Another awesome teaching moment! Notice straight wrist at release, arm/hand turned to side, like “karate” chop. No twist, no snap, just throw fast in that hand/arm position. As always, thank you

One of my favorite knee lift stories… as Nolan Ryan was aging,
@tomhouse
tried tinkering with a lower knee lift. Ryan’s response… “Tom, I throw harder when I lift my knee higher, go put that in your damn computer!” The key to making a high knee lift create more velo is moving
Coaches/Parents, if your yelling “don’t lose this guy” when your pitcher gets behind in the count, you just programmed his subconscious for failure. Be positive or be silent, they don’t need our help to know it’s bad to give BB.
@NPA_Pitching
@tomhouse
Time for my annual PSA on summer ball.. if all you do is play games this summer, and don’t take the time to condition and build skills, you will most likely be the same player at the end of the summer. In fact, you may be “exposed” instead of “showcased”.
@NPA_Pitching
It’s very powerful to be able to fix yourself by the pitch instead of by the batter or worse. Miss high/low? Keep your glove in front of center mass longer. Miss glove side, hold a good posture longer into footstrike. Posture changes effect head position and left/right location.
Wow, not a shocker to see this for him, that’s just off the charts torque! His belt buckle is nearly on the catcher, but his back shoulder has not started forward, just phenomenal!
Today I’m angry. Two separate athletes called me today saying another org told them “you can’t teach command, it’s a feel thing”. So they are saying we don’t know how to fix you, but we will take your money anyway. Let me be clear, YOU CAN AND WE DO TEACH COMMAND!
@NPA_Pitching
WARNING! Filthy material included in this video. No batters were hurt in the making of this video, but maybe a little embarrassed🤣‼️ Possible contender for sword of the year
@PitchingNinja

You should be 6-7 of your own feet in stride distance, in 1 sec. But…reaching out with your front foot to go farther, does not help. Taking longer to go farther, does not help. Go faster and farther for more force.
Also, keep your “Fire Childress” tweets to yourself. Support the boys on a great season and appreciate all of the individuals who go to great lengths to support and promote this program.
Thanks & Gig ‘em.
One of the most common biomechanical flaws is starting the upper body throwing process before footstrike. This happens a lot from the poor instruction of “pull down”, or “yank your glove”. Do yourself a favor… video one of your pitches, then video one swinging a bat, you will
WHY WOULD A PITCHER SWING A BAT OFF THE MOUND?
When swinging a bat, the body mechanics are the same as throwing a pitch.
The weight of the bat delays the shoulders.

You win or you learn.
There are no failures, only lessons. When you fall you need to pick yourself up with greater enthusiasm than you went down. Now we look back on an incredible season, learn our lessons, and get up... because even greater things are coming.
#KeepGoing
This the most efficient way to do your long toss! We recommend throwing ALL your pitches to target, at 120ft. Why? In order to hit your target at that distance, your mvmnts have to be efficient. Now you can practice creating max force with max efficiency.
@NPA_Pitching
I’m a pitching coach, but when I see this image and many other great hitters swinging on an up plane, I’m grateful when I hear the hitting coach say “you need to hit down through the ball!”😁
@NPA_Pitching
After doing our arm care/upper body flex routine with a new athlete today, comment after the first throw was priceless. He said, “whoa, the first throw has never felt that good”. If your first throw does not feel good, you did not prep right!
@tomhousesports
@NPA_Pitching
Love CFM’s curve, mostly because he proves release height and so called “being on top” has nothing to do with having a good curve/slider. A couple HOFr’s look very similar!
@NPA_Pitching
For those that guessed Chapman, correct! Notice how he has forward movement while lifting, not sitting on rubber. 7ft stride, 2ft drag line. The drag line is like a rudder on a boat. Unwinding torque has to be directed. Use your rudder to direct energy correctly!
One of my athletes today… “Coach, want to hear something funny? My team coach told me to stay on the rubber longer and stop dragging my toe”. So I was inspired to create a new game called “Guess that Draaaagline!” (use game show host voice)😁
@NPA_Pitching
You should think of your arm as a bank account. If you are releasing something, it’s money coming out. If you are holding on to something (bands, dumbbells, balls, towel), it’s money coming in. Don’t go bankrupt, hold more than release!
@NPA_Pitching
@tomhouse
At best I see my athletes once per week. That session is really a confirmation of the work they’ve done or not done, between our visits. If you want to continue to develop and learn new skills, the work done without your trainer (off the field) is imperative!
@NPA_Pitching
One of our guys showed up today for his weekly session. 6inn, 85 pitches the day before. Why did he still come in? Because we can calculate the ft. lbs taken out of the arm, and show him exactly what to do to put in back in. Does your current program do that?
@NPA_Pitching
Awesome sequence! Notice how well he goes back to linear mvmt after max external rotation of shoulder. Moves to glove, chest stays squared up till release. Too many stay rotational, over rotating into release. Pro tip…dragline.

