakazu Ishiguro, a fascinating sci-fi story fr.
@denpa_books
Oh hello! The latest
@mangasplaining
episode and show notes are up now? Go listen and check out our chat about The Yakuza's Bias by

ICYMI - here's my write-up of
@MantaComics
Manta Novels for
@comicsbeat
. 11 series are spotlighted + thots on how webnovels from S. Korea offer binge-able romantasy reads that give fans access to what happens beyond the latest chapter of their fave webtoons
We recently recorded a
@mangasplaining
episode on Manga! Manga!, Fred Schodt's 1983 book that opened the world's eyes to the world of Japanese comics. While several of the manga series spotlighted in that book are now available in English, many are still not.
It's a shame that the webtoon that this movie is based on isn't available to read in English... but go read this review of Concrete Utopia on

by Derrick Crow
@KazekunForever
- it sounds great.

At every new display at the
@BowersMuseum
Asian Comics exhibit would be another “omg, whaaat!” example from a top manga artist - Maruo Suehiro, Ayano Yamane, Fujio F Fujiko and so much more
I finished Sensei’s Pious Lie Vol 1 last night and
@BEANQUeenie_
was right. It is very difficult to digest but it might just have a genuinely good story underneath all that violence. The power struggle between victim and aggressor is portrayed so well. Read with caution.
Licensing and publishing manga in English takes time -- more than you expect! We here at team
@mangasplaining
are so proud to work with so many amazing translators, book designers, letterers, and publishers. We hope that you like what you've seen from us so far.
welp, Saturday will be the first session of my
@ccacomics
class on manga for the MFA in Comics program. Find out more about what CCA has to offer: or check out their BFA in Comics program too:
wow - another anime adaptation of a webtoon coming soon. "Viral Hit" is on
@webtoonofficial
, and is about a guy who learns how to fight thanks to lessons from a guy on YouTube wearing a chicken mask. It's worth a read!
Mind you, the
@BowersMuseum
Asian Comics exhibit is not just a “manga” from Japan — there’s comics from India, Singapore, Mongolia, Korea, Hong Kong and more!
slowly trying to get this alt account to the point where it's a useful source of information again -- but always worried that if i follow too many accounts too quickly i'll get locked out of this account again. (shakes fist at sky)
"Neko Atsume 2," is scheduled to be released in the summer of 2024 on iOS and Android. We have prepared elements to further enhance the charm of Neko Atsume, so please look forward to it.

The Asia Comics exhibit is up at
@BowersMuseum
through September, so if you live in SoCal or are coming to LA for Anime Expo, set aside time to see this exhibit curated by Paul Gravett & presented by the team at
@BarbicanCentre
— it’s worth the trip!
Maybe it's just me, but i felt like this when the latest chapter of Dogs Run by Satoru Noda (Golden Kamuy) posted on
@shonenjump
FINALLY got them on the ice after several chapters of them carrying around some p*nis shaped logs.
Delighted to see so many people come out for the first
@prideinpanels
comics show at
@SFPublicLibrary
on Sunday! Big ups to the
@ccacomics
faculty and students who exhibited and gave talks too
We also have several
@mangasplaining
titles in the works with
@UdonEnt
, including GigaTown: A Guide to Manga Symbols by Fumiyo Kouno (In This Corner of the World), translated by Ko Ransom. We hope to have the release date finalized & pre-order links up soon.
@debaoki
okay, it looks like this is a bug (no surprises there) -- the accounts i've followed so far are still there. but i have to not add a lot at at time since THAT gets this account flagged too. Srsly. >_>
@jimheps
@lastgaspbooks
It's not yet posted for pre-orders on Last Gasp's website, but their initial press release said "2024" -- so maybe toward the end of the year, I'd imagine.
I don't know which school of PR says it's OK to send pitches that are completely irrelevant to the writer that you're sending it to, sending the same pitch several times, and then NAGGING the recipient to REPLY to you. I'm looking at YOU, flack with the "Worldle trends" story.
@debaoki
I do get that these measures are to prevent bot accounts from spamming, etc. but added to the lack of responsiveness from
@Support
, it makes me flinchy at the possibility of getting locked out of this account too.
@_nevrose_
@Support
I've been locked out since OCTOBER 2023, and have just been in an endless loop of "oh, it looks like this is related to something you've contacted us before" with
@Support
. NO SH*T. now DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. You just need to reset my 2FA settings. That's it!
