Please checkout our new preprint! Beta diversity can be driven by both random sampling processes and non-random ecological processes. In our manuscript, we illustrate how to estimate the non-random component of beta-diversity using simulated and empirical data.

I guess the key issue is that the CI's in that fig 6 are for the means and not for the difference in the means: When converting from statistical significance to biological significance it should make us pause when CI's overlap - don't you think?