I’m willing to bet he holds the record on torque (hip/shoulder separation) as well! Congrats to this young man, I’m sure a lot of work went into his success.
Maybe you should ask a few questions before judging the drill? This towel drill is not mechanical (we have a separate one for that). It’s one piece of our entire arm care and recovery training block. It’s intention is to get the athlete to an anaerobic state for max blood
This is not how you’re supposed to do the towel drill folks! My buddy
@KMcGovernPT
will teach you if you want to learn proper mechanics and the correct way to do drills.

Do a “floor” press instead of “bench” press! Why? When your elbows get behind your shoulders you’re at risk for rotator cuff impingements. Also use dumbbells, independent weight, not a straight bar. After pressing up, bring the weight down as slowly as possible, work the

Most kids will say “I’m fine” when asked if they are ok. Why? They do not want to disappoint us. It’s our jobs as parents and coaches to know the signs and make the call for them. Watch the body language, it never lies.
@NPA_Pitching
There’s zero reason to pitch when your arm is hurting. Pitching through pain is not heroic.
Pitchers, parents and coach, always set the ground rules to speak up early and often when experiencing pain.
The summer travel ball schedule is about to end. If you feel you are the same player now as the beginning of the summer, don’t make the same mistake in the fall! Get off the field… competing is skill application, training is skill building!

Every time we work with a 6’5”+ pitcher, I realize why we may never see another Randy Johnson in the league. No nice way of saying this, but many team coaches are teaching the opposite of what made Randy so great(I’m not referring to velo). Here’s the mistakes they make:

@NPA_Pitching
I’m all about helping the next generation of athletes. Hating on one of the best warmups you can do before throwing is one of the worst things you could put on a broadcast. Encourage this warmup.
I challenge you to do this warmup for 10 minutes, no breaks
@SteveYoungQB

The front side may be the most misinformed teach. Why? If the human eye were a camera it would process about 32fps, but the critical moments require 200+fps to catch. With good intentions, coaches misinform pitchers on the body/glove relationship. The best move to the glove!
Outstanding advice from
@smoltz_john
on front side and head position!
@tomhousesports
has been teaching this for decades, and still do everyday. If you disagree with this you’re just choosing a side, and not the TRUTH!
Amazingly I find kids that understand this better than some parents. When your kid fails, they already feel bad about it, they don’t need our help to feel worse. Don’t ask “why”, but “what”, as in what can I do to help? That takes them from the past to moving on to the future.
Greg Maddux on Failure.
"You fail. And you don't want to fail that way again. There's nothing wrong with failing...unless you keep doing it the same way."
If you've ever questioned whether a pitcher should tilt to the glove side to gain a higher release...I think this video will give you a definitive answer.
@tomhousesports
Lots to admire here. Huge leap/stride, 7 or more of his feet, tracks well to glove, eyes level, back toe down. Basically he’s 1ft closer to home than avg MLB pitcher!
To create max force, from max acceleration, your deceleration needs to be equal in strength and speed. There’s not an easier way to do this besides sprinting backwards. Weight training alone will not do it, it takes something to establish nerve pathway balance as well. In
Great info here! Fastball ranking is more than max velo, it’s velo + movement. So a flat 95, may rank lower than a moving 90. Moral of the story, Velo may open the door, but velo+movement means you get to stay. Learn to pitch, not just throw!
@NPA_Pitching
@tomhousesports
Fastball velocity can be overrated. Consider: Per Statcast, only 6 pitchers in
@MLB
this year are throwing a fastball with greater effectiveness than
@SFGiants
reliever Tyler Rogers. And last night, Rogers did not throw a fastball harder than 84 mph.
@MLBNetwork
@MLBStats

