@AbbeyHeffer Hi Abbey! Just wondering, have you done anything educational on the Bill of Rights Bill in the UK? It's an issue affecting human rights in the UK but there is not much public conversation on it as far as I can tell - perhaps bc some of the Bill's content is quite techy/obscure

Now up on @openDemocracy : @nataliesedacca and @hyjpang_ and I examine the damage the Bill of Rights Bill could do to workers' rights *Just as I was writing this, news broke that the Bill has been shelved for 12 Sep Second Reading and may well be amended*

With the new government, the attacks on the Human Rights Act look set to continue and even intensify. In this piece for @openDemocracy , @DaniellaLock , @hyjpang_ and I argue that the #RightsRemovalBill is also part of a broader threat to workers' rights

Judging by the manner the bill of rights bill was introduced, Raab not only dislikes robust protections for human rights but has no respect for Parliament. Imagine he will railroad the bill of rights bill to rush it through before the next tory implosion

Another abuse of the democratic process by the UK government. They're coming thick and fast atm..This time, to make a significant change to elections law in the UK, and double election spending by parties. 1/

The government has just pushed through a new regulation on election spending. At a single stroke it almost doubles the permitted spending in UK elections - with no debate, scrutiny or vote in Parliament.

UK democracy depends on elected reps holding the gov to account, including via Parliamentary scrutiny of legislation. Yet the UK gov "has got increasingly used to legislating at speed, limiting time available to the Commons to examine bills in detail." Great piece @aliceolilly

What is happening to parliamentary scrutiny (especially of legislation)? This is an effort to try and tease out a lot of different issues and answer that question. Thanks to @aljwhite for the chance to write this (and thanks to the people who spoke to me)

The Convention has no application in this context. The sole reference to asylum and refugees in the 2019 Conservative manifesto was the commitment to “continue to grant asylum and support to refugees fleeing persecution”.

The UK Gov is more concerned with its own power than actual people. It's passed heaps of legislation, shadow-boxing with refugees and protestors, exponentially expanding its powers. This has been a distraction while people struggle to put food with basic nutrition on the table.
