Whether you agree with the CIAC’s decision or not, the players in particular and coaches should not have had to go on this emotional rollercoaster ride to have their hopes dashed three times over the past month. I feel badly for them today.

Wilton has a female on the freshman team. She’s not a kicker. No one has gotten open today against the Warriors’ new middle linebacker, Emma Van Heist.

Heartbroken to learn that Charlie Capalbo passed today. He fought to the end, and brought the state hockey community and many others together in the process. My thoughts are with the Capalbo family. Charlie will live on through us all because of the spirit he shared. RIP.
Twenty four hours later and state football players are not going quietly into the night. This tweet from the reigning Gatorade Player of the Year is one of many being posted now by players throughout Connecticut.

Fifteen FCIAC football coaches signed a letter that was sent yesterday to Gov. Ned Lamont, the Department of Public Health and the CIAC board, advocating playing a fall season, with a backup plan to move the sport to the spring. Here is the letter.

One general observation this past year: parents may soon get to prove they know more than the coaches they run out because they have scared off good candidates at once-desirable jobs because coaches don’t want to deal with them. Coaches deserve less abuse, more appreciation.
Unfortunately you can’t follow the ball: a Yankees scout estimated this home run by Staples’ Chad Knight against Norwalk went 474 feet. He’s batting .636.

Newtown’s Riley Ward catches the winning 36-yard touchdown pass on the final play for a 13-7 win over Darien in the Class LL final. On a date of sadness in Newtown, the football team delivers some joy. Love high school sports. (Photo by

The Wilton High School football family extends it’s deepest sympathy and ongoing support to the DiRocco family during this incredibly difficult time. We love you George. Once a Warrior always a Warrior.
What an incredible display of leadership and unity put forth by CIAC football players & captains. We're all brothers off the field. "1 MORE PLAY". So proud of all these boys! Be relentless in your fight for football. Finish what you started.

Norwalk’s Cam Edwards will be announcing his college decision on Wednesday. The choice is down to UConn, Rhode Island and Central Connecticut. He’s making a visit to Storrs today.

Just got off the phone with someone actively involved in trying to organize a private football league for FCIAC teams & players. The plan is to make it inclusive for kids from all socio-economic backgrounds. There would be scholarships available for those that need them.

From the CIAC: "Following an online meeting with nearly 70 school, athletic and governmental leaders CIAC reached a consensus that canceling the entirety of the spring sports season is premature at this time.”

A tip of the hat to everyone associated with FCIAC sports for putting together about the best winter season possible, with minimal setbacks, and giving the kids a memorable experience. It was even smoother than I bet most hoped. Off for a week to regroup for the spring season.
Due to the loss of The Ruden Report’s biggest fan, it is with regret that the site will not be updated for several days. I look forward to being back out in the field real soon.
Please don’t make me spend another week writing about the status of fall sports.

According to source, Board of Control felt football committee wanted to push back season because it ensured best chance to have a complete season and not for current health reasons. All other sports wanted to play. BOC didn’t feel it was right to push back just one sport.

It is time to change the state boys lacrosse tournament and make it similar to hockey. Wilton is second in the state poll and playing tomorrow for the FCIAC championship — and is seeded fourth in Class M. Does that make sense to anyone?

Condolences, thoughts and prayers to Trumbull boys basketball coach Buddy Bray on the passing of his father last night. Fortunately Buddy got to see him after the win over St. Joseph. Buddy is one of the FCIAC’s many class acts.

Some news: After 10 years & 10 months as a solo act, yesterday I sold The Ruden Report to Connoisseur Media, which owns 13 radio stations, marketing & audio/video companies. I am staying as director of operations, doing the same job. Readers will get more of what they like best.
Defensive play of the year? This one is ESPN Top-10 worthy. Fairfield Warde centerfielder Declan O’Hara dives through the fence to rob Staples’ David Gervasio of a three-run homer.

And that's a wrap on the 2021 FCIAC football and fall sports season. This was the best football season I can recall, with more good teams and great games than ever before. Thanks to all the athletes and coaches for teeing it up with great material for so many stories.

Congratulations to New Canaan quarterback Drew Pyne (center), who was selected last week as one of the top 100 high school players in the country to take part in the Under Armour All-America game next winter.

Heartbreaking news: popular Trumbull boys soccer coach Sebe Gangemi passed away this morning after a battle with leukemia. A great coach, a great person, a great role model. My thoughts are with the Gangemi family.

Seven years to the day after tragedy struck Newtown, the high school's football team won their first state championship since 1992 on a last-second play.

caught up with the team on what it means to the small Connecticut town.
The CIAC and DPH met this morning. The CIAC presented to the DPH mitigating factors to make football safe to play. Each side brought its own scientists. The DPH promised to review and give a reply as soon as possible. So the wait goes on.