season starting is awesome, but the real excitement for me is all sub AAA minor leaguers start their spring training. Remember these guys did not have a season last year. LFG!!!!!!
@NPA_Pitching
@tomhousesports
People who act like sidearm is the plague…
It’s just a slight change in shoulder tilt. That’s it. Don’t hate on athletes for the way they naturally throw.
Great teaching moment here... hand position creates the pitch. 1/4 turn=slider, full chop=curveball. Firm/straight wrist on both. Also for those that keep yelling “get on top”, time to stop, it never happens!
@NPA_Pitching
@tomhousesports
Done correctly, pitching from the stretch creates the same amount of force into foot strike, as the full wind up, with easier duplication of proper mechanics. Done correctly means getting your backside going forward immediately, we call that building an energy angle.
Every parent & coach needs to hear this: They should pitch from the stretch. Next opportunity for in-person Q & A with Tom House, Dean Doxakis, Robert Ambrose & certified NPA staff is Colorado in July
@tomhouse
@DeanDoxakisNPA
It’s possible I’m just a little passionate about that subject!😁
But it’s not an opinion, but 30+ years of research. If someone attempts to change your arm path, first ask them if they can explain the kinematic sequence and how the sequence relates to your arm. They will
Amazing how NFL QB’s are not afraid to demonstrate the Tom House Sports methods, but elite MLB pitchers keep it private. Why? Baseball is so unforgiving to change. Yes, baseball has advanced in data collection, but not nearly as fast in health+performance training.
Tom could be one of those "back in my day" guys who acts like he knows it all (with a resume of having coached Nolan Ryan, Randy Johnson, Drew Brees & Tom Brady).
Instead, he's one of the nicest dudes on Pitching Twitter, constantly building kids up & learning. 🍻
This is my attic. Many others with grown kids have similar unwanted piles of trophies that made no difference to their future success. The message…build good positive memories when you compete, those are kept forever, not the wins and the hardware.
@NPA_Pitching
Maybe the problem is not the people that are selling it, but the people that are buying it. We need more leaders in our industry, specifically college coaches, to speak up and help educate parents.
We don’t need 9U and 11U prospect watch lists. We need better spaces for kids to enjoy the fun of their sport. We don’t need to sell out the sandlot pretending any of these kids are prospects yet.
Spring and summer baseball are great, but fall ball is not necessary. Play other sports, work on your functional strength, deep train, build skills, play catch, throw a football, etc. This is just not about arm care, but the mind needs that break from competition as well.
Maybe one of your greatest tweets of all time! Energy angle is the degrees measured from back foot to front hip, at max knee lift. Elite is 30 degrees, Sandy looks like 45 deg! Great pitchers lead with the front hip into knee lift, not after.
@NPA_Pitching
In 1985, he threw 24 complete games🤯‼️Held the ball one way, 4 seam, but threw many pitches, simply just changed his hand position. If you struggle with your curve, trying holding a four seam very tight, and just supinate hand position (karate “chop”).
@NPA_Pitching
Ask yourself this...when you post images of talented athletes you work with, are you doing that for them or your own self interest? One of the reasons we do not constantly post images or names of our athletes is because then it becomes more about “us” and not all about “them”.
Just because an athlete chooses to do your program doesn’t mean they’re “your” athlete. If an athlete gives you credit, that’s great.
Athletes should pick and choose from a variety of programs, ideas and coaches. What works best for them is their own program.
Love this, but not surprising at all! The majority of ball velo comes from torque (hip/shoulder separation). Every rotational athlete should include swinging and throwing from knees to train max torque.
@NPA_Pitching
Imagine trying to hit a ball with your front foot off the ground? Well its exactly the same as a pitcher starting to throw before footstrike. This is the problem with teaching pitchers to pull their gloves, they almost always start the upper body to early.
@NPA_Pitching
Tom has accomplished more in a lifetime than many of us could ever dream of, but still everyday he goes out and pours his heart and soul into any and every athlete that shows up, pee-wees to pros!
We just don’t build great athletes, we build great people!
I can’t tell you how much it means to me,
@tomhouse
, and
@NPA_Pitching
, that we can make a difference in young athletes. Come see us at the next one! (We also helped a “kid” realize he’s a triple digit dude😉!)
The leap makes McClanahan one of my absolute favorite pitchers to watch. You can’t teach a leap like this.
When a pitcher naturally leaps, never let any coach try to get rid of their leap!
Favorite line from Nolan… “Control the body to control the arm”. Nolan wanted to stay behind his pitches longer. Today, we call that tracking.
@NPA_Pitching
My Interview with Nolan Ryan, Tom House & Bradley Jackson ("Facing Nolan" Director).
"I have no fascination with Snow Monkeys." -Nolan Ryan 😂
[You have to see the 'Facing Nolan' documentary, it's great!]
Watch the FULL interview AND Subscribe:
Nolan was a great example of building the “energy angle”. That’s the angle from the rubber to the front hip, at the top of the knee lift. It should be 25-30 degrees, for max force and consistent timing to foot strike.
Here’s also what he definitely was NOT doing:
🚫Staying over
Watch Nolan Ryan’s pelvis as he lifts his stride leg.
Like most elite pitchers, his pelvis has moved closer to the plate by maximum leg lift.
If not, they have a characteristic we call Hanging Back.
Not only key for generating velo, but also deception.
At the end of each training session we ask every athlete “what did you learn today”?They usually start with “ I need to not…”., and as soon as I hear the word “not”, I stop them. Don’t tell me what you’re not going to do, tell me what you need to do. Knowing that you need to
No mystery here on why he is so dominant. His “tunnel” vs “spread” is incredible! Your mechanics must be the same for all your pitches, mostly timing to footstrike. Many slow down for offspeeds without realizing it. Go fast on all pitches!
@NPA_Pitching
@tomhousesports
Kids will inevitably move as efficiently as their bodies are capable of till someone patterns them incorrectly. This is why it’s better to get no instruction than bad instruction to young pitchers.

