The first assignment I gave my students this term was to critique a ChatGPT paper, so that they can see that it produces unreadable garbage.

I suspect that it’s true of every field. The pre-WW2 model in which a few research universities had the very best people, and most institutions saw their mission as teaching, not research, was more efficient and more effective.

One more thing: I’ve never heard any of those viral claims from the original study. Answering would be basically random. So, I don’t trust the results at all.

I’ve been a professor for 44 years, and still love what I do. Yes, there’s too much grading, administrative stuff, etc., and too little recognition. But the freedom to think about what interests me, surrounded by brilliant colleagues and students, is amazing.

Equity, “systemic racism, housing affordability, small business interests, economic opportunity, education and health”—what about getting people where they want to go?
@AmyClukey
I tell my students that if I even suspect that their paper is AI generated, I won’t grade it—I kick it back and tell them I’ll grade something they’ve actually written. I also, at the start of the term, give them an AI generated paper and have them critique it.

The real question is, why have costs soared far above the rate of inflation? Elite private colleges in the mid 1970s were $3K a year for tuition, room, and board—equivalent to less than $20K today.

Bob was an amazing teacher. Legendary. Sadly, he wouldn’t share any of his techniques with younger faculty who were eager to learn from him. 😟

I’ve been commuting on the bus for more than a decade. It’s terrific. Cap Metro is an under appreciated strength of Austin.

John Locke defined it as enough force to make it a bad bargain for the offender, and to terrify others from doing the like. But that’s after hostilities end. Before, the attacker has created a state of war between you; kill him if you can.

I took a course with Charles Parsons, and saw him several times afterward. And Bob Kane was my colleague for many years. They’ll all be missed.