Athletes, don’t be afraid to speak up if you don’t understand what you’re being asked to accomplish. And if your coach has a problem with that, you have the wrong coach.
@NPA_Pitching

To be clear, it’s 1.3 sec or less to release, and </= .40 sec to home. And yes, we have 1000’s of motion captures of pitchers releasing in under 1.3. Here’s the timing of the pitcher I showed originally (timer at bottom). I’m hoping that this demonstration is perceived as
@DeanDoxakisNPA
Do you have video of guys being 1.3 to the plate with a full lift like that? I'd love to see how fast they have to move in their motion to do that.
I threw for 20 years and stopped when my career ended due to an inoperable lesion in my shoulder. I’ve been throwing for a week as a fun part of my workout routine and it’s made me so happy.
Never denying myself that fun and play again!
Two HOF pitchers: different body types, knee lifts, and force creation, but notice timing to footstrike exactly the same! Try doing shuffle steps down the mound to teach quick feet/timing. All our drills are available at
We can help with some information as to why towel drill is a very beneficial drill, but may require a thread.
Here’s a video of
@tomhouse
and myself explaining the benefits (specifically addressing your concerns around 5:00 min mark).
No drill has had a more pronounced negative effect on a population of athletes than the towel drill on baseball pitchers. I’ve never seen another drill that’s so bad and yet so ubiquitous.
This is incredible, so many good things in his delivery! But also deceiving mechanically in full speed. Huge knee lift, leap, drag line, eyes level, stable front side into release! How many only see a “flying” front side? Look again…
If anyone says stride length/timing doesn’t matter, they are arguing with the laws of physics. With timing to footstrike constant, 200lb pitcher with 5ft stride=1000ft lbs, 200lb pitcher with 6ft stride=1200ft lbs. Go fast, go far!
@NPA_Pitching
Not only is the total pitch count an issue, every pitch past 30 in a single inning has the stress level of 3 pitches. If considering acute stress levels, this pitcher probably threw the stress level equivalence of 140 pitches.
@NPA_Pitching
@tomhousesports
Throwing 82 pitches (3 innings) in a Preseason tournament ... is not a good idea for pitchers that’s been out of live games for 3 months. BE CAREFUL... 🤦🏽♂️
This is a great example of what we call a “step behind” but others call “pull down”. The term“pull down” gives perception you should pull glove and body down to create energy. But notice how stable Brandon’s glove is into release and level eyes! Efficient energy, less stress!
Many just see the glamorous side of college athletics. Yes, they are very fortunate. But the daily grind of being a full time student, daily workouts, daily practice, etc is like working multiple full time jobs. If they can survive that, they have the right to protect the reward.
College kids being called “soft” for protecting their health while about to make millions is the worst part of college athletics and “team first” culture.
Root for kids making money. You’re really on the side of the bowl games and athletic programs?
My notes from
@ClaytonKersh22
tonight..
▪️Many throw hard, the best mentally prepared make it.
▪️Didn’t play travel ball to age 13
▪️Didn’t have his first pitching lesson till a Jr in high school
▪️Pattern your throwing/awareness without throwing/releasing.
